Virgil’s drumming has arguably been at the leading edge for many decades, with his accomplished compositional and orchestration skills also gaining recognition. Never one to seek approval or security, he has maintained an introspective, independent mind, transcending traditional boundaries, always alert to the possibilities beyond the norm.
At the age of 16, Virgil turned pro to enable him to tour and focus on music, and he has since devoted his whole life to his art. The motivation has been his endless and restless pursuit to express himself through his playing.
During his formal years in his homeland Australia, he carved a path in the pop-rock scene culminating in multi platinum success with his band Southern Sons, at the same time pushing progressive and fusion boundaries with Loose Change, and On The Virg.
He has recorded and toured with the likes of Planet X, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, Tony MacAlpine, Kiko Loureiro, Bunny Brunel, Scott Henderson, Steve Walsh, and the Virgil Donati Band, amongst many others.

This performance is going to blow your mind! 🤯
It didn't because the structures are contrived in such a way as to be awkward and stiff. NONE of it resolves. It's exercises applied to riffs that are not music. Even an instrumental has to tell a story. Songwriting is important. Cont. success with your channel.
@@drummersagainstitk It already blew my mind 10 years ago when I bought the record "In this life". Virgil is like the freaky Steve Vai on drums. My guess is that your'e more a Satriani guy, or not?
@@frans_RUclips Great question. You're absolutely right. Vai/Virg very similar. Love Satriani. Frustratingly Virg is a technician but isn't committed what to do with all of it. He recruits players to connect his parts into something and sometimes disaster strikes. Holdsworth as well (another genius). Satriani not so much because he understands weaving song structures, shred and delivering live performance. Vai is great live too but not as consistent. Does this make sense to you? Be well.
@@drummersagainstitk Great point. i feel if it has no voice ie: no front man/lead singer? its just music notes played technically, but lacking meaning. I was heavily into Fusion in my 30's but have now grown out of it. Then again.. their skillful & talented players.. its each to their own
@@drummersagainstitkI like this composition even though it was complex. I still could groove. There were solo sections. I think it works.
Glad Virgil brought more people from his planet
Planet X! 🙃
Aliens exist and they are great musicians!
Spot on! 😆
Yeah, smiling and all. Those Planet x fellows
Genius comment 😎👌
Nobody can do what Virgil does. Nobody. He's the best there is. He's simply on another level entirely.
I have been waiting years for this to be public.
There are the best drummers in all the world. Great musicians in many kind of musical genres. But VIRGIL DONATI is another kind of evolution level.
From IN THIS LIFE. Some of the greatest recorded drum tracks are on this record. If you don't have it get it.
Andre Neri is fabulous on the guitar.
Anthony bass tone is so 🔥.....
My favorite track off album
Like, "wow, he knows their names...you're amazing, pal!"... that's what you were waiting for - right?
WTF That was some of the most insane things I've ever seen! My lord these guys are absolutely phenomenal!
I’ve been listening to this track for a year. I’ve played guitar for 50 years and I’m still trying to get started on this track. The best album I’ve heard in decades.
This is what happens when you build on Ian Paice’s playing and take drumming/music to another level.
Music from a Galaxy far Beyond from Musicians who dwell there ! As Virgil leads the path to Creative Freedom !
OMG. This is f’n unbelievable. Truly next level stuff
Just ridiculously good. Another level.... 🤘🙂👍
😳 WHAAAAAT..?! SIMPLY STUNNING!
Holy shit. Practice, practice, practice. Incredible
Incredible playing
the sound is incredible
Virgil, the alien 👽, from another planet.. 🤯
MIND-BLOWIIIIIIIING 🔥❤️
That tour line up was incredible. Also incredible is fact, that they play almost 1:1 arrangement from the album. And Andre... OMG this guy is amazing. In This Life was just epic!!
Everyone here who hasn’t do yourselves a favor and comb over Planet X, Derek Sherinian and Virgil’s discographies if you love this kind of stuff. It’s filled to the brim with music just like this. I’ve been listening since the early 2000’s and it’s made such a HUGE impact on my playing and songwriting. I’m a bass player and you can never not be inspired to practice harder and play better
I’ve been listening to this track for a year. I’ve played guitar for 50 years and I’m still trying to get started on this track. The best album I’ve heard in decades.
A masterful jam all around.
Saw this lineup in Phila at the Northstar Bar back in 14. Everyone was blown away by their music.
Truly spectacular - a performance which ought to go down in history.
Virgil es de mis top5 de bateristas de la vida .
En el 1
Virgil is amazing at rythem and writing songs . He loves to Manipulate the pulse and play polymeric phrasing.
Exceptional musicianship!
I used to play this song every day on my way to work.😊
All I haveto say is absolutely incredible!👍
I don't know how anyone can follow this of remember it and play it twice but his drums always sound excellent.
love this fantastic tune and great performance !
Such a treat...Thank you Drum channel!
Genius
Timing… Tempo… Tone… out of this world playing
It’s incredibly- for normal creatures this not to follow and predictable
"It's music, Jim - but not as know it...." 😎 (Actually I well remember hearing my granny sing this one over her sewing as dusk drew in and autumn shaded seamlessly into winter....)
