Such a strange and sad case. I'm glad their daughter came out alright despite losing both of her parents at a young age. She dodged another bullet by leaving Germany in 1925.
Kina Kina, Hi I Agree with you 100 %. With hardly anytime to spare. Hitler and Himmler already were brewing up trouble by 1921 Germany I read. Could not agree more !
That is a hard one to call if he was guilty or not guilty as for that one person saying he was at the railway station but was that witness payed off to say that ? . Really good case that was .
Problem is, do you know how unreliable witness testimony is? There were many witnesses but only one claimed to see him at the railway, very easy to be mistaken. Plus, I don't get why people don't take his MO into consideration, the fact he admitted to luring people out of their homes under false pretenses (the mom, for one). Then she gets a call luring her out of the home once again, and the maid said it sounded like him? IMO all they have to prove is he bought the disguise prior to the murder, if so, case closed.
Questions! WHY did Lena commit suicide? Where did THAT come from?? Also, why were their kids adopted out? Didn’t we say that Josephina and her late husband had SEVEN kids? What happened to the other 5?!!! How do we know that Carl purchase the coat, beard and wig? Receipts?(I don’t trust eye witnesses, at.all.) If there ARE receipts, then he did it. Because There is no reason that a married father would need to buy a wig and then travel last minute to Germany where his MIL lived, and then returned the day after her murder. None. Plus WHAT business would he even have in Germany??? He was a lawyer in the States, he had no business in Germany. He was only IN Europe because of a vacation. What was the motive? If money was an issue, why would he travel across the Atlantic on vacation to France with his wife and daughter?? How did the maid know what Carl’s voice sound like over the phone/telegraph?
There's more proof he did than didn't wth? It was his MO to lure people out of their homes, under false pretenses...he admitted doing it twice before, once to the mom. Then the mom gets a message that lured her out of her home, one where the maid said they guy sounded like Carl, come on. Even his wife began to realize he was likely the murderer (ok, that shouldn't matter, but still, it speaks to his character). Who else had a motive? You're not blaming the daughter, are you? There's much less evidence pointing to her. Is there's proof he bought a disguise prior to the murder? If so, case closed imo. I can perhaps see you saying, I can't establish his guilt as there isn't enough evidence, but to say you think he's innocent blows my mind.

@@susanivy3619 I’m about to say… very few excuses for purchasing a wig and fake mustache especially back then unless he was about to be in a production! I think he did it honestly. Who were their other enemies?

