Been saying for a while now that drafted players salaries should have a smaller lux tax hit than traded players. Otherwise, you penalize orgs for actually paying attention, drafting smartly and developing young players. Smaller market teams might then be able to keep their draft picks, pay them and then have some money/cap space to try and get a free agent.

Drafted players should not be taxed under the same rules designed to prevent rich teams from outbidding poorer teams in free agency. That's all Lacob was saying and it makes total sense. One of the worst things about modern sports is the lack of loyalty between players and their teams and fans, and the consequent lack of legit rivalries. This is due to how easy it is for players to move around and, for example, create superteams with their buddies. Rules that incentivize teams to retain the players they draft, players that grow up in a particular fanbase, would help to ease the problem of today's star player movement, and help to create bona fide rivalries. Luxury tax rules that don't distinguish between drafted players and free agents does the opposite.

  • @albertwong1182
    @albertwong1182 2 года назад +5

Here is what I think the luxury tax system should be.
Teams should get a full deduction of the player’s salary from its tax base if that player:
    (1) spends his entire career with the team, or
    (2) is acquired by the team within his first four seasons or first 300 games AND was on a rookie deal or minimum salary deal at the time of the acquisition
To combat the loss of luxury tax payments, the league should lower the luxury tax line to the soft salary cap level while also increasing the luxury tax penalty.
With this setup, teams are now disincentivized from building superteams by solely snatching players from other teams. They must build from the ground up instead. True, the Lakers, Clippers, and Nets will complain very loudly as they are the ones who will have to fork over the largest tax payments. But so what? They deserve to be penalized the most because they aren’t building their roster from the ground up.
Also, this setup will help small market teams retain their star players that they developed as they no longer need to worry about the luxury tax.
So in the end, aside from the Lakers, Clippers, and Nets, everyone wins.

The Warriors used the flexibility in the rules to spike its allowed salaries. This is a fact, its up to you to determine what judgement you assign to it. The cap is a function of League revenues, 50% goes to player salaries. But the 50% rule does not per se limit what a specific team can pay its players which is set by individual contract. The Warriors used a spike in the cap to sign Durant, while Curry was on a low-ball contract - totally allowed. When it cam time to pay Curry, it spiked payroll to well above the cap - again totally allowed due to Bird Right rules. GS avoided triggering the hard cap and held the extra space through a sign and trade for Russel which was in turn traded for Wiggins. So by rule they are allowed to be over the limit, and by checkbook they can afford to, which not every team can do. But to presume that the complaints of other owners is in the interest of parity would be a lie - the majority of teams are above the CAP and tax threshold. Parity is bad for ratings and ratings are key to growing the revenues, so, I expect little change in the new CBA.

Why doesn’t the NBA just adopt a hard cap and increase it yearly so the league becomes more competitive and the bottom feeder teams have a shot at rising, it would suck for the superstars but it’s a players league rn maybe it’s time to transition over to a teams league again

    • @dmichael100

The dirty little secret that modern players have forgotten (or never knew) is that it is ultimately better for players and fans if it is a team's league. Players will still be amazingly wealthy for playing a game- but the NBA has always been at its heart teams playing to win championships. Great players are still celebrated but within a team they have become identified with.
All you have to do is seriously consider: what if the top players got together and decided they were going to make up their own league and teams- kind of like the greatest playground game in the world? Who needs the NBA? Fans want to see our great talent right? Sounds great initially- but how popular would this be in reality? For how long? Playground games or allstar games of even the best players are entertaining for a game or two (or at least they used to be) but not for season after season.
In the modern social media age, players have a falsely exaggerated idea of their INDIVIDUAL importance as brands or social media influencers. This is all transitory "15 minutes of fame" stuff. Steph Curry will likely go on to a successful media career of some kind after he's finished playing- he obviously has the comportment for it. But it will spring from his success on a team in the historical NBA(as he understands).
The popularity and fan support of the NBA is cemented into its history and the structure of true team competition. Players are the most important part of the equation- until they change the equation itself.

The reason for no hard cap is that the CBA requires allocation of 50% of revenues to players but there is no way to predict revenues accurately. So as structured, the CBA sets maximum salaries based upon a percentage of the cap - 35% for the "super max". The CBA also places limits on the annual increase (or decrease) allowed as a percentage of the prior year salary, 8% if my memory is correct. And given multi-year contracts the lack of a link between the annual increase and the cap growth make it near impossible to use a hard cap since would limit annual increases already in place in a players contract in any year revenues do not grow enough. (Or in the case where the cap grows faster, provides extra cash to pay higher or additional salaries - this is how GS were able to sign Durant - a cap spike). People confuse the CBA for an attempt at parity between teams but that is not its goal, the goal is distribution of revenues to players.
The reality is that teams do not drive the revenues - individual stars do. And those stars want their share, which arguably they deserve even more for some individuals. But, there need to be the flexibility to retain the "star" players with annual increases in contract which will drive a team salary above cap after a year or two. (The 2022-23 cap is $123.6M - and currently 23 of 30 teams exceed that amount). The soft cap used by the NBA sets a tax apron (amount above which the luxury tax is imposed) at $150M for 22-23 to allow for the need to honor annual increases to contracted players. (12 of 30 teams are above that figure). This allocation dynamic is why trades have to be for similar salaries.
And then there is the repeater tax provisions. 50% of the luxury tax goes to the other teams to help create some balance and the reality is it does prevent the creation of "super-teams" to some degree. (This is why no one has an offer for Durant or Irving right now and why you do not have a team of 5 all stars or max players anywhere in the league).
I am not sure there are any good examples of working hard caps out there in any sport, especially where a percentage of revenues goes to players and revenues cannot be predicted but contracts must last a few years. While fans may say they want parity, they only want it when it takes away from other teams and not their favorite. When it comes to having to let a drafted player becoming a star leave due to salary, fans hate hard caps and teams lose the investment in developing a player. So, unless the 50% dynamic goes away - which it will not because players will not agree to less - a soft cap is the best that you can do. Hard cap means 23 teams will be cutting guys this year, pick you favorite and figure out who has to go if a hard cap is imposed and then think of G-League and two-way players to round out the roster - you will not like the results.

