In this video, I demonstrate a cool bass riff using the Em scale.
A common question from beginner bassists is, "I know the scale from instructional books, but I don't know what to play with it." To answer this question, I have created a content that showcases a bass riff using the Em scale, employing both fingerpicking and slap bass techniques.
Practicing the same phrase with different techniques is the most efficient way to improve your skills, as it provides multiple benefits.
Fingerstyle
The BPM is slowed down.
Bass EX 01: Practice the Em scale.
Bass EX 02: Add ghost notes on the offbeat eighth notes within the Em scale.
Bass EX 03: Add ghost notes on the 16th notes within the Em scale.
Bass EX 04: Play a bass riff using the Em scale. After getting comfortable with the scale through basic exercises, visualize the scale while playing the bass riff.
Bass EX 05: Combine the techniques practiced in EX 01-04 into a phrase. This is the bass riff from "Roundabout" by Yes.
Slap Bass
Play the same phrases practiced in fingerstyle using slap bass technique.
