I would add the one caveat that for anyone with young kids (like, sub-11 years) I wouldn't call it appropriate. This movie is not at all like the first two guardians movies in regard to its tone. It really pushes that pg-13 and I honestly think it should have gone up a rating. I absolutely adored my time watching the movie, but it's certainly not one for the youngins. ***spoiler warning (though kept vague, and is mostly a content warning)*** This movie explores Rocket's origins in a very graphic and emotional way. 30:03 The reason why Professor Hulk was introduced at the beginning of Endgame and not the end of Infinity War was because it seemed like too much of a win at the end of a movie where the good guys lose.
30:28 the reason they cut that scene was because the director felt it was too much of a victory for banner, and that it might lessen the impact of the ending.
I think it would be interesting if Peter would lern about the counter parts of the villains he met. I mean his Octavio or his goblin. It also would be interesting to see how he would be trying to stop them from becoming villains
Kinda upset that Wakanda Forever (which was mid-tier in my opinion) got ranked lower than Multiverse of Madness, Quantumania and Love and Thunder 😭 I feel like while it had its problems, it still outdid all of the worst stinkers of the recent phases
if you go back and watch.. step back and look at it from their pov and its very accurate.. take away your feelings to 'tchalla'.. and the movie is just bad..
Their conversation about Black Panther makes me think they didn't watch the movie. What do you mean Namor just wanted to be left alone? Namor wanted to strike first before the world had a chance to do so. He was the opposite of what they're saying.
That was only after he was messed with. Originally. He just wanted to be left alone, but outside forces didn’t allow that so he wanted to eliminate those outside forces.
The deleted scene with professor hulk was cut because it would have felt like a win in a movie that had beaten the hope out of the Avengers. Avengers Endgame had 1 one goal and that was to wrap up the Infinity saga
I think I watched a different Wakanda Forever than they did. I don't remember Namor preaching isolationism or the Wakandans being upset by that. I remember Namor demanding the assassination of a teenage girl before telling the Wakandan princess that he wanted to wage war on the surface, and that Wakanda could either be join him or become his first target. I don't disagree that it wasn't a good movie, but we seem to remember the arcs differently. Namor was not a very coherent/consistent villain.
I also think there may be a tad bit of ethnocentrism going on. I always respect Mat's point of view, but I think they missed the forest from the trees here.
Yeah that confused me too bcs, although I also didn't care much for the movie, this idea of Namor "trying to be isolationist WITH Wakanda" is NOT what I recall from the movie, back when I watched.... LIke yes they wanted to stay hidden and that's why they were after the scientist, but it was literally established in the last movie that they wanted to avoid war and keep themselves hidden... Ofc they would refuse.
I'll be honest, I watched it twice and didn't get that. It's a mess of a movie and I got nothing from it but confusion. Thinking about it now that you put the idea in my mind: I can see remaining hopeful despite things not going your way, yes, but grateful specifically? Stephen isn't grateful about his life, watching Christine be happy with someone else and Wong be Sorcerer Supreme. Accepting? Willing to move on with his life? Yes, but he isn't glad for it. Same with America and her loss. Wanda is the contrast with someone who just can't let things go or accept that she can't have what she wants.
@@sofiadragon6520 I think the reason I use the word grateful is because it’s the word Wong uses when Stephen asks him if he is happy. The point of the movie is that Stephen needs to learn to be happy and grateful with the things in his life that DO make it worth living and not to hold onto the things that don’t.
@@sofiadragon6520 and also I think that acceptance of the things that make life difficult (or things you can’t change) is the first step into being grateful for the things in life that you can and already have
Listening to MatPat talk about Endgame physically hurts me. It wasn't MEANT for lay people. The narrative IS "the culmination of 10 years of storytelling." It was meant for the fans that had been there since 2008. I get the argument for every movie except that one because that one movie is not supposed to be a self-contained story.
agreed. Endgame was not meant for the people that skipped half the movies to go watch it their friends. It can happily become something for them should they decide to embrace the whole MCU, but its not meant to be a casual watch.
It’s still not a great movie with all the context. I thought Infinity War was a much better film. Endgame felt like fanservice with a plot tacked on. I enjoyed the fanservice, but as a movie or story it’s not that good. I’ve been watching every MCU since 2008 and I just don’t think Endgame is the greatest thing ever. At best it goes into A, but I would argue a low B or high C for it realistically.

