NASA Experts Assist in Chilean Miners' Survival and Rescue

- On Aug. 31, a NASA team of experts arrived in Santiago for about a week as part of NASA's commitment to provide U.S. assistance. NASA's assistance was only a small contribution to the Chilean government's overall rescue effort. The NASA team included two medical doctors, a psychologist and an engineer. Dr. Michael Duncan, deputy chief medical officer in NASA's Space Life Sciences Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston,
led the team. The other team members are physician J.D. Polk, psychologist Al Holland and engineer Clint Cragg.
That's what NASA is for.
To spread the knowledge accumulated for the good of all humankind.

Indeed NASA did manage to set up a team only on a few days, most of them were senior experts, dropped everything they were doing and travel down to the Chilean desert. The comments here in Chile were that the advice in the behavioral and medical aspects alone were very insightful.
Now that the miners are already out, thank God there weren't any serious medical emergencies while they were confined, but that scenario was also considered and NASA experience was priceless.
NASA also helped to design the escape capsule they were using. NASA's support was invaluable during the rescue operation! NASA needs more funding.

NASA provided some useful insight. They also participated in the design of the Fenix which the Chilean Navy built. From Chile we say thanks for joining this noble effort!
Also to the drillers in Pennsylvania that provided the key drill bits to widen the borehole which completed plan B. The T-130 belonged to a U.S-Chilean company, Geotech Boyle Bros and was operated by three Yanks of a subsidiary of the firm.

Glad the miners got out and reunited with families. I have nothing against NASA because I been a "space admirer" since 6th grade...but I saw from this video, the federal government step in to police this issue. Why does the U.S. have to keep stepping in on issues elsewhere and not focus on issues within our country?
