Brother Porter, thank you so much! Several years ago I was called as a Primary President and I told my counselors that we needed to pull back on teaching the children of baptism age that they were going to have their sins washed away. I never felt like this was true doctorine as it went counter to everything the scriptures teach about the innocence of children before the age of accountability. You just validated through the scriptures that my feelings were and are correct.

Bro. Porter, thank you for clarifying this doctrine. I, too have always had a sense of unease about the false doctrine of baptism being considered a"washing" and the one being baptized being presented as the "cleanest" member of the ward, when there were also innocent children present in our ward. I believe in Jesus Christ as our savior, your reiteration of the teachings of the prophets on this matter have helped and strengthened my testimony of this essential doctrine.

Thank you, brother Porter, for explaining clearly that baptism is entering into a covenant to obey Jesus Christ.
Thank you for also explaining that partaking of sacrament is the humbling of oneself to repent and change.
It has always been puzzling to me that the sins of a child are washed from him at baptism. He was sinless before baptism!
The truth is that each person is baptized by immersion, and the old person is buried, whether child or adult and covenants to change and follow Christ.

  • @rican8316
    @rican8316 4 месяца назад +7

I feel it is easier understood in that is a covenant of obedience. To say the child needs baptism for sins is almost equivalent to the practice of baptizing an infant. It is the gate into the kingdom. Thanks Mr Porter And Mr Dave! I also always wondered what Christ meant as to ‘fulfill all righteousness’.

From Elder Renlund in Oct. '23 Conference:
When I was eight years old, I was baptized by my father. Afterward, I held his hand as we were going to cross a busy street. I was not paying attention and stepped from the curb just as a big truck came rumbling by. My father jerked me back, out of the street and onto the curb. Had he not done so, I would have been hit by the truck. Knowing my own mischievous nature, I thought, “Maybe it would have been better for me to be killed by the truck because I’ll never be as clean as I am now right after my baptism.”
As an eight-year-old, I had mistakenly presumed that the water of baptism washed away sins. Not so. In the years since my baptism, I have learned that sins are cleansed by the power of Jesus Christ through His atoning sacrifice as we make and keep the baptismal covenant.10 Then, through the gift of repentance, we can remain clean. I have also learned that the sacrament brings a powerful virtuous cycle into our lives, enabling us to retain a remission of our sins.

  • @rican8316

Another heavy hitter! I was just pondering this as my son is 6 and I’m teaching him of baptism. How can he be baptized for his sins when he is innocent and pure, but I’ve learned for my self baptism is a covenant of obedience like you point out. It is the gate in which we enter to walk in a newness of life or walk after the manner of Christ Jesus and not the flesh.

@@AwakeAndAscend for sure as D&C 68:25 states …that teach them not to *[understand]* the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents.
We are to lead, guide, walk beside. As soon as we became parents we accepted a responsibility of another. Having children is the easy part it is raising them that’s the challenge.
I know for myself I am laying a foundation and helping them recognize the compass within that when away from my presence they may know where they stand and where to go because they have come to the knowledge for themselves.

so glad you did this discussion. I am a temple ordinance worker. I have been deeply interested in the words of the covenant of baptism and also in the words of the temples ordinances. In the baptism prayer we covenant certain things.. and that is very clear. And in the initiatory (in the temple), there are certain words of about being clean that are very different than in baptism. I had always understood that baptism is the gate, that children were clean.. and so were those without the law. Yet we have many things being done and taught that have not meshed for me. I am grateful for your insights. I am very thoughtful as a result. Thank you so much.

Thought it would be good to add that the Presiding Brethren are all over this doctrine. The handbook says regarding bishops interviewing 8 year olds for baptism that "This is not an interview to determine worthiness, since little children need no repentance." Then quotes Moroni. Church culture may have a slight misunderstanding, but we are in good hands from our leaders.

Brother Porter, I have been watching for a new video from you! I love the doctrine of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and you are so careful to get it right. I wish more people watched your videos. (Yes, I have shared some of them.)
I think you have mentioned working with Hugh Nibley. When I entered BYU as a freshman in 1978, the catalogue listed a begiining Book of Mormon class with NIBLEY as the instructor. I immediately signed up. He only taught one session; he said he had to go teach a different class that no one else wanted to teach. But in that one hour, without any notes, he explained how 1 Nephi Chapter 1 was an authentic ancient text.

For starters I am glad you brought up where to get correct information scriptures, teachings of Prophet Joesph Smith and the Prophets whilst they served as leader of the church. Too much opinion surrounds us and then is taught or discussed in class and amongst members leading to confusing and at times members leaving church. I keep thinking of the 4th Article of Faith, repentance (in the case of adult converts joining the church) comes before baptism, which means we desire to change leading to wanting to follow commandments and the saviour. It also should help us have more understanding for those around us who don't have the gospel in their lives, Heavenly Father knows why. His plan is perfect and everyone is given the opportunity to accept or reject it. Just have a true understanding of baptism solidifies the importance of temple baptism. I am grateful that I was taught well by my parents about baptism, the scriptures that discuss how wrong infant baptism is, how children up until the age of 8 are not accountable for mistakes, bad choices etc because they are still learning and don't truly understand right from wrong. Ps I think they might need to go through the primary songbook and hymn book to make sure songs line up with scripture. ❤