I think what you said about Shuri not having earned the Black Panther suit was part of the point. She initially donned the suit not because it was earned but because its power was necessary to wage war/take revenge. She only took a step toward earning it when her motives changed (and hopefully she'll continue working to earn it in future movies, if Marvel finds time to dedicate to that.)
I think they were spot on in their assessment of Wakanda Forever suffering from having to set up too many things. The whole Agent Ross and Ironheart plotlibes werent really necessary. I would've much rather seen Shuri dealing with her grief, making mistakes and learning from them, and then becoming worthy of the suit. They should've introduced Namor in a different movie and let Shuri have her own origin story
Ok, so, yes, i get it, people weren’t into Captain Marvel, and that’s totally, fine, but I do think the point Lee brings up is an important one. 17 year old girl here, i was freaking empowered by that movie. Just a woman being awesome and cool kicking the crap out of bad guys. Idk, i just really appreciated the effort extended by Marvel. Anyway. Love your channel! :) all opinions (as long as they aren’t hurting anyone) are valid! Yayyayayay
I gotta admit.... I clicked on this & immediately skipped to the end to see what the rankings were... 😂 cause after last time having to hear you guys absolutely DRAG one of my favorite things Marvel has done. I was nervous about this one. But surprisingly, I largely agree with your ranking! The few I don't I would only move up by a single tier so I almost completely agree. So... imma go back & actually watch the video now. 😂😂😂
I miss how Marvel used to take a character, and SHOW how they came to be, not in how they became powerful, but how they came to be the PEOPLE they were. With Steve, he was sick and watching everyone including their BEST and ONLY real friend going to war, fighting, and being considered as strong and capable. So he used that, and his stubbornness to become a soldier. After the serum, he realized things. Seeing how everyone wanted to use him, while still being in battles and seeing all the casulties, the ruined lives etc. It fueled him, even later, to stick for the average, every day person. He lpved America, not the American military. On the other side, youve got Tony, who was raised as a selfish, but intelligent asshole. He saw how much damage his weapoms could create, and used his wealth to fight back. Even still, he kept making missteps, and when he saw how much even his good-intentioned tech was used as weapons, proving to him that no one should have that kind of power without oversight. And thats a very basic rundown of how they got to the Civil War. It's more nuanced, obv but i cant get into ALL of those in one comment. It seems that Marvel is taking so much energy to replicate Infinity War/Endgame, thay they have forgotten how they got there in the first place. I hope we go back to more character based stories and stop forcing unearned lore down our throats.
YES YES YES i feel like they’re SO busy pushing the higher plot with the multiverse and all that the characters are just mere props at this point. which could be interesting in a meta way i guess like oh we're all just pieces in a game or whatever but idc- i fell in love with marvel and the mcu for the characters and their strengths and weaknesses and stories and the depth there was to it and them but recently it felt too shallow and way too… ambitious? like they want too much, they’re trying too hard. out of all the post endgame releases shang chi was by far my favorite because it was basically just a superhero movie about a guy and his little story in his little corner of the universe, feeling very back to the basics/roots to me.
There are still character based stories though in fact most of the shows and movies are about characters and their journeys as people. Not to mention let's not act like every character pre-infinity war/endgame were handled as well or as nuanced as steve and tony, because the vast majority wasn't. You cherry-picking the 2 best developed characters who have had their arcs finished is just disingenuous.
To put it simply: The LOOOOOORE makes the characters, but the characters are actually making the plot move. Once you have your setting you need to let your characters behave how they should, not to facilitate the plot. If you want a certain plot then try to use the characters that would lead you there (or come up with a reason that they would do it organicaly, not force them to do it because the plot demands).
