I have that same lathe Tomislav. I've had it a year and I have no complaints. I was initially surprised how quiet mine was at 1000 rpm. And that motor never gets hot. Rotate that headstock about 20 degrees when you are turning the inside of bowls. It's a back saver. I also got the extended banjo that mounts on the end of the bed below the motor. Just in case I decide to turn something larger than 14". Congratulations on the new lathe and your new building. I enjoy watching you turn.
Great to see things coming back together. Great to see you turning again. Looking forward to seeing your opinion of the Harvey and seeing the shop transform to the configuration that works for you. 👍👍
There must be some weird interaction with the microphone because, like he said (and I can attest, I have a T-40), you can hardly hear it in person, especially below ~2000RPM.
@@nathangoodson7390can also attest to this, my window fan is louder than this thing at 2000 rpm. It’s so quiet at normal speeds that it honestly borders on dangerous lol
True, I don't have microphone set like I used to have so it Picks up all the sounds when turning.... When lathe benches are made and dust hoods then I'll sort microphone and camera stand😄
This is the lathe that I have. I love it. I love the power and features. I also like how you can set the speed to zero and turn the switch on and it keeps the chuck from spinning. It's good for holding your piece where you want it without having to engage the lock. I will say after about 3 years I'm having a small problem with the switch not engaging first time every time. And my motor doesn't sound like that, mine is whisper quiet. 🤔 I'll be upgrading to the big Harvey soon. 🤞
Thank you very much,Glad to hear that and I'll be checking if everything is ok with the motor once I have Electric work finish tommorow ☺️ enjoy your bigger harvey
I bought a T40 almost 2 years ago and I have been pretty happy with it, though I have some complaints. I will be interested to see if you will encounter the same problems. I noticed the Richard Raffan-style dust hood you created in your next video and wondered if you could still rotate the headstock with the collector in place. Rotating the headstock is by far the best feature of the lathe! Congratulations on the new shop, it looks fantastic!
Here’s wishing you the best of luck with your new adventure? Just love the way you demonstrate your techniques. Keep up the great job. Looking forward to your new lathe and all your turnings.
Congratulations Tomislav on you new Harvey lathe! I have the Harvey T50 and I absolutely love it, I hope you get as much enjoyment and value from yours as I do from mine!
It is awesome to see that your new shop is coming together to the point you can turn again. Wow that does look like an amazing lathe. Keep up the amazing work 👽.
Dear Tomislav, Great to see you back in action. I do not intend changing my Oneway 1640 but I must say the T-40 seems very interesting. Harvey tools take a lot of caution in packing their impressive products. I did buy a bench saw sliding table from them and the quality both of the product and packing were above standard. Happy turning. 😊
Local club acquired a Harvey like yours. Several members spent some time on it during open shop session and all shared 16:32 your lack of affection for the control panel. 16:09
I just recently saw the press release on Harvey Lathes. They sound great. I am totally looking forward to your honest review! It sounds like Harvey “did their homework” and put together a quality machine. I’m staying tuned in to your channel!
Nice lathe, sir. I looked up the base model for the t40 here in the US. It is selling for around $2,299.00 USD. With the extension, I imagine the price goes up about 3-4 hundred dollars.
Nice looking lathe. I have the Harvey table saw and have been well pleased with it. Since my Rikon lathe has a movable control and I have gotten use to that, I think that would be a good improvement Harvey could add. Glad to see you making shavings again. Hope your new shop is set up soon ... we miss your turning videos.
The inside the shop doesn’t even look like Started with. You have made tons and tons of improvements and it looks like it’ll be a joy to work in and create wonderful videos once you get your lighting and camera set up.
Turning that spindle - I would suggest some protection for the spindle threads. Having to reach over the headstock to the controls seems questionable. Is that grating in the floor for shavings? Good luck with the new lathe and shop!
Hi Tomi, I'm glad you've settled in and are back in business. The lathe looks well made, the quality can be seen even in the video. But servo motor ???? I have some reservations that something like this is needed on a wood lathe. And my friend, 1 HP is 1 HP everywhere in the world.😇 I look forward to the full evaluation.
Thank you very much, its new to me as well, haven't had opportunity to use a lathe with servo motor so time will tell and me in review video how it behaves, also I know 1hp is 1hp , I can't wait to test it on bigger pieces and bites to test it out properly,I probably said it wrong, the tourque response is like on bigger lathes power even on bigger then 1hp... Its weird and I want to test it like I said😀
I have been wanting to hear from a professional turner on this lathe. Likes: self ejecting in the tailstock quill, and the tailstock lock lever doesn’t seem to fall down and self lock. I would like to hear more about that motor which is a unique choice, and the quality/durability of the spindle lock. That rapid acceleration of the motor may seem nice but I know it would have gotten me in trouble a few times. The switch gear I wish was remote mountable down closer to the tailstock end. I look forward to seeing and hearing what you think after really getting to know it.
Me to as well, Can't wait to put it through some real turning 😄, I'm also not a fan of switch location and Also curious about motor how it will perform, however the rest is made so quallity so I hope it should last for years
Can you use the red button to stop the lathe and then pull the red button up tp start again? That way you can leave the forward and reverse switch in the position you want! very nice lathe. thanks of sharing.
Tomislav, I love watching your videos. I do learn a lot. Interesting thing is that the Harvey was my first lathe. Bought it about three years ago. No problems! I have a new larger one coming. Was really tempted to go with Harvey - they have sales pretty often here in US. I went with Rikon because of 5 year warranty. Let's hope I did OK. It's not here yet.
Tomislav, You could have save your back a bit by lighting the load a bit by taking off the tail stock and banjo (and possibly the headstock) when setting the bed on the legs. Just saying. Looks good and looking forward to more turning videos. Keep moving forward. Cheers, Tom
Thank you Tom, I would do that but didn't have much space at that point so just wanna keep it on the lathe, and it was faster😄 but not reccomend 😀 Thank you as always for watching
Actually, the blue, three prong plug is indeed part of the European standard (evidenced by the round prongs set back in the shell, and one of them being larger than the other). They are single phase, with ground. Best used in industrial/outdoor/damp areas where you need the security of an earth connection. I run an older three phase motor on my lathe, in Germany, and the three-phase connector uses 5 pins: 4 standard pins for each phase and neutral, and one oversized pin for ground. You can always tell an IEC plug by the round pins laid out symmetrically inside a shell, with one being thicker than the others for ground.