The possibilities are endless in cases like these. I don’t think the grandson is going to get the definitive answers he seeks.
Well if your daughter said she loved a man so much that she would kill herself if she couldn’t be with him and then she got shot in what seemed to be some sort of suicide attempt or pact endorsing the relationship might seem like the best option. Given Lena’s later suicide it may indeed have been the best option. Also Lena was fairly old be unmarried at that time and by running off with Carl created a scandal that would have made it next to impossible for her to be married to a “better match”. Keep in mind this was at a time when you couldn’t just send someone to a therapist. Allowing Carl and Lena to wed keeps your daughter happy (and alive) and somewhat protects the family name. Or you continue to disallow the relationship and your daughter eventually either kills herself or winds up an unwed mother which was almost a fate worse than death. It seems Lena had an absolutely unhealthy love for Carl and some mental instability as well and lived in a time and place where there was no real help available to her. I would have liked to have known more about the strange incident when Lena was 'injured' prior to their marriage... hes definately guilty, playing the mother and both daughters against each other imo
I might feel badly for him taking his own life if he didn't *blatantly* ignore the court by writing about his crime and then completely disappearing. They should have just left him in jail then, or not commuted his sentence at all if he's going to be this dishonest about it. An innocent person would jump at the chance to start a new life and begin anew, but all he did was technically commit more crimes.
What? He literally admitted luring people out of their homes under false pretenses in the past (the mom was one of them). Now the mom gets lured out once again, and the maid said it sounded like Carl? There's more proof he did it than the daughter. Maybe he wanted her dead so his wife could inherit her fortune. Witness testimony is the worst testimony as people are often mistaken in what they see. very unreliable..and only one random person says they saw him at the railway, all the other witnesses seem to point to him, for the most part.
@@susanivy3619 Exactly he admitted to such behavior in the past, but he didn't kill before. So the daughter used that to her advantage. That's just my opinion, because the way things played out after his conviction
@@susanivy3619 Also the maid and people saying it looked and sounded like him that's all considered circumstantial evidence, i firmly believe he was framed. Like people can plot and communicate back in those days with letters and just destroy the paper trail. Feel like it would be much easier to plot back then and get away with it. Now a days people be texting, emails and phone records they can be got a hold of to expose certain things, so yeah that's just my opinion
@@sharonpratt9824 Hi Guess we will never fully know but I think Carl Hua and Olga were secretly romancing and this was their plan to get her mother out of the way and take all her money. But just my opinion is all...
So unfortunate that Lina killed herself. A whole family destroyed. This is a hard one, so not sure what to think but Carl buying the disguise is sus. The motive isnt particularly strong either.
So I guess we'll never know for sure if he was guilty or not! A tragic case that will forever stay unsolved like so many out there! A very well told story as always Brief Case 👍
Had to go to the web site and read, not sure what to believe. Too bad he killed himself instead of living out his days as a free man. I hope his grandson finds what he is looking for.
Yet another very interesting video! I tend to agree with other comments about him buying the items of disguise seems strange and does hint towards his guilt. Maybe he wanted the mother-in-law and sister-in-law out of the way so that his wife would be given the bulk of the remaining inheritance??🤔
Intriguing case--and special thanks for linking to the hau site. Your vids are always objective in looking at the crime and suspects, which helps keep the facts clear to ponder.
A strange and fascinating case indeed! It sounds as though Carl Hau was guilty. If he wasn't, who else would have committed the crime, and for what reason? But so much, especially the motive and the real relationship between Carl and Olga, remains a mystery.
Except he wrote a book about his experience then killed himself. I think he wanted his side to get out before he died. He knew writing the book would land him back in jail but it was important to him to do so and he left no legacy other than that. He didn’t profit from it. Sad, sad case. I think it was one of the old lady’s children.
I think he was guilty, however there was not enough evidence to convict him. He was convicted on having a motive, not evidence of guilt. Also, the improper way the trial was held guaranteed he would not get a fair trial. Having the victim's heart on display was disgusting sensationalism.
Hmm, if the disguise was not for him to wear during the murder, then who/whom? (Can’t remember which is correct. LoL) Seems Lena may have had self esteem issues...or maybe knew more about the murder and had a guilty conscience. Either way, I’m sure she left her daughter confused. And the steps she took, thinking it would separate her daughter’s life from all this, only to have her grandson research everything. Nothing stays hidden. Thanks for the great work on this video!
This case reminds me of the 1954 trial and conviction of Sam Shepard, an osteopath in the US convicted for the murder of his wife solely based on the knowledge that he was proved to be an adulterer and because of other circumstantial evidence. He denied he did it, but with the circus-like sensationalism generated by the press at the time which prejudiced the public together with the fact that he had a paramour he was constant in seeing, the jury found him guilty. From what I understand, he was given a prison sentence and was released later, but was never successful and died indigent. His son, who always believed in his father's innocence, pursued his theory by having DNA testing done recently, and it was shown that the DNA on the window was that of a handyman/electrician/contractor who was hired to do some work for the Shepards. It looks as if the innocent man took the rap for the guilty one. At least his son believes so. If that is true, then too bad for him.
This one is hard to say but I lean to either him or very remotely his wife Lina. Breaking down the case, I don't think the sister did it, by all means her name comes out as dirt for having a crush on him when she's 19 but she seemingly has no contact with him until the family trip . The reason I think the wife Lina could have done it is she seems both jealous and unstable. Though had she been the true culprit I think the younger sister would have been murdered not her mother, so that kind of rules her out. So that leaves Carl, who spent beyond his means and could have killed his mother-in-law for money, then had remorse after his wife died and relinquished any right to it because he felt guilty over his wife's death.

