    I think you miss a lot of spots about Lain. Basically Lain is a software (sort of like the matrix oracle). But is not only Lain, is also her parents, and sister. Also a lot of computer analog to real life. Lain becomes a unix super user in a network world, so basically lain has the access to impersonate other users, and rewrite their actions or memories at least. This is better explain more toward the end. Lain being a 'god user' (or root user).
    Lain has a bunch of easter eggs related to computing, like the "to BE continued" with the BeOS logo, or some navis looking like the old colored iMacs. etc.

      Br Ba From what I understand, the actual God. Lain just planted herself and all those other people into it so she could see what it's like to be a normal human

    this anime is about a young schoolgirl named lain who gradually becomes aware that she is not like other girls. eventually realizing that she is merely software created for the sole purpose of allowing mad scientist masami to achieve his goal of total control over the virtual world aka "the wired". the anime begins with masami having limited power within the wired, allowing for the virtual reality to begin filtering into the material world, this is why weird shit is happening right from the start. but masami needs more strength and he can only accomplish this with lain by his side as his goddess queen. with full control over the wired, the wall between virtual and material reality will collapse and the two worlds will merge. but to masami's chagrin, lain turns on him and thus defeats him, restoring reality to its former state while remaining god of the wired with limited power. yeah that got it.

    Definitely seems like something that you like more and more as you rewatch it and uncover more levels.
    One of my interpretations is it's sort of a cautionary tale against communication via the internet. The internet anonymity is both a blessing and a curse. Lain has few friends and is shy, but when she goes to the web she gains many friends and becomes a lot more confident. But later on it's shown that the group she belongs to may be using her. Also I interpreted Lain's alternate persona as being the negative effects from this overuse.
    But that's just one view of it, there's a whole website somewhere dedicated to theories for this show.

    One must be careful referencing lines lain has used prior to the ending. Lain, you see, goes through multiple, personal, forms of evolution and growth which in turn, changes her overlooking opinion of the world and its workings. In other words, just because Lain thinks that technology is superior in one episode, it doesn't necessarily mean that is her final form of opinion. Her final form opinion is conceived within the final episode and that's the opinion of hers that counts in the end.
    This is simply a in-depth clarification from a die hard fan of the series. Btw, great video.

    I first watched this when I was ten and my mom randomly picked it up because this was the time when my interest in anime started to bloom. In some sense I understood it, but when I started to use the internet myself and became confident in signing up for websites and such was when I REALLY understood this show.
    The double personality thing made sense when I realized that internet trolls and people in general are completely different in real life then on the internet.
    Technology helps us evolve and how lost we would be without it.
    And other stuff like that, nowadays I can confidently say I love this anime.
    Awesome review.

    The symbolism is skyrocketed to 20 in this show.

  • @Midsomnyx

    I love the ending of this show, I guess I'll say spoiler? But she basically erases her existence by removing any trace of herself from the Wired. Makes me think that, if we were to disconnect from the internet and never interact with it, no one would know who we are, which is kinda becoming true nowadays, even though I watched this anime... 6 years ago?

    hmm I know you don't typically take fan recommendations but I think you would like an anime called Black Rock Shooter. It kinda makes you figure it out on your own giving you very little information on it but not exactly in the symbolic way that anime like lain does, but for some reason it just had this gravity about it that makes it interesting, and there is symbolism with the settings they put you in and etc. I think it's at least worth checking out and if you don't like the anime then I would recommend at least looking up some fan art about it, because black rock shooter has probably the best fan art in anime history.

    My current theory for this show is this: Lain has Schizophrenia. It is actually a popular theory, as Lain shows signs of all the symptoms of that disorder.

      @englishfury1544 10 лет назад +2

      i haven't heard that one but i suppose it could be possible,.
      www.denbeste.nu/Chizumatic/tmw/SerialExperimentsLain.shtml
      he has a very interesting theory that makes a fair amount of sense, he came to a lot of the same conclusions as i did but he expands on it much better than i could, i cant say i entirely agree but its a very interesting read.
      i really enjoy other peoples ideas about this show, as it is different for just about everyone.

    • @giangerd3686
      @giangerd3686 10 лет назад

      What the heck? Lain was a program created by the god of the wired to unite real world with the wired but then she twisted it and became something different,it was even stated in the show! she was not a schizophrenic person,if that was the deal then the whole wired theme would be unnecessary and her family members behaviour would be normal

    • @adriangecko9147
      @adriangecko9147 10 лет назад +1

      Gian gerd Schizophrenia deals with delusions, specifically ones dealing with paranoia. It is entirely possible that much of what is around her is merely a hallucination.

    • @englishfury1544
      @englishfury1544 10 лет назад +1

      Gian gerd
      that is yet another interpretation of the show.
      in my view lain is the embodiment of the wired given human form by tachibana labs.

    Watching this makes Ergo Proxy seem pretty straightforward in comparison. Since just about everything is communicated beneath the surface, it's definitely the most cryptic anime I've ever started. I can't say it holds much interest for me with there being no real logical flow to the plot itself so far, but since I started it, I have to at least finish it.
    Luckily, your Spice and Wolf review came just in time to temporarily distract me from this, and for that I am eternally grateful.

    I don't know why we should trust anything Eiri says about Lain being a computer program herself. I thought it was just a weird analogy for human beings generally, and he is constantly trying to emotionally abuse her and manipulate her into doing what he wants.
    What I'm trying to understand is just where "Evil Lain" came from: At one point, when she meets Eiri for the second or third time as the mercury blob, she exclaims, "You passed these dupes off as me!?", and I'm trying to figure out if Evil Lain is her own internal identity crisis or an external entity (or both). Lain sockpuppets would explain why people saw another version of Lain all the way back in Episode 2 and the decoys on the Wired in the scene I just referred to, but does not explain the intense conflict later on, or how Evil Lain can appear in Alice's bedroom during a...private moment.

      SPOILERS!
      It seemed li ke tehy knew all about Lain actually being a computer program originally, but what they were trying to do with that knowledge completely baffles me. But yes, they were very cheesy. lol

    How can someone in the age of the Internet, posting videos on youtube, be confused about what the Wired? The Wired just is the Internet. The consequences of the Internet are shown more fantastically through a combination of science fiction and conspiracy theories, but it is just the Internet. It must have been confusing when the show came out because of how far ahead of its time it was, but I don't think this aspect of the show at least should be confusing today.

    the intertwining of reality & technology and the real world effects of it is the basic premise of the show. & we found out later that Lain is a software, which explains her fascination with the Wire (internet). This show was good but not on the level of Ergo Proxy imo.

    There are two anime I want you to see. The first is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know you said that you don't want to watch it, but it has quite a few similarities to SEL and Ergo Proxy even if I haven't seen either yet.
    The other, completely unrelated to SEL, is a Mecha anime called Gurren Lagann. Granted it's incredibly stupid, in fact parts of it make Date a Live look like Death Note, but I guarantee you will enjoy yourself watching it.

    I guess everybody gets something their own out of it... for me this anime is like a giant fuck you to decart... I am no philosopher but this anime alone with zegapain(which I think you should also review) changed my philosophical outlook on what it means to be one's self.. now I think the defining thing a person has is their memories, it is now my contention that if you had a different set of memories you'd literally be a different person...
    this anime does spoon feed you shit via narration: like explaining why the boundaries between the wired and the 'real world' are vague(that field that permeates space and interacts with conscious minds)... spoiler kinda it spoon feeds you exactly what lain is also... and a myriad of other things... ah fuck I'll stop here...
