MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:
1.) Grace Wales Bonner (Wales Bonner)
2.) Kanye West (Yeezy)
3.) Martine Rose
4.) Virgil Abloh (Off White / Louis Vuitton)
5.) Samuel Ross (Oakley / A-Cold-Wall* / Polythene Optics)
6.) Kerby Jean-Raymond (Pyer Moss)
7.) Shayne Oliver (Helmut Lang / Hood By Air)
Hamid Holloman, A Sauvage, Ikire Jones and Zam Barrett are also great Black designers. In fact, I think youd really like Zam's stuff.
Funny enough I love Zam’s stuff but I haven’t heard of the other designers. Definitely going to look into them
Definitely don't miss Rushemy Botter! He's a Dutch-Caribbean designer who is currently one half of the creative team at Nina Ricci.
So glad Grace was on this list, she's awesome and deserves more attention.
Grace is amazing
Wales Bonner is fantastic, every season. Telfar is also worth looking into.
Love wales bonner. Never heard of telfar before but just checked it out now, the stuff is really good.
@@FashionRoadman Hey...could you check out FeliciChi? She's another black American designer! Tell me what you think! 😀
this is one of my favorite videos of your channel ! the format is not too long, synthetic and yet really informative :) Keep up the good work
also nice prada bob
Thank you very much I appreciate it. Haha love my Prada hat 🎩
i like how you styled the hat with making the logo discreet. It made me realize how nice the material is before realizing it was prada.
I think the flack that people give Virgil comes from the fact that he worked with Kanye and because of the PYREX stuff. Being that he was selling Champion Tees & Hoodies for $120-$300 And screen printed on RL Flannels for $500 & also because of the Been Trill stuff. But in my opinion he used the people around him (Kanye) to get to where he is now and also the capital from Pyrex & Been Trill. I certainly don’t agree with everything he does in terms of fashion with being a lover of fashion and style and being from Chicago myself. The LV appointment was something huge for people of color and it opened up possibilities for other black and brown people to get a chance to be seen on a greater scale.
In the eyes of a lot of people he’s not considered “black”
he’s not a designer. Period. He’s only successfully marketed himself as one.
Even if you don’t like him Jerry was doing FOG for a minute too. Idk people like Jerry and Virgil just seem like opportunists than some of the other designers. Like FFS Jerry was a socialite before he decided to be a designer.
And you forgot Boateng at Givenchy from 2004 to 2007
Berlin Gray He is “BLACK”
You fr just put me onto Wales Bonner, love the designs 🙏🏻
She’s so good, when you have time you should really look into her
There was a famous designer who died, and I cannot remember his name, just his look. Iris, who died at 102, reminded me of him. I meet designers frequently, mostly using black and white graphics.
Also historically Patrick Kelly is pretty dope, too! His designs would be pretty poppin in 2019 I think
Patrick Kelly is a legend in the game 🔥🔥
Historically Xuly Bet paved the way in Paris for not only black designers, buy upcycling going back to the early 90s
Oh wow ... HBA ... That yellow double front boot ... Stuck in my head till I die.
Nice however you should definitely add more images showcasing the looks that these great designers want us to see. Keep it up though!
I’ll definitely try to implement this in part 2
i'd love more on this subject please, all you have suggested to do next.
Dope, you should look into pryia ahluwalia, Saul Nash, mowalola, nicholas daley (black designers)
Great list, haven’t heard of 2 of them so definitely going to check their stuff out. I remember seeing priya on i-D talking about sustainability and her clothing aesthetic. I don’t know why I had it in my head that she was fully Indian 😂 I think it was her name haha. A lot of my Indian friends have the same surname and others the same first name. Just checked and it says she’s half Indian half Nigerian.