Absolutely amazing !!
magnifico.💯💯💯💯💯💯
Lasering the brain clot from the miniaturized micro sub!
hoping they would released the entire concert..
Belleza .
Ace performance
Top notch mastering again!
insane!! 🤯🤯🤯
Toe tapping, got me bopping, started pulling faces and I even stuck my tongue out at one point. Happily moved.
Sublime …………
Congratulations to everyone involved 👌
Fantastic!
Such an inspiring musician, truly one of the greats of our age.
🤘

Although I find Virgils drumming interesting & technically amazing always, I'm not moved by the music melodically. I can appreciate all the metric modulation & odd meters but still not moved by the music.
Does not matter whether you are moved. He did not write it for your pleasure,He wrote it for His. You guys need to get out of your little self centered worlds. All the comments that I! Do not like it or feel it or get it. The guys who created this work do not care! They did not do this lying awake at night saying oh I hope all those guys who could never conceive this let alone play I sure hope they like what I did. They do not give a Shit they are too busy being Great!!
Get over yourselves and doing something great that we can criticize.
@@kirkarnold9255 With freedom of expression comes freedom of opinion, thats the way of the world.
You just have to work up to this level. I get it, absorb it and love it! It’s a language you’re still learning, give it time
tbh, i always thought planet x's was virgils best stuff. sure, he's pushing boundaries further each time but sometimes you need other people to keep you in line a bit. planet x was kinda , "kinda" a bit more easily digestable in terms of songwriting i think. virg's probably my favourite drummer but i always thought his most memorable stuff came out of him when "just" doing drums for bands or projects that weren't lead by him. like for example the song human hardware. i can even remember that intro beat from the top of my head. yeah, it's easier to digest and way less technical but i'd rather listen to that song 10x than this one here once because it's just more of a song in the end
Awesome sound and music. Greetings from Montreal!
good stuff indeed
That's pretty f*cking sweet. Damn!
Impecable!! Son unos verdaderos monstruos!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
amazing composition
Супер, обожаю этого барабанщика.
WOW! Very beautiful piece
Nice one guys! Sounds dope Virgil!
❤
Sublime! 🎭✨️👏🏼🙋🏻♂️🇦🇷
still love your work!!
Isto é extreme Prog Fusion Jazz!!😮😮🤯🤯
Nice kit.
Perfect Masterpiece and Performance 🎭👏🏼🙋🏻♂️🇦🇷
Awesome! Can hear shades of Rush's YYZ & La Villa Strangiato
Bello , hermoso ,efímero Virgil Donati un gran compositor y gran extraordinario baterista de esta época .
Maravilhoso. Nieri é f... Que bandão. Crowford, nunca vi um baixo com tanta corda kkk baita músico
Anyone know which Sabian ride he is using here?
Virgil is scary 🙏
Genial 👋👍👋
Wow, phenomenal trio👌
Trio??
Apologies, my mistake.
So sick!:)
Remember when Sabian had the good logo?
Exactly! I told the rep at NAMM the new logo looks like Pizza Hut. I bet Zildjian & Paiste would never wreck their brand like that.
5:17 I checked to see if I hadn't accelerated the video to 1.5x lol
👍👍👍👌
I definitely hear Vai in that beginning lead tone
This was my Bridal song 💒 🥁😅
Watch 3 Rules Band, fusion project from The Symphony x drummer Jason Rullo
Please share the entire peeformance of this amazing band
Blown
It's like King Crimson on steroids! Like they are all playing rounds and meeting back every few measures. Mind blowing amount of concentration needed for this stuff!
Haven't heard anything this whacked out since the last time I listened to the Trout Mask Replica album by Captain Beefheart.
Wow so technical
Good grief. Good stuff.
🙂👍👏👏👏
How would you even recover if you lost track of the 1
😂😂
you don't, you put your instrument down, bow and accept its not possible
🌹 💞 💞 💞
2023 meet 2016!
This is amazing but there’s some Japanese jazz fusion and Japanese metal that is doing stuff on this level that make you realize the world is a big place with a lot to sample.
Trust me we’re well aware of them! Japan is big with metal and fusion for sure! One of my favorites being Casiopea! Just an incredible force of talent and songwriting
I expected a dramatic finish. It was the opposite. But what a performance.
These guys are amazing, I just wish they could write a song!
They aren’t trying to follow the status quo 😉
Your brain isn’t there yet, you’d need to learn the language to understand the dialogue
Get rid of the mid roll ads! You can’t listen to a song with ads interupting every couple minutes, that’s stupid.
Someone have this tabs to share?
👂🏾😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫👂🏾
Great performance but did struggle to hear AC's solo.
perfect strangers ...teoria....quem rouba quem presume e quem faz plagio....
Yes. But what does it *mean*?
😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
Pah, El Estepario Siberiano would play this 10 times faster, 10 times more precise and without any arms.....
This is great ,so now AI can play instrument ....
Yeah I know, it's prog at its finest, but for an untrained ear it sounds like they're just failing and cannot play in time. Quite cacophonous