Nice looking lathe. Seems noisy? In process of buying new lathe, would be interested in how it rates against the Vicmark 150. More expensive but has the rotating headstock, which is great. Happy to see your new workshop up and running.
Thank you John, it seems louder but I have measured and its a bit lower noise then my Killinger,I guess due to different sound motor makes and the mikrophone orientation it sounds louder, but I'll be on the lookout if that is ok. I would like to compare to vicmark, owning vicmark lathe is a dream for one day in the future ☺️
Real shop space... wow! I think maybe you are getting serious about this now Tom. Just kidding... good job, ... good workout too. I hope your heart is healthy!
It's a T-40! I have seen that box in many of your videos and thought it looked familiar. I can't wait to see what you can do with it! I've enjoyed mine a lot, especially the quiet and powerful motor! It does seem to sound differently (much more noticeable) on video, though. Weird. For Americans who are interested but haven't looked, they have had big sales--like this becomes as cheap as the cheapest 1HP midi out there--that they'll announce in their newsletter. Customer service is great, as well! #notsponsoredbutinlove
Thank you for your feedback on this, not sure yet if this is normal sound or not, I did have microphone pointed on the lathe so it picks up all the sounds on the lathe since I don't have everything set up just yet, but its something to look at in time for sure☺️ Thank you once again
Thank you for sharing! I will be very interested in your opinion of the servo motor and it's claim for consistent torque across the speed range especially when turning larger bowls.
Hallo Tomislav! Very nice lathe. I am happy for you and your New Shop but i guess there is a lot to do until you get your whole setup done. Glad to hear that you are planning to do classes . I would be really intersted on one of these.
I’ve been sorry that I sold my old lathe when I got my new one. I thought I needed the space, but now I wish I’d managed to move things around instead.
Your first impressions of the Harvey sound like what I’ve heard others say. They seem to be a very well made lathe. You said it is €3,000. I checked the US price and it looks to be $2,300. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think a few months down the road.
Thank you Doug, they do change prices a lot but this one has legs and bed extention addition so its a bit more expensive.... I also can't wait to put some real work on it
Very nice looking quality lathe. It appears to compare favorably with the midi teaching lathe I own, the PM2014 in terms of cost and functionality. In the US I would say that is probably the only other lathe that would be that close to the Harvey. The obvious difference is the power requirement of 220V vs 110 for the Powermatic. The other big difference is the rotating headstock vs the sliding HS on the PM. I think it is important for anyone buying a lathe to actually find someone who has one and try it out. How the turner personally feels about specific lathe features can make all of the difference in the world. I am sure you will enjoy it. Is this the 4th lathe you have had in your shop over the last two years, Tomi?
I think the PM is a significantly more robust machine, it's not as flashy, but it's solid and has years of dependability behind it. There are no 10 year old Harvey lathes out there to have any idea if they will be as reliable as the PM over time. ( that servo motor makes me nervous for a heavy duty machine )
Thank you Mike, so far its up there with my Killinger lathe ,but I need to put it through tests and through my usual work to see about that switch and motor.... Other stuff I'm confident it will be ok as its robust and really nice quallity feel.... Powermatic was on my wish list and I think its probably best company for every woodworking machine out there.... Maybe one day I'll have one😄. Aaa yes its forth lathe in 2 years, but I was always trying to upgrade to a level as Killinger as I have now and this Harvey Will be great addition to teaching and filming. Also When Mike Mahoney likes it then it should be ok for me 😄😄... Thank you Mike for watching 🤗
For aligning the tail extension, I have found over the years that setting a straight edge along the main and the extension, then clamping the straight edge from above, and the bed [and] extension from below gets a excellent alignment. Also, absolutely, congratulations on the addition to the shop.
Im jealous as hell Tomek. Always wanted Harvey tool set but theyvwere 50% more than Laguna so I went that route. That said Im very happy with the 18/36 and the fusion 3, the bandsaw is hard to tune so I have a love hate with it.
Yet another excellent video. I really enjoy, appreciate and learn from your videos. Many, many thanks Tomasic. Whoops I think I used your surname instead of of your given name. My apologies. Alan
The Harvey lathe looks like a great lathe. My only criticism from what you’ve shown is the motor noise. It seems to whine more than your other lathe. It’s even louder than my Laguna 1524 which is only a hobby level machine. I’m happy with it except for the banjo design which is poor at best. It works but it’s a poor design in my opinion. Glad to see you turning again Tomislav!! 😊
I have the Harvey T-60 and it is amazingly quiet. A very solid machine, you have to do something wrong to make it vibrate. RPMs remain consistent unload or when lightly cutting.
Thank you buddy, I was curious about the noise as well, use cheap decibel meter on phone and on 1600rpm harvey is quiter lathe,I think due to different sound it May sound louder, but I'll check with customer service once I have the Electrician tommorow to hook the shop😀
I assume that this a gift from your Father in law….😊 why 2….? Good luck and take care of you and your Family cheers croatian turner, cheers from Luxembourg 🇱🇺 europe
Achtung!
Thank you Kevin, I'll put it through paces and report back how it performs and sounds, microphone was pointed at the lathe so it picks up a lot more noise then usually as I don't have everything set up just yet.
Pleased that everything is going well with your move and new shop setup. Looking forward to more of your videos which are undoubtedly the best explanatory ones out there and from a consummate professional. But honestl that lathe motor sounds awful, like it's having the mechanical equivalent of a heart attack.😮 There is no way I could put up with that for long----sorry
Thank you very much, no need for sorry as its different motor and lathe for me as well... It remind me of old lathe I learn on from BRATSTVO STROJEVI that were soo loud when just turned on without wood... Can't wait to put it through the tests
That looks like a very nice lathe. Great video!👍🏻
If looks count for anything, Harvey has that aspect nailed.
Its nicely made lathe, only those bearings are lould but the new ones are on the way.
I purchased the Harvey T40 about 5 years ago. Was my first lathe and I love it customer service is fantastic! I highly recommend.
Thank you for your feedback 😀
thanks fdor all yr videos ibe learned so much, keep them coming
What a way to christen a new shop! Congrats and joy for you and your family in your new place!
Thank you Greg ☺️

