Snails are a great addition to any planted aquarium for many reasons! In todays video we talk about the top 2 snails that can really help with algae control and even a few other things like cycling. You can purchase our snails online here: www.h2oplants.com/collections/snails
over the last 6 months ive started up a few fish tanks and picked up a few free snails on plants or however they made their way into my tanks. my one had 1 malaysian trumpet snail and i just noticed a few baby snails yesterday, my one other tank i noticed a bladder snail that was tiny and just a few weeks later hes huge and hes the usain bolt of snails, he does laps and its surprising how quick he is. i bought nerite snails for all my tanks and i have them still plus the new friends. ill keep them as long as they dont over take my tanks
That's awesome! I'm glad you are loving the snails and they are doing well for you. It's always fun getting them as extras with plants too. They are good for the ecosystem.
I had a snail infestation on a 5 gallon tank a while back from a couple of Mystery snails. It was not nice (with a nice heater they breed like crazy). In any case. Now I have Nerite's my question is, what size tank is best for either snail? I seem to find any gallon seems to work. I had a 20... good.. 10 good.. 5.. good. Is there any or issues that can come from smaller tanks? I have feeding pellets... they don't seem to go for them now.
I don't like nerite snails because they lay false eggs that are difficult to remove from rocks. I'll go with ramhorn or mystery snails. I guess putting the nerite snails in with no rock display would be good, especially since they eat the cyanobacteria.
thats the only thing i dont like about my nerites, only 1 tank has some snails that lay eggs literally all over. i can follow lines all ovr the tank leading upto 1 single snail going to town with eggs. all over the glass, wood, rocks literally everywhere and all over
@@newtguy not only lucky but as Rob said that the majority will not lay eggs unless something is out of balance and I am sure that's what I have experienced.
Do you have fresh water abalone snails? I have one and so far it’s 5 years old eats like a rabbit 🐇. Purchased a Japanese back trap snail 🐌 love the color and like my abalone snail eats like a rabbit. I been looking for the abalone snails but can’t find them anymore.
@@h2oplants630 you should get some info and make a video of them. I can send you pictures of what they look like just in case you can’t find them. I got mine from San Diego at aquatic warehouse. Expensive but worth it. They have a zebra like pattern on the foot
@@waterlover i know, i meant hes grown so much in just a few weeks, he was a little bigger than a pin head when i noticed him and now hes about the size of a pea if not bigger now
Hey Dennis. So apple snails can be mystery snails but mystery snails cannot be apple snails. It's confusing. The biggest difference is their size. Apple snails get huge where as mystery snails will stay about the size of a golf ball. I've seen some apple snails get to the size of a pool ball.
@@h2oplants630 i've heard of people saying that mystery snails eat green hair algae, is that true? And they say apple snails would eat my aquarium plants, is this also true?
Mystery snails available locally in my area including the ones from petsmart do eat plants. They eat a lot of plants! Even healthy ones. I once caught a mystery snail dragging a pothos stem into the water and eating it🤦♂️
@@h2oplants630 I wonder that too. Every lfs and box store (petsmart) maintains that they are mystery snails and will eat plants. I was curious since this conflicts with the internet and bought some from petsmart. They only carry mystery snails, not apple so figured it wouldn't be likely for them to be mislabeled. Sure enough, they ate plants... After doing some more reading, it seems mystery snails are a type of apple snail so I suppose it's possible the snails available locally are a slightly different variety.
I was completely sold on nerite until I heard about them getting out of the tank. That's no bueno. I don't want slimy gross snails lurking around my room.

So cool that you two are working together!
Thanks Archer! Yes, it's been a really good thing for both of us.

Agreed. We found that with healthy and stable parameters, they don't lay eggs. If parameter get out of wack then they will lay
I hate the white leathery eggs

i just googled the snail, ive never heard of them but they do look pretty cool and unique! they look HUGE too, kinda like a clam with a snail foot
@@lacrosseguy108 they are not huge. Maybe a little bit bigger then a quarter. A full inch in diameter for sure.

Another great Video! 😊
Thanks Joe :)
So if you are starting out with snails, how many should one get for a 75 gal? Say if one wanted both the Mystery and Nerite.
Great info! Cat food?? 🤔 I rewound 3 times as I thought I had a stroke and was not hearing correctly 🤣 Dry? Wet? Favorite flavors? Thank you!!
Can you keep both of these snails in the same tank?
yesssssssss new videos
Trying to keep up with an upload every Tuesday:)
INMATE RUNNING AWAY AT THE 6:09 MARK, close to his left knee by the bottom shelf.
Hahaha jail break!
I have two nerite snails with a topless tank. Never had a problem
That's super impressive! They must love their home :)
from my experience mystery snails can and will eat plants if not well fed. if they are well fed they dont tend to devour plants
I wish I could have snails again, but I have five clown loaches, so they would hunt them down!
Oh they would definitely eat them haha maybe a large mystery snail they would leave alone though. Never tried it before!
Ramhorn pest snail small eat plants in my experience!

Mystery snails eat plants. Bacopa compacta is one example they love to eat
Mime ate duckweed left everything else alone.

Lmao, raw
