    I believe it was Mark Twain who stated that living near the Mississippi River could prove to be greatly adventurous. One night you go to bed living in Missouri, only to wake up a resident of Tennessee.

    • @Anon54387
      @Anon54387 3 года назад +21

      Twain mentioned in one of his books of someone that wanted to have his land closer to the Mississippi so he was digging a channel overnight where the water would flow through and if that channel enlarged enough there would be no stopping a course change for the river. But if his land would be closer to the river the land on the other side would be farther from river transport and thus less valuable while the land of the guy digging the channel would have his land be worth more. This is why he was doing it at night so that he wouldn't be observed and possibly shot by the other land owner.

      I think it's a red herring. I think he is a time traveler from the future, who went to the past, bought an old camera, went to the paster and shot the footage. Then moved into the future as we know it, and sold the camera to an antique shop. But he forgot the footage in the camera. So he went Back to the Future... to retrieve the footage. Finding he had to pay more for the camera than he sold it for. He went back a bit in the past and jumped himself, stealing the camera from himself. He the made it back to the past and added the footage to the video. He had to add "not the actual footage" to keep his future self from finding out he was jumped by his future self and seeking revenge.

    • @danielbliss1988
      @danielbliss1988 3 года назад +15

      Actually, there's 30 miles of open water in the summer, impassable pack ice in late fall and early spring, and drivable fast black ice in midwinter. During the hard-frozen season, though, it's still not all plain sailing because of the sheer distance involved, which is closer to something you'd expect to find at the NSF bases in Antarctica than an inland US lake and also considering the 25mph speed limit for ice roads in Minnesota (snowmobiles on a lake and off-road are allowed to do 50). With the border closure this year, Angle residents, for the first time, spent $130,000 on an ice road to keep things open but as mild as the winter was overall, that only got them from early January to early March. They recouped much of this with a vehicle toll -- $120 round trip to the mainland; $145 for a round trip including the offshore islands, $500 for an all-destination season pass.

      Been to Point Roberts and yeah it's super tiny and lowkey depressing. It's just off Vancouver BC.
      But there are those mailing companies there that let you use free shipping to America and then charge you rent for that, so we'd drive over to Point Roberts to collect our American mail every month or so.

    Point Roberts, Washington, was created when the United Kingdom and the United States settled the Pacific Northwest American-Canadian border dispute in the mid-19th century with the Oregon Treaty. Agreeing the 49th parallel to be the boundary between territories, the small area that incorporates Point Roberts is south of the 49th parallel. It is part of Whatcom County, Washington, United States. A lot of people still argue that the lower portion of Vancouver Island should also have been ceded to Washington.

    Vancouver Island and the city of Victoria could be considered a Canadian exclave, they extend far below the 49th parallel border and are more easily reached from the U.S. than mainland Canada. When The Pig War was resolved in 1871, it settled ownership of some of the large islands in Puget Sound and could have changed more.

    This is a favorite segment. Love it. Next, you may want to do a segment on the Interstate Highway system, explaining how the highways got their numbers: “Major Interstate routes are designated by one- or two-digit numbers. Routes with odd numbers run north and south, while even numbered run east and west. For north-south routes, the lowest numbers begin in the west, while the lowest numbered east-west routes are in the south.”

      Granted in this case it is hard to blame the treaty writers/negotiators, since the maps they had did not accurately reflect the geography and there was some ambiguity to it. Plus given the state of surveying at the time, in areas a long distance from anything populated, it is surprising there was not more issues with the US/Canadian border.