Danke to you sir, I really appriciate support
Great to see things coming back together. Great to see you turning again. Looking forward to seeing your opinion of the Harvey and seeing the shop transform to the configuration that works for you. 👍👍
Thank you Mark, means a lot
Can't say I like the sound of those motors.
Very happy to see your shop coming together. Wishing you all the best!

I will have to unscrew the hood in order to swing the head stock but I never use that feature, I'm just used to work with lathe fixed😀
You have come a long way from your original lathe, and shop. I wish all the best to you and your family with your new home
It doesn't seem to matter which kind of lathe you are using the bowls and other things you turn on them still look great
Here’s wishing you the best of luck with your new adventure? Just love the way you demonstrate your techniques. Keep up the great job. Looking forward to your new lathe and all your turnings.
Happy for another sponsorship for you, and glad the shop is almost done. Looks like a very nice lathe indeed.
Thank you buddy
Watch and learn from you all the time. It's so nice to see you back at it again! I wish you all the luck in the future.
Thank you very much
Congratulations Tomislav on you new Harvey lathe! I have the Harvey T50 and I absolutely love it, I hope you get as much enjoyment and value from yours as I do from mine!
Thank you mr.Kevin
It is awesome to see that your new shop is coming together to the point you can turn again. Wow that does look like an amazing lathe. Keep up the amazing work 👽.
Good thing you are a big guy! New shop is coming together nicely. All we see is the results not all the days of hard work it took to get there.
Thank you, true, lot work has been done to this Point 😀

