Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses how both HIV and its treatment can also accelerate the aging of our bone and muscle by a decade.
“Antiretroviral cocktails can make HIV undetectable and untransmittable. However, there is evidence that both the virus and its treatment can also accelerate the aging of our bone and muscle by a decade. Weakening bone and muscle can lead to falls, fractures and early frailty. Now scientists are looking to drugs already in clinical trials for cancer to help. The drugs interfere with too-high expression of a receptor, called aryl hydrocarbon receptor. The receptor, which normally is highly expressed in both bone and muscle cells, is thought to have a key role in aging and lifespan. But too high levels result in increased amounts of destructive oxidative stress. Oxidative stress damages cell powerhouses, increases inflammation and generally ages our bone and muscle. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
