We need a rail system like this connecting Joburg, Cape Town and Durban. I have done it once by bus and many times by air. If there was something like this I would use it instead of air.
Jozi north of CBD didn't have rail infrastructure so Gautrein is to give it infrastructure. It's also part of the overall rail in Gauteng along with Metrorail that's why Park Station & Pretoria Station are interchange stations with Metrorail. The train is very safe and reliable (just check the operating hours because they don't run 24hours and have humans "driving" them). In some stations there are conflicts between Uber and metered cab drivers - so at Park Station and Centurion, it's hard to request an Uber outside.
In an african continent point of view it is. And these ones are speed limited. There is no need to go more than 160kms per hour. Maybe one day if they extend the project to other provinces beyond Gauteng.🇿🇦🏆✔️
A high speed train (or Bullet train) is classified as 250km/h or higher. Calling Gautrain a bullet train is pure click bait. Morocco has a proper high speed rail which will be joined by Egypt's new system shortly. I appreciate your coverage of rail as South Africa needs more positive news but call it for what it is.
very smart, clean and modern... not dissimilar to the UK setup (although probably a lot newer). In the UK you can get to just about every city, town or village by train.... they are convenient but are cheap... they do have problems, especially with the unions constantly going on strike... I take it this trip was done out of peak time as the carriages were empty... how affordable is this for the average person.. how much would that same journey cost by 'mini bus taxi'?
As an expat in the UK you calling the train services “cheap” is laughable. UK is notorious for having expensive trains, not like other European countries that are much cheaper with train journeys