Thank you so much for this list! I knew a lot of them already but some I did not! :)
No problem, I’m here to educate the people ❤️
Your amazing!! Had to subscribe ❤
NYFW has Telfar, Laquan Smith, Brandon Maxwell, Christian Siriano, Marc Jacobs, The Row, Prabal Gurung, Ekhaus Latta, Tom Ford and many more. Don’t sleep on this city fam!
I’m not sleeping on NYFW at all haha. It’s just that compared to Paris, Milan and London it’s a no contest
The 🎩. IS LIFE.
Thanks for sharing! Hopefully soon I can join this awesome group
Keep grinding and I’m sure you will
just another black designer for the list, Abdul Abasi from Abasi Rosborough, one of the my favorite designers right now
This is cool... but another unknown designer is FeliciChi😍 her clothes are awesome, couture and fairly priced!!!
Waiting for part two :)
Coming soon to a screen near you
Thank you that, from your videos i can learn, to my fashion history exams ;) i love your passion 💖
Glad you feel that way
Thanks for this man. Solid information.
🙏🏿
Bianca Saunders is someone you should check out, Nicholas Daley is another one that comes to mind!
I love Bianca Saunders I think her stuff is amazing. As for Nicholas Daley I definitely need to look into him. A lot of people have recommended him
Don't forget Olubiyi Thomas, Nicholas Daley, Monad London and Bianca Saunders!
Some of them are in the next video for sure!!!
I really like your hat....it looks so cool
Merci ❤️
Tbh I dnt think Virgil is all that good but Off white has gotten way better
Grace Wales Bonner is amazing that India inspired collection she did this year is INCREDIBLE I wish it was within my price range hoping some stuff hits sales lol
I like ACW and I dont care about "aesthetic" but its very kinda specific to like the futuristic roadman thing
I love ACW, it fits right in with the Roadman aesthetic I like to push haha.
Wales Bonner is so nice but her stuff is very pricey unfortunately
@@FashionRoadman you know its funny the whole body bag tracksuit stuff I would ask my UK cousins abt where to get those clothes in London when I was visiting in the early 2000's and they would say "ew thats out of style chav stuff" and now somehow back in style pretty funny
Wonderful video sir! Wish you the best future.
Thanks a lot
Thank you for making this!
I really needed this info. Thank you
but you CANNOT forget Duro Olowu
Thank you for this video : )
No problem
I fuck with a cold wall
Great content, but I think Olivier Rousteing should also be on the list.
They always say Virgil is the first "African American" at a Paris house, because they don't mention the French like Olivier, kind of bothers me because the Anglo-Saxon world seems to overlook the work of black french designers
Oswald Boateng(Givenchy) Mr Black Saville Row,#DavidTlale(South African)
YOU TALKED BOUT YEEZY MY GUYY
It had to be done
I dig the gatman fit
Hahaha jokeman 😂😂😂
thanks i appreciate this video soo much !
I live in NE and need warm clothes
Oh yeah, romeo hunte and telfar!
Gonna check them out too
This video is amazing
You have beautiful eye's 😍😍
Thanks ❤️
If you could find the time and desire to include Patricia Mbela and John Kaveke, that would be cool. This was an informative video (per usual). The only one I disagree with is Yeezy; Kanye West's music is fantastic in so many ways, but my personal opinion is that his fashion line is just boring and overpriced. I haven't seen a single piece that made me think I had to have it, or be inspired by it. I don't know if military surplus stores are a thing in the UK, but I feel like I could take any Yeezy fan thrifting in my corner of the world and build them a similar look that is so much better and ridiculously inexpensive in comparison. Virgil gives me conflicted feelings as well, but his clothes hold more appeal for me. I'm gong to check out all of the rest of these designers though, their clothes look amazing.
Thanks so much for watching I really appreciate it ❤️
I can see where you’re coming from when talking about the Yeezy clothes but when it comes to the footwear like I said they’re very unique, good quality and very stylish especially the crepe boots, military boots and combat boots. Virgil also has made amazing pieces he’s just extremely inconsistent. You should definitely check out the other designers they’re amazing.