The point of the salary tax is to stop the wealthiest teams from buying the best players. The Warriors spent the most because they have 3 great players they drafted. Wiggins is the only one who is already expensive that got added to the team but he was considered as overpaid. Really, even tho the Warriors have the highest payroll, they don't look good at paper and was bottled with injuries even in this season and still fought through adversities. The luxury tax should be based on trading for players as opposed to hitting teams who developed players and then their contract comes up and start to earn more. Therefore, for example, Gary Payton earning a contract with GSW shouldn't affect the luxury tax since GSW basically developed him after being rejected by multiple teams. That would mean the tax should apply to players like KD to Brooklyn, Lebron to the Lakers etc. Furthermore, this only will get exemptions for rookie contracts and veterans will all be subject to different tiers of taxes.

I think if you sign player in the first year or two of their career and they remain on your team then you should be able to exceed the salary cap to sign them without luxury tax penalties. On the other hand you shouldn’t be able to trade for a player and their bird rights and then exceed the cap to sign them. From my perspective, if the league were fair and balanced for all teams then the Warriors would not be able to sign and retain Wiggins, but could sign Jordon Poole with no penalties. Their would be no workarounds. If the salaries of all drafted players exceeded the cap then the team should only be able to sign minimums. If the salaries of drafted players was 100 million with a 120 million cap then Wiggins could only be signed for 20 million or less. The change above would still reward teams who drafted, identified, and groomed talent as well protecting the opportunity to achieve a dynasty. It would also level the playing field far better than it is now.
They really need to simplify things. The NBA Cap rules should not look like an FBI handbook. The only reason it’s so complicated is because big city, rich owners have written the rules for decades. Real Sports fans want a level playing field. We don’t want Silicon Valley billionaires capable of buying a championship to be able to do so. Between that, the refereeing, the rule changes, player movement, etc. the game has become closer to a globetrotter game than a sport.

It is like the NBA would prefer teams to not develop and keep players around. This is a joke and needs to change. I get it if you are a team like LA, Brooklyn, or Miami a few years who go out and sign players in free agency. The luxury tax makes sense for that, but if you develop a player you should not get penalized.

As usual more rules and regulations cause more problems, not fix them. There should not be a salary cap or luxury tax. Before the great Warriors management team came along, the Lakers and Knicks generated the most money. Over the last 40 years the Knicks have zero rings, the Lakers about 10 and small market San Antonio 5. Money helps but management is more important. The owners who told Windy they are worried about the gap between team revenues, are they worried about the gap in salaries between the super stars and the role players. I'm sure the warriors would have loved to give GP2 15 mil if that stupid luxury tax was not in place.

You shouldn’t be penalized for drafting smarter than anyone else. This was an overreaching, overreaction to help teams that are ran poorly compete. Hire competent basketball people to scout and draft talent and fire those who don’t deliver. I would argue that the luxury tax rule by design will hurt more small market teams than help. Take OKC for example when they had Durant, Westbrook, Harden, had the luxury tax rules been the same then there would’ve been absolutely no way they would’ve been able to keep them all. If they really wanted to make it fair and increase the competition they should penalize teams for consecutively finishing in the bottom 3. Teams would be forced to compete smarter and harder to avoid penalties or suffer fines and draft positions. Rewarding bad teams and penalizing the good teams is the main reasons why their isn’t any parody in the NBA today. Each year we pretty much can ink in the playoff teams before the year starts. This leaves teams in the middle of the pack in no man’s land while the top teams bicker with the bottom teams essentially, which actually epitomizes are socioeconomic structure in America, but I digress. I think they should commend the top teams for being the prototype for success, admonish the poorly run teams and reward or incentivize the middle teams because these teams are adequately competing and maybe needs a little bit of help to compete with top teams. This would ensure parody and competitive balance and reward the fans who deserve to see there teams get better. Teams like Portland, Utah, Denver, etc. who are consistently ran well, but can never get over the hump, but what do I know their the smart people right?

The luxury tax system is fine. People keep saying drafted players salaries should have treated differently, but do people realize that some teams stay competitive every year and they rarely get lottery pick. The only way for those teams to improve is either via undrafted players or trade. Why should we penalize teams trying to be competitive? OKC has been tanking many many years to get the big three. Warriors before drafting Steph and Klay, they have been on the verge of tanking for a while. Also, they shut down most productive players in 19-20 seasons just to win 15 games. Do you know how hard a team only to win 15 games after winning 57 games a season ago? So, many People here are encouraging that, as long as you agree to develop your own drafted players, you are OKAY to tank. Look, the Warriors has been raising ticket prices year by year but the team still making a lot of revenue after paying so much luxury tax, why we normal people like us have to worry about the owners' pocket? Also, the shoe deals Steph and Klay earned way more than their salaries, if they want to keep the core and worry about the luxury tax, they can take a pay cut like what James Harden did. Stop being a homer, no team will win forever. When your team is on the opposite side of the spectrum, you would be yelling why other owners don't pay more taxes.