Moon Knight, Yelena Belova, Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Shang-Chi, Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, and She-Hulk (not saying you SHOULD like her btw) would like a word with you
@@kendrick5501 Moon Knight is Lore over character (they should have leaned into DID more and less into the Egyptian stuff), Yelena should have appeared between Infinity War and Endgame (and the movie should have been completely different in terms of plot), Ms Marvel is just a mess, Shang-Chi is boring (especially since they gave us another let down of a Mandarin, even more of a letdown than the fake one in my opinion), Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing didn't get enough time for their story to be presented (in my opinion) and She-Hulk is just horrible and cringy in every way because they hired a bunch of women who admitted to knowing nothing about law (they could have at least hired a lawyer, even a woman lawyer for more realism, in order to make it work, but they didn't).
I agree with a lot of mats points about endgame but the killing Thanos one feels like such a miss, the entire point of the end of infinity war was he WON. There was no “beating him” at that point the dude completed his goal. That’s why killing him is also so powerful, there’s literally no point to it it’s not gonna fix anything. The characters and especially Thor are so broken from what happened they kill him anyway. Maybe they could’ve found a different way to do the climax without just bringing back a past thanos again but I don’t think keeping present Thanos alive would’ve been any better.
I actually loved the Eternals. It was not really a Marvel movie, but I really liked the story and the world and the characters. I guess I really like movies that people find really boring.
I like the story it tried to tell, but I don't think it did it well. I think the movie needed to be longer or they needed to stick closer to the source material. I also feel like they should of got gaiman to write it, he wrote the Best eternals comics and even if you discount that he just writes god pantheons better than anyone and you can't tell marvel or Disney couldn't drive a dump truck full of money to his house and pay him.
I'm with you. It was a top tier movie for sure. Its story was more driven by philosophy and the characters' individual morals than by overarching villains, which I guess isn't what people want from their superhero films, but I always appreciated more cerebral takes on any genre.
Nah I love eternals, probably my favorite marvel movie, but I can accept the movie is not good. A lot of the story is so bland with so many unnecessary plot points it's laughable. Like do you even know the name of the main deviant? The worst part is how much potential it had as a high budget show with all the right components. If they had more time to develop the characters and the whole eternals concept this could've easily been one of the best marvel projects. Wasted phase 4 potential
@@origon4477 Hard disagree. If it was a show, people would be complaining that nothing ever happened. And his name was Kro. Hardly an unnecessary plotline as it's the main thing drawing them together.
I'll never understand why so many people hate the third act of Shang Chi. I thought it was the strongest part of the movie. Also has one of my favorite fights Marvel has ever done. The characters were on point too. If we're going to have a giant cgi battle, this is what I want lmao. Shang Chi running on the back of a dragon and pinning it down with his rings in the coolest way possible.
Personally, what I think makes the third act of Shang Chi so weak would be the fact that the Mandarin, a powerful and evil villain, is motivated and essentially controlled by another entity, which is, in terms of character, another cop out. We also have to consider that Marvel has had a ton of CGI fights, so people aren't as wowed about that anymore.
It's because everything once they get to the village was almost criminally boring. There was a point where I almost considered leaving because I was so bored.
I love how sometimes I think that the theorist team are like the all knowing loremasters who know every single detail of these movies but then they are moments like 48:52 which make me laugh
23:30 He's got a point, friends of mine who hardly watched any of the marvel movies were surprisingly able to enjoy infinity wars. End game not as much...
i really dont like the "villain who makes a good point but has to still be a villain" trope, it feels like the writers wrote themselves into a corner making the bad guy too likeable and relatable, so they need to give them some horrible, genocidal trait to make them irredeemable
My tier list looks almost nothing like this list. But I think that's one of the best things about the MCU, different movies are going to appeal to different fans for different reasons, we each have our own reasons to dislike some of the better movies or to forgive some of the sins of the worst movies. That's pretty cool in my book. One thing I want to mention as something that I wish we had seen from Spider Man No Way Home or hopefully might get from a future movie (perhaps Secret Wars): Joe Manganiello reprising his role as Flash Thompson, but more specifically as the Agent Venom of his universe (the Tobey Maguire Spiderman). I think it'd be awesome to see Agent Venom juxtaposed against Tom Hardy's Venom, I think Joe is a phenomenal actor and deserves to be in the MCU, and unfortunately I think Agent Venom is too interesting and important to be left in the hands of Tony Revolori.