A cold wall and balmain,
Telfar Clemens
A lot of people have said Telfar so I’ll definitely get that made soon
Thank you,
No problem - others to check out - Laquan Smith, Ozwald Boateng, Telfar
Chino Amobi, too.
Thanks for this video .. all I knew about was yeezys and off white 🤦🏾♂️
That’s why I’m here haha
@@FashionRoadman lol
Awesome video as always =) Another black designer you should check out is Bianca Saunders, she's based in London.
Thanks a lot, definitely going to check her out for the next video ❤️
Can we just replace Kanye West with Laquan Smith.... Cause...... One lives through the work of design and the other curates it...
Of course we are intellectual, we are human life.
What is the name of the designer you mentioned at 8:41?
I dont know how Virgil got that position, lacking creativity and pure luxury, it seems luxury brands now prefer to put someone in with a name like a celebrity instead of hiring someone with vision extreme creative talent.
Thank you but where is their address?
im up next
✊🏾🖤🖤🖤
Hi! It's a pleasure to be here in your place! Wish you the best! Be welcome to my Spanish Tribe!+-*¡¡
You forgot balmain
Is Kanye a designer though 🤔
No jerry lorenzo ?
Don’t worry there are more parts coming like I said at the end of the video I left out people like Oswald Boateng for part 2
@@FashionRoadman I design furniture and other stuff
It's great that you're talking about black fashion designers!
But i must say that when people say "we have to support black owned business or black designers", it's generally American people who IMO always see things in their own way. I don't think they care about black designers more than they care about Black Americans designers...
Because, there are actually a lot of respected, successful black designers working today and who doesn't need to have the validation of big houses to exist.
WGB is a great designer! She has the talent, the skills and the imagination but i think that sometimes the story telling of her clothes is quite disconnected to the clothes. I love the shows, the cast and everything but sometimes i think her clothes needs more identity when removed from the runway.
Kanye West is a tricky one. He is influential because of who he is...Not because of what he does.
He gets a bad rep because his stuff is mostly copies of 90's Helmut Lang, early 00's Raf and some Margiela. That's the problem with big stars like him. It's not talent but he is someone who is in tune with the society and it works for him but for me, he is not really a designer.
I'm not a big fan of Abloh because he is not a designer. I respect the hustle because it's always great to have people like him opening doors (Even if Ozwald Boateng at Givenchy and Patrick Robinson at Paco Rabanne opened those doors for him too) But i have too much respect for fashion and for designers who are working their ass off around the world, and some of them are in this list you made, to call him a designer. He is a DJ, he is doing collabs, he is at Coachella...Does he care about the craft, the way his clothes are made? Does he spend time in the studio? He has two collections to prepare for June...
And Rei Kawakubo might not have studied "fashion" but she learned her craft. There's no designer, real designer who didn't learned to master his craft. It's good to copy Raf Simons but if you don't know how to construct those clothes, it will only look like an expensive Knockoff...Generally badly fitted.
I have to admit that while i like Samuel Ross, Martine Rose and all, for me, Kerby Jean Raymond is the real next big star!
He is very talented, quite gifted and he is good both at menswear & womenswear and has quite an originality in his designs. It's political but it's also quite joyful and glamorous....
Virgil even copied him.
He has the support of American Vogue but he should stay independent for a moment IMO.
I also love Laquan Smith. It's very IG girls as an aesthetic but he has the potential to be great.
It's a pity that Calvin Klein closed it High Fashion line because it could have been an opportunity to collaborate with some of those young talents. Kerby could have done something fabulous with them.
Kerby Jean Raymond is an amazing designer I have to agree.
The problem with RUclips as a platform is that I wanted my RUclips channel to be about the serious side of fashion but at the same time I can’t make videos that are too long or I’ll lose peoples attention. This means I have to break videos up, so this video was meant to be the more mainstream one kind of the one that draws people in. Hence why I mentioned some mediocre designers such as Virgil Abloh & Kanye West. There are many more videos on black designers to come.