That's a hell of a fancy lathe
Congratualations for the second lathe and the first shavings in the new shop!
i wish you all the best for the start in this shop.
Thank you very much
Congratulations on your new lathe . Looks very solid and smooth running. Can't wait for more videos.
Thank you very much 🤗
You're nearly there! A few adjustments and you'll be making shavings full time! I'm looking forward to a shop tour once it's complete.
Thank you Richard, hopefully tommorow I'll film it and publish it😀
So glad things are coming along well. Having a second lathe is a real help for me.

Indeed,its not a good place
Shop is looking great. Looking forward to your future videos with the new lathe.
I look forward to seeing the new lathe in operation. Now it is time to get shop up and running. Thanks for all the updates.
i don't know why, but I love "unboxing" videos. this one of the best. Good luck with the evaluation and can't wait to follow along with you.
Thank you Robert, I appriciate that ☺️
I just recently saw the press release on Harvey Lathes. They sound great. I am totally looking forward to your honest review! It sounds like Harvey “did their homework” and put together a quality machine. I’m staying tuned in to your channel!
Thank you I really appriciate that ☺️
Enjoy the new toy. They do a great job of boxing and shipping it. Even turn the box and plywood into other things, win-win.
The shop is looking good and I bet you will be an excellent instructor.
Nice to see you making chips and shavings! Thanks for sharing the journey!
Congratulations on the new lathe.
Thank you sir🤗
You're nearly there Tomi. Pleased for you.
Thank you Jim☺️

Good luck with the new lathe and shop!
So glad to see you almost up and running. I miss your videos always look forward to your content.

New toy. Christmas in August!
I’ve been sorry that I sold my old lathe when I got my new one. I thought I needed the space, but now I wish I’d managed to move things around instead.
Hi Tomislav, how come you didn’t get a Vicmarc Lathe like Richard has? Especially when you have Vicmarc chucks?
That would be awsome and dream come true but Its hard to get vicmark lathe for review but one day for sure☺️
Your first impressions of the Harvey sound like what I’ve heard others say. They seem to be a very well made lathe. You said it is €3,000. I checked the US price and it looks to be $2,300. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think a few months down the road.

@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning it’s possible that it sounds worse on the video than in person 🤷🏼♂️
Even in Croatia, WD-40 is close at hand!
Oooo yeah 😄
I assume that this a gift from your Father in law….😊 why 2….? Good luck and take care of you and your Family cheers croatian turner, cheers from Luxembourg 🇱🇺 europe
Achtung!
Around the 1 minute mark, I thought we were about to get a pole dance! 😅
🤣🤣
I'd really like a new lathe, but there's no way I'll be able to afford that. Enjoy your time with it.
That new shop of yours is going to get awfully full at this rate.
Its already full but it has warm feeling that the other one didn't, and its not summer heat😄
Pozdrav ! Kaj bu te sa starim tokarskim ?

Wow. 🍻.
This lathe is making a strange noise. Maybe the belt is to tight.
I have tried everything, still same sound although I had mic pointed at the lathe so it picked up everything but its something to watch out for ....
It remind me of old bratstvo i jedinstvo strojevi, you might remember those,I learn on those lathes and they are really lound ☺️
Why did you need it
Tomislav you are a top Turner, a very skilled man. That lathe made in china and it’s very noisy
Thank you Kevin, I'll put it through paces and report back how it performs and sounds, microphone was pointed at the lathe so it picks up a lot more noise then usually as I don't have everything set up just yet.
❤
A good looking lathe Tomislav…except for that switch box. Totally in the wrong place.
I know ☺️ its something to get used to
Pleased that everything is going well with your move and new shop setup.
No Safety Glasses?
Well I’m so sorry, but I find it quite noisy, and I am deaf.
😄😄that is ok, I still don't know ih that is ok for this lathe or not, like I said it will be put through its paces in next few months 😄
Looks like a solid lathe!!
I agree, it is a bit on the noisy side.
Make some money, then make some videos!