Personally don’t agree with the list but u have to say your reviews and quick comments on the movies are so interesting… I think you should do more of these❤
My sister and I had a huge discussion about Captian Marvel. She works in an industry that's still very misogynistic and she has had to go through a lot of those problems that faced Captain Marvel. She felt that it was unnecessary and not an escape from real life and she was sick of movies that were made solely to prove that point. I then pointed out that it wasn't meant for her. We let my four year old watch it at home and her face lit up. She looked up to Marvel so much and dressed like her at Disneyland and was first in line to meet her. It highly impacted my daughter in a way that I never could have imagined because she needed that visual representation of strength. She had to go into surgery the following year and we got her these charms that looked like Captain Marvel's symbol and she loved it. She's moved on now to other movies but at a moment in her life, that movie spoke to her. If Marvel can make room for kids and young girls by creating a character that speaks to them about strength that is able to speak to those that need to hear it, then it's one of the best ones they've put out in my opinion.
THANK YOU oh my god- I hate seeing people disregard this entire side of the film. I understand that it's not everyones cup of tea, but so many people needed to see something like it in a genre that lacks that sort of female representation so heavily. I feel the same about their opinion on wakanda forever too, like even if you think shuri 'didn't earn it', which is a whole other thing, people needed to see a film where a black girl was the strong superhero lead,u know?
@A B S O L U T E L Y C A T A S T R O P H I C yeah, I get it. I think people in general are moving to a place where if it doesn't fulfill their expectations that they think it's not good. It goes toward everything but film is definitely where I think we see it most.
I have to second Mat on his Endgame rating. As someone who hadn’t seen many Marvel movies before Infinity War, when Endgame came out it was hard for me to pay attention to it with all the callbacks and convenient plot devices (I ended up reading a book for the entire movie). Many years (and lots of catching up on the timeline) later I understand and like it more but it’s still a weaker movie than Infinity War.
@@anissagriffith2659 it's not that deep. Not everyone had to enjoy the movie and they're right that it wasn't as good as its first part. It had plenty of narrative problems to criticize.

I feel like the problem with endgame was Thanos destroying the stones. I don't think they should be able to destroy them. It would've been better for me if the kept the stones, Thanos scattered them, and they had an extra movie to recover from the damages caused from the decimation
infinity war and endgame were my real introductions into marvel, I've always been a casual watcher up until then, and I don't entirely think the references make or break endgame. I understood both movies really well, but I also get not feeling the same way about those notes
I'm also hoping James Gunn can crack the code on the superhero movie being a character trait instead of a genre. There's a reason the Marvel Method is a thing
1:07:22 When Okoye starts berating the Midnight Angel design it isn't a joke about the suits actual design quality, it's Okoye disliking the tech taking over from tradition. The audience is supposed to think the suit is cool. I for one do. However the use of it being a nanotech helmet and an Iron Man HUD interior wasn't good in execution at all
I really enjoyed Shang Chi, but just like with so many other of the movies, they did a Marvel. I really thought that him and his sister were going to and should have shared the rings and fought that way, because that would be awesome. It was so stupid that they just made her a villain for no reason whatsoever, when she spend the rest of the movie redeeming her criminal behavior to become a hero.
@@redroman4214 I was mostly just saying that because she decided to help save the world and become a hero (kind of). It's about as redeemed as you can get in a Marvel movie where they are literally praising criminal activity.
@@Sock-Monster-Simian her becoming a villain was because she didn't get closure from her father. Only Shang Chi had closure with the drama with their father. She was still ignored by Wenwu and now that he is dead, she never will get closure. Her whole point was that she did everything on her own and was proud of that fact since Shang Chi left her and their father ignored her all her life.
Small bit on the venom glob left in the mcu: knowing that venom has had many hosts, I've wondered some things. the one I find mostly feasible is how venom wanted to talk to spiderman and, despite the memory wipe of people being able to connect peter to spiderman, flash Thompson had been shown throughout the movies to have a fascination with spidey. With Flash Thompson also being one of venom's hosts in the comics, I think a future movie could very well make that connection for this iteration to still give more of a venom crossover without having to wrangle tom hardy or Sony into a whole movie
In my mind Endgame is easily S-tier, at least you put Winter Soldier in S 😂 In all seriousness though great ranking, loved hearing both of your thoughts about all the movies in my favorite franchise!