I have believed this for so many years - yet - I too was taught and believed that my sins were washed away as an 8 year old AND as one who partakes of the Sacrament (I always knew that I was PROMISING AGAIN to try again and .
Here in this video and through the teachings and testifying of Bro. Porter - I appreciate deeply the scripture references as well as the prophets and apostles TELLING and EXPLANING the purpose of baptism and the COVENANT I make each time I partake of the Sacrament.
Interesting how I could not stop skating around the "truth/untruth" of this covenant until I sat and "SAW/understood" the COVENANT OF BAPTISM AND THE COVENANT OF OBEDIENCE.
I always believed that the Savior was being baptized because He was OBEDIENT IN ALL THINGS to His Father. AND - I always believed that children are NOT SINNERS before they are baptized. I just was not able to put my understanding into an articulate form of truth.
I now "SEE" baptism AND the SACRAMENT much more CLEAR and I now as a grandparent/mother to my little ones and to my adult children not embracing the teachings of the Savior, prophets, and apostles, will be able to testify to THEM of this covenant and the GREAT and MARVELOUS blessings it brings to us EVERY SINGLE DAY in a more articulate and scriptural form!

Wonderful presentation, i was also thinking how you've heard people say "the cleanest member of the ward". I can see several issues with that. For one it compares people.
    Ye shall not esteem one flesh above another, or one man shall not think himself above another;
    Mosiah 23:7
It also, as you pointed out, suggests that baptism is a cleansing, which it isn't, it's a covenant and a willingness to take upon ourselves the name of Christ, and keep his commandments.
I really like how you discussed about partaking of the sacrament worthily and clarified that what makes one worthy, is the willingness to change and reaffirm the covenant. And repentance and change is what works forgiveness through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
Really enjoy your presentations. My favorite part is all the Scripture reference.

Brother Porter I love listening to your comments, I appreciate all that you do to teach the doctrine. I was wondering how you would respond to these two verses in lite of what you have taught here.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
D&C 39:10 But, behold, the days of thy deliverance are come, if thou wilt hearken to my voice, which saith unto thee: Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on my name, and you shall receive my Spirit, and a blessing so great as you never have known.
Both seem to point to baptism as a washing away of sin. I think I know what you might say but I would like to here how you would answer those responses directly.

    • @SladeVance

It seems to be that there is a separation in those sentences, it says be baptized (enter the covenant, and bury the sinful nature) then it continues AND wash away thy sins, implying that the baptism in and of itself does not wash the sins, repentance and change shows our willingness to keep that covenant, the holy Spirit blesses is with strength beyond our own natural capacity, to overcome those sins, through the grace of Jesus Christ, so i believe the washing of sin is a result of the covenant and obedience and is a fulfillment on our part in the action of changing and on the Father's part by forgiving and washing away the sins through the atonement of Jesus Christ. We are in partnership with God by entering into His covenant, when we do our part, we can rest assured that He does his.

    • @brendamartin3444
      @brendamartin3444 2 месяца назад

As the first commenter pointed out, there is a separation, think of each “and” as a bullet point, because Hebrew has no punctuation the word “and” was used the same way comas are for us, so adjusting the verse according to this truth it would now look like this…
      “And now why tarriest thou?
      •arise
      •be baptized
•wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord (Atonement)”
Notice that there is no “and” between “sins” and “calling” because it is the calling on the name of Jesus that washes away sins
Then if you notice, D&C 39:10 is Christ quoting Acts 22:16, and expounding upon it with more truth and light
      “But, behold
•the days of thy deliverance are come
•if thou wilt hearken to my voice, which saith unto thee:
      •Arise
      •be baptized
•wash away your sins, calling on my name
      •you shall receive my Spirit
•and a blessing so great as you never have known”
Deliverance comes: because we hearken to the voice of Jesus; because we get up and go get baptized; because we call upon the name of Jesus which is the thing that washed us clean; and because we have received the gift of the Holy ghost; only now can we receive a blessing so great as we have never known (eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom with Father)
It is following each bullet point as a whole that we now receive the Celestial Kingdom, each bullet point is an item in its own right, but they work together as a whole to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man in the Celestial Kingdom with Father
Whenever I desire to rightly understand a scripture, I take what is being taught and turn the information into bullet points the way the Hebrews did, then all of a sudden things that were confusing have now become clear
      I hope this helped…
      🙂

Offer up a broken heart is a contrite spirit to be all in with Christ. After you have repented, you can keep all of his commandments and are willing to serve him at all, Hazards and even disregard your physical life as his then you have offered up all that you and all that you have in when he excepts your sacrifice, which will be his timing not yours will be cleansed by fire, and you will know it. It is life-changing, and it is true conversion. That is the first comforter and you might receive the second comforter as you continue on that path.

I'm curious why baptism is so often referred to as "for the remission of sins," given what you've pointed out. Why is that phrase not added after reception of the Holy Ghost-- for example, the Fourth Article of Faith could read, "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion ; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost and for the remission of sins." Is it represented that way to point the mind toward the next step in the process, with the objective being the ultimate remission of sins?

From what I have been learning it is the matrimonial line (mother) that chooses the birthright. Although, I do not think it is used often and it will go along with 'tradition' of oldest as he will take on the mother, unmarried sisters, etc when the father dies, hence why he gets double the inheritance compared to his brothers. If the matriarch chooses to use the birthright choice, I assume that son would get a double portion. I wonder if this is also why their can he jealousy, rivalry etc besides ego