That is just the plot twist I imagined as well
Oooh, that’s a very interesting theory and one that I have heard of happening before.
Intriguing case. You bring these past events back to life.
Thankyou
It's always so sad to hear about lives that begin with so much promise ending in tragedy. Having said that it's another great installment from Brief Case! Thanks for the upload and goodnight from New Zealand 😊
How sad and morbid. Why would they display the mother's heart in court? Sounds like he was set up. Who ever killed the mother, had to live with that on their conscience for life.
Unless they had no conscience...
@@Flamsterette that's even worse. My conscience would cause me to be sick and yes, I tell on myself. Could be I have good morals. Someone sold me a jukebox and I found out it was stolen, police took it, much to the chagrin of my husband. I couldn't live with it. It was brought back a month later with a receipt, PAID IN FULL
@@dixiegeorge9665 Eventually, I'd like to think that someone's conscience would get the better of them, but occasionally it just isn't there. Good on you for the jukebox.
@@Flamsterette I knew how bad my husband wanted it but when I knew it was stolen, I felt dirty.

Good Morning Brief Case.
Good morning, yay I'm early!! 😆 thank you for always making wonderful videos.
No problem

Maybe Carl and Olga were in on it together. I think they were cheating, so it's possible that they killed her mother for her inheritance. Another great video
Good morning BC! ❤️
Morning!
That is indeed a strange and tragic case. I'm thinking one of her daughters wanted her dead. Sad as it might be and framed him.
Like the dude that was recruited to play him like why would he come forward if he got his cut paid for his role in the whole thing to say other wise. People cold blooded.
@@Chrissy259hi yep i feel ya could of been. Real possibility
So unfortunate that Lina killed herself. A whole family destroyed. This is a hard one, so not sure what to think but Carl buying the disguise is sus. The motive isnt particularly strong either.

Good morning and thank you.....never a dull moment with u

The tragedy of this case is Lena's suicide 😞 Thanks BC 😀👍

New episodes of Briefcase are my monday morning coffee!
Thank you! IMO too much reasonable doubt to convict, but not sure of innocence. Will definitely explore website you recommend!
Intriguing case--and special thanks for linking to the hau site. Your vids are always objective in looking at the crime and suspects, which helps keep the facts clear to ponder.
Another great video!! Thank you!❤️❤️
Thanks for watching!
Thank you BC. Love the fascinating history you bring to life!:-) 🖖
Thankyou
Thanks brief case another sad but interesting story
A strange and fascinating case indeed! It sounds as though Carl Hau was guilty. If he wasn't, who else would have committed the crime, and for what reason? But so much, especially the motive and the real relationship between Carl and Olga, remains a mystery.
Except he wrote a book about his experience then killed himself. I think he wanted his side to get out before he died. He knew writing the book would land him back in jail but it was important to him to do so and he left no legacy other than that. He didn’t profit from it. Sad, sad case. I think it was one of the old lady’s children.
TS 10:00 Lipton's Tea in big letters on the building; one of my favorite teas; not the only one, just one of☕☕☕
I think he was guilty, however there was not enough evidence to convict him. He was convicted on having a motive, not evidence of guilt. Also, the improper way the trial was held guaranteed he would not get a fair trial. Having the victim's heart on display was disgusting sensationalism.
Thank you so much you deserve n award good effort great job
Just...yikes! I have no words. That's incredibly rare for me, so my silence speaks volumes.
Yay! I'm so happy there's a new video! You're the best!
Thankyou so much
Sad and disturbing case. Great narration and attention to detail, as always. Have a great day.
Thanks for listening
Hmm, if the disguise was not for him to wear during the murder, then who/whom? (Can’t remember which is correct. LoL) Seems Lena may have had self esteem issues...or maybe knew more about the murder and had a guilty conscience. Either way, I’m sure she left her daughter confused. And the steps she took, thinking it would separate her daughter’s life from all this, only to have her grandson research everything. Nothing stays hidden.
Thanks for the great work on this video!
I have never heard of him. Thank you very much for this link.
I love the pictures....I think about how long it took to travel from Europe to America and vice versa.
Thanks BC! What a convoluted tale! I like the photo of the antique telephone though ☎️😎
Oh, and the heart being put on display in the courtroom!?😳
Very interesting case, I love the fact that alot of your videos are cases I haven't heard thank you very much.
Thanks for listening
Crazy case, thank you BC, awesome as always, enjoy your week. 🇨🇦🐘🍁🤗
Double thumbs up for telling a story i had never heard!