No lie the best part of end game is ENDGAME the rest was dragging to that moment, like the end 10/10 perfection, before that 7.5 at best and thats being generous.
Know what kind of movie I want to see. I want to see what if Superman landed on earth during medieval times. Like imagine a lord of the rings kind of battle and a flying man with lazar eyes erupts on the battle field slaying thousands. Imagine he fights for his kingdom which eventually betrays him so he takes revenge and crowns himself king. This would be an epic movie. It would also be cool if DC started doing more movies like this, such as putting their characters into different scenarios and eras. Like a Batman in a 1920's London, or green arrow during ancient Japan, or a story of a young Bruce wane during the renaissance facing against a psychotic Villian who he discovers is the king's jester, (aka the joker) I think this would be so much better then modern super heroes.
The witty banter was supposed to be asking what’s hype in marvel right now and they had so little to compliment they ended up talking about dc for half of it 🤣

28:58 I know people who went to endgame without having seen any previous marvel movies and they said they didn't really get it or understand the characters. It definitely isn't enough in the public consciousness for it to be understood without watching the other movies or at least being very familiar with the comics. But here's a tip, don't need to do the 2nd timestamp, I mean like
Example: you wrote "Shang-Chi - 40:30 - 44:11", could remove the 44:11, coz we can see that from the next line, with "Eternals: 44:10"
Just a tip if you wanna do this again next time, so a little less work

Lets think about this for a second they really put endgame in the same category as captain marvel. COME ON
“An opinion that’s different that mine! Oh no!”
it's not even THAT good tbh. Don't even ask me how or why it's kinda just meh.
@@kayden232ou captain marvel or endgame? I found endgame kinda meh
@@heatherramirez6141 Exactly, I've watched every movie up till then and was so hype because I usually loved most of those movies, till they like throw away every point of the whole story and went omg time travel so there's no point in me watching any of it anymore. I wholeheartedly agree with matpats points, because this is the movie and a few after is when I decided to stop watching them.
Captain marvel is my least favorite pre-endgame movie.
I just want to say how sad Dr. Strange multiverse of madness made me, I was SO excited for it and it genuinely made my day a little worse when I saw it
Same. I went to the drive in with my family and they asked me why I made them watch it. We used to always watch Marvel together 😂😭
Agreed
The thing what ruin the movie is everyone expect too much and the movie could not delivered all our expectations.
@@thenameless7810 I expected a good movie
The way i had the same exact experience. I convinced my entire family to watch this cause i was so excited. I also wished they didn't put Charles in there. He deserved better.
Lees face edited to replace Stephanie’s was to damn good I was laughing to much
I love the energy that bounces off between them both lol
I really like the idea of a shang chi third act where shang fights wen wu, xia Lin leads people to keep the gate intact, and Katie gets her first bullseye on a target.
30:03
The reason why Professor Hulk was introduced at the beginning of Endgame and not the end of Infinity War was because it seemed like too much of a win at the end of a movie where the good guys lose.
It's kind of perfect that the second part of the ranking is released on the same day GotG Volume 3 hits theatres (whether intentional or not).
30:28 the reason they cut that scene was because the director felt it was too much of a victory for banner, and that it might lessen the impact of the ending.
Can we just take a moment for Lee being in the intro that's a clap and a half
I think it would be interesting if Peter would lern about the counter parts of the villains he met. I mean his Octavio or his goblin. It also would be interesting to see how he would be trying to stop them from becoming villains
Kinda upset that Wakanda Forever (which was mid-tier in my opinion) got ranked lower than Multiverse of Madness, Quantumania and Love and Thunder 😭 I feel like while it had its problems, it still outdid all of the worst stinkers of the recent phases
I feel the same way, that ranking made me sad 😭
I agree so much with this.
I agree with mat and lee the plot was alright but the cgi and character arcs weren’t there
@@Ranger_4878 cute 🥰 picture
if you go back and watch.. step back and look at it from their pov and its very accurate.. take away your feelings to 'tchalla'.. and the movie is just bad..
Literally and he wanted to force Wakanda yo join him in WAR and attacked whrm they refused??
