Ah this is the first place we went on our last trip, been awake over 30 hours and went there for a pretzel and burgers before passing out 😅

Is it possible that the tatter tots had onion in them, not just fried in the oil? I know a lot of places mix a little onion in their tatter tots sometimes. However, it's normally a hint of it. So I was wondering if they're one of the restaurants that do that and either purposely, or accidentally put more diced onion in that batch. Even those type of tatter tots don't have that strong of an onion flavor. It's meant to be like a not so secret "secret recipe" that just adds another subtle flavor, essentially most people usually know what it is right away, but it's more subtle. However, putting it with a fryer that also fries onions will definitely increase it's onion flavor too.
That would be cool! Love it when that happens. But no, unfortunately, not in this case. We've had tots before and they had no hint of onion to them at all.
We were very disappointed last time at NBC grill.. we waited forever for the appetizers, once delivered the food was right behind the appetizers. Would have sent everything back but we were tired & hungry. Sad that you had a poor experience as well. 😢