I’ve started to understand that you have to throw people bait on this platform and use the bait to catch the fish. My whole mission (maybe mission isn’t the best word) is to explain fashion to the average person who doesn’t have a clue so I try not to get too technical. I think fashion is on a huge decline with all these influencers pushing all this gimmicky stuff without any narrative and for no other reason other than “because it’s popular.” The more people I can get to learn about different designers, brands etc. The more people will move away from just buying it and wearing certain things because they’re popular and more people will find their own styles.
As for GWB, I think you kinda downplayed her skill. I think she’s an extremely intellectual designer and the way she translates her stories into her clothes are captivating in my opinion. However, her journey is still in the extremely early stages and she has a log way to go. I feel like 5-10 years from now she will really be up there
@@FashionRoadmanGot it!
I can’t understand why colour is so important???
fashion is heavily influenced by black culture despite the fact that there is a major shortage of black people within the industry, even when those in the industry pretend to care about black people using words like "diversity" and "inclusivity" many of them tokenize black people
INSERT NAME HERE race (although there are no races, really) has nothing to do with culture.
Maybe I’ll have to make a video about it because it’s so deep and it’s actually going to take me forever to type a response to this question haha.
In summary, colour is so important because certain shades of human beings have been seen as less than, inferior etc. Due to this , people still subconsciously have certain biases in their day to day life which affects certain demographics. That’s why black people feel the need to support “their own” a lot because in the West people will discredit you from the get go just based on your skin colour. It’s really deep to get into because it’s one of those things that’s really hard to see unless you experience every single day. I personally never victimise myself, let it affect me or care to much about it but it does exist and a lot of people behave as if it’s some imaginary thing in our head.
Essentially my point is, if everyone was viewed the same then colour wouldn’t be important at all.
The Fashion Archive I see where you are coming from and racism obviously still exists in the West, although not system based. I see these kind of videos and narratives leading us towards more separation and polarisation in society. The far right white suprematist portray black people inferior to whites which in turn separates us from one another, implying that identity lies in your complexion. In the same way, the identity left (call it what you want) separate different ethnicities,as if identity lies in your complexion. And since racism is not system based anymore it’s actually harmful to the anti-racism agenda we should be pushing in the West. Racial identity can’t be the final goal (but obviously useful under for example slavery)
Oh yeah I fully agree with you and you made excellent points. My hope is that we get to a point where we view people as just humans regardless of skin colour or “features.” And we judged everyone individually and on a case by case basis. I’m really really really against identity politics because I think it does more harm than good. That’s why I never victimise myself and when I explain stuff about race I try to look at it from the perspective of the unconscious biases people have rather than what some people I disagree with say where they say “the system is against us” or “the system is the problem.”
This series of videos is also very easy to make as there aren’t that many mainstream black fashion designers. Imagine I made a series on white designers 😂😂😂. The series wouldn’t end. Would have to make 5000 videos
there are only 5 designers in this list
virgil and kanye are not designers lol
Looooool you’re a joker. They’re designers by definition just not exceptional ones, but they’re better than a lot of designers let me not even lie. I’d wear Yeezy and Off-White anyday over D&G and Phillip Plein
Taxi collection is not cute the dhl is
Shane only designed the Spring Summer 2018 show. Please do not put the rest of that trash Helmut Lang is producing on him 😂
Hahahaha true true
I would not support Kanye or a British brat. Black only please! No half’s!!!!!
Karen Shelton Virgil not even British 😂
Why tf would you be caring more or less about a desiger because of the skin colour?!
imagine some shit like "I only support white designers" wtf
Once again, don’t know what you’re talking about mate. I highlight designers of other races just as much. Craig Green, Ann Demeulemeester, Kansai Yamamoto etc all have dedicated videos.
Maybe do some research before you judge someone’s character