Idk you may have forgotten an early scene, happens to me sometimes where I forget something happened a specific way
The one thing I liked from Multiverse of Madness was the moral about remaining grateful even through the things you can’t change
@@sofiadragon6520 and also I think that acceptance of the things that make life difficult (or things you can’t change) is the first step into being grateful for the things in life that you can and already have
@@puyopuyogooey Fair enough.
The movie is mid regardless.

Endgame was 6/10 at best.
I love having Lee on the couch! So knowledgeable and fun! Plus, Lee has great taste in apparel. (N7 sweatshirt is sick!!!)
These two videos going over the Marvel movies was very much appreciated to me, thank you.
Yayyayayay
I love the edits for the intro with Lee's face. They should do that for all GTLive guests. 🤣
What was your favorite lol
@@gapplejuice6012 I’m gonna bet it was Age of Ultron. I rather enjoyed it and wouldn’t put it as low as E tier lol
Putting effort into editing Lee’s face onto Stephanie tells me they can change the intro. The fact they won’t is great
I miss how Marvel used to take a character, and SHOW how they came to be, not in how they became powerful, but how they came to be the PEOPLE they were.
YES YES YES
i feel like they’re SO busy pushing the higher plot with the multiverse and all that the characters are just mere props at this point. which could be interesting in a meta way i guess like oh we're all just pieces in a game or whatever but idc- i fell in love with marvel and the mcu for the characters and their strengths and weaknesses and stories and the depth there was to it and them but recently it felt too shallow and way too… ambitious? like they want too much, they’re trying too hard. out of all the post endgame releases shang chi was by far my favorite because it was basically just a superhero movie about a guy and his little story in his little corner of the universe, feeling very back to the basics/roots to me.
To put it simply:
The LOOOOOORE makes the characters, but the characters are actually making the plot move.
I wish you could've included the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie!! That thing made me cry twice.
@@darkmyro wdym longer? It was already 2hr 40 mins 😂
That’s the problem “IF we’re going to have a cgi fight” - But no one wants a cgi fight.
I now want to watch the whole MCU with Lee and discuss each movie! 🤣
@A B S O L U T E L Y C A T A S T R O P H I C yeah, I get it.
I think people in general are moving to a place where if it doesn't fulfill their expectations that they think it's not good. It goes toward everything but film is definitely where I think we see it most.

I really enjoyed Shang Chi, but just like with so many other of the movies, they did a Marvel.
I really thought that him and his sister were going to and should have shared the rings and fought that way, because that would be awesome. It was so stupid that they just made her a villain for no reason whatsoever, when she spend the rest of the movie redeeming her criminal behavior to become a hero.
when did she redeem her criminal behavior in the movie? I only remember her and Shang Chi making some sort of amends with each other.
@@redroman4214 I was mostly just saying that because she decided to help save the world and become a hero (kind of). It's about as redeemed as you can get in a Marvel movie where they are literally praising criminal activity.

Love that nando v movies got a shoutout
Small bit on the venom glob left in the mcu: knowing that venom has had many hosts, I've wondered some things. the one I find mostly feasible is how venom wanted to talk to spiderman and, despite the memory wipe of people being able to connect peter to spiderman, flash Thompson had been shown throughout the movies to have a fascination with spidey. With Flash Thompson also being one of venom's hosts in the comics, I think a future movie could very well make that connection for this iteration to still give more of a venom crossover without having to wrangle tom hardy or Sony into a whole movie
Woah is that a game theory shirt Matt is wearing? That’s one of the coolest shirts I’ve ever seen 🤯
So, matpat's main argument for Spiderman 3 be good is the same he criticized on endgame ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also jon watts didn't do anything in terms of directing or cinematography ' it's Insanity to put no way home in S tier
Mat arguing that Endgame should be a jumping on point for new fans is killing me

28:58 I know people who went to endgame without having seen any previous marvel movies and they said they didn't really get it or understand the characters. It definitely isn't enough in the public consciousness for it to be understood without watching the other movies or at least being very familiar with the comics. @28:55 I agree with Lee. i hadn't watch battle of new york when i watched endgame2. It felt fine with me. At that time, i just take that as they went back in time to get stones during a major event in new york, and has to be careful to minimise effect on the past.
Just wait till Guardians 3 💀 Absolute S Tier
they finally changed the intro, love the new one
