@Adam Neely I HAVE TO TALK TO YOU! I spoke to Yogev about this when his “gravity centers” video came out (we did a Zoom). I wrote my Master’s thesis in 1999 about something I called “Ampersand Rhythms” and what you’re doing in this video is bumping RIGHT up against my own rhythmic shenanigans in some super awesome ways - I feel like you’d really enjoy hearing a perspective (and some music) that is just a fraction of a degree different! I know it’s kind of absurd to say “hey let’s chat” to an internet superstar such as yourself, but when there are rad new rhythmic techniques to be shared, it’s worth a shot - plus, Yogev was interested enough to respond 😅 Let me know and I’ll be happy to give more details.

There’s a Swedish dance called the short-3rd-beat Polska. It’s counted in 3/4, but the last beat is (roughly, but with some variation) 66% as long as the first two. And those two long beats are (usually) divided evenly in two, and the short last beat is (often) divided into 3. It’s so wonky. I love that pulse melting and nested tuplet shit exists in folk music.

(edit: this was in David Bruce's video the Rhythms of Tigran Hamasyan.) a good exercise to learn to feel this is to try and fit a familiar-feeling 4 subdivisions in place of some triplets. check out the track dovetail nicely by the bad plus and peep the drums

But, in Brazil, Hermeto Pascoal has been doing that for a pretty long while, at least since the 80s, with things like 10 notes over a 7/8 samba, with six triplets and four dotted eights (sort of) stretching to cover the bar, for example.

I love your content. You're an amazing bass player, and it inspires me to try some new thing in my playing as a bass player myself. Meshuggha is another mind-blowing project that uses the same concept as you guys. Mad respect, much love, I hope I will have the chance to see you live when you come to canada❤❤I'm a big fan
