I lived in Taiwan for two years while I was a college student. Mostly, I loved it, though I cringe when I remember how immature and ignorant I was (still am, probably) and how patient people were to put up with me. It's an amazing place, and the thing I really miss is the smiles and kindness of the people. I hope to bring my wife and daughter there some time soon so they can experience a bit of the magic that is Taiwan!

But when you start learning Chinese and really knowing Taiwanese, you will gradually notice our passive-aggressive culture. Before learning Chinese, you will just be treated as a "foreigner". @@k0185123 Yes and no! As a short guy without "Hollywood" good looks, people did NOT treat me like a prince. I observed however that they treated tall blond friends like gods and goddesses. Sure there's a superficiality to human relationships everywhere. But in general, I found people very warm and friendly in Taiwan, and they had a high degree of culture even among uneducated people.
I was in USA studying microbiology at graduate school in 1991. I struggled for one year and quit. Best decision I have ever made. Now I am working as an anesthetist over 20 years. Find what you good at and go with it.

In Taiwan, garbage sorting is very strict. Some recyclable garbage can be exchanged for money at the recycling center. Therefore, you may occasionally see people collecting these garbage that can be exchanged for money and go to the recycling center to get money. 🇹🇼❤🇺🇸

The loneliness is indeed a big problem for foreigners staying in Taiwan because Taiwanese are not open up enough to foreigners, part of reasons might be most people don’t know how to talk to foreigners.
Those strange thing you saw were City Street Cleaners hired by local city, they usually start working since after midnight to morning time (before rush hours). Same as US have those small tucks with vaccume tubes on the side sucking up debris. Taiwan does have cleaning trucks but having those manual cleaners also.
Those big bags should be for recycling, we also deliver various metals (=trash/metal chips from our CNC) to recycling stations, however we deliver it by car and sometimes if it's just too small and standing around for too long by scooter. There are various stages in life, educational decades, single without kids, (possibly) married with kids, grandparents. I guess she might think different when she's in another stage and has to take care about someone. Food... not sure what she can miss from the U.S., for example we have everything in Tainan local and international food I feel.
Culture shock! obvious differences in cultures you had experienced. People in most of Asia in general don't come across as "warm" especially toward people they don't know - that does not mean they are not interested in meeting you. You are very well spoken as you are beautiful. It's too bad that you decided to leave, I am sure you have many friends with time. Good honest advise for people to travel and get to know about other cultures, however, not everyone can afford traveling aboard.
About the older woman pushing the carts full of bags. They're generally from much poorer families who live by selling these recyclable stuffs to a recycle collection spot where the middle man who generally have a truck to transport to the real recycle businesses or companies obviously for money too. For some older woman they picked them along the way but for some they know where they can pick up in a large quantity. Places like shops.
She said people in US are very open and expressive. I dont dispute the part about expressive, but I disagree with the claim that people in US are open. I have lived in cities in US, and I find most people keep to themselves and the society in general lack the feeling of community. However, I am mainly talking about my observations in cities.
I think she is talking about the recycling 阿媽 .. pushing huge hand cart worth of plastic recyclables to collection locations to redeem her pay .. Huge loads over hand carts, or motor cycles, even trucks are sort of standard practices in Asia .. There was once a story that An Indian truck manufacturer would license from a western company the knowhow to build a 10 ton truck, but he said he would only label it as a 5 ton truck .. Why ? Because everybody knows that in India, everybody would regularly load a 5 ton truck with 10 tons load .. It is a custom fit for the market, and clientele ..
I have been to Kalispell, Polson and Missoula in Montana and I must say being born in Montana and lived in Taiwan for five years, is a miracle by itself.
she might assimilate to Taiwan better if she can spend extra effort to learn Chinese. she needs to ask those women doing recycling or scavenging, and appreciates its benefit of making streets clean. It's way better than lot of cities in US where homeless people gather, trash or graffiti pile up instead of being cleaned on time.
Not liking Asian food, i would never have went there. Food is a focal point of any long term destination. I could be wrong but it appears she did not integrate with locals, maybe hangout with expats only. When I worked in the middle east. Most memorable was visiting coworkers at home and dining at traditional restaurants sampling local food.
Sorry about your relationship with your previous bf and family. I hope you continue to keep your mind open about Chinese traditions and that not ALL Chinese families are like that (not meeting the son's gf until they are ready to get married), I just want to clarify that. :) Good luck with everything and your future adventures!
以前我奶奶都是早上4點起床,5點叫我們起床後她就出門撿回收物品,家裡並不缺錢,可是她說不想在家像個閒人一樣,有次我跟著她一起去,結果她是先到公園運動,跟朋友聊天,我就被一群爺爺奶奶好好的摸頭摸了一遍又一遍。然後就回家途中有垃圾就撿,奶奶說可以賣錢的分出來,不能賣的拿去丟垃圾桶,自己住的地方要靠自己維持整潔,她從小就如此教育我們,雖然現在她不在了,但她的精神永遠活在我們心中。

父親過逝,母親也去撿垃圾,原本我們不要她去,家裡不缺這點錢,想想她應該是無聊,就不管她了。921地震她跑去棉被工廠跟老闆說她要捐棉被,老闆認識我媽,她說妳捐幾床我就捐幾床。她出車禍,後來聽到肇事者單親家還有老小要養,賠償沒要求還要我哥拿錢給他。或許她一生都在幫助人,車禍時醫生要我們要有心裡準,但後來撐過了,醫生說我媽命大。人啊一定要積善。

台灣這些老人家做資源回收有分兩大類一種是把回收物品捐贈给慈濟工作站在台灣各地都有工作站工作站有很多義工會把回收物分類再賣给回收商換取金錢而這些金錢會给慈濟上級整合集中再援助到台灣和世界各國各地需要援助的人事物:另一類是老人家當做運動兼環保和賺點錢貼補家用(大部分家裡都是很有錢也有少部分是生活困苦的)
有些家裡不缺錢有做資源回收七成是某些宗教團體的回收志工 .. 大部分還是貧困的人居多 .. 台灣在最近 10 年已經有讓老人家居住 .. 但那個是有退休俸可是小孩子有自己的家居住的地方也有些遠 .. 礙於面子問題就資源回收 !!
不管是那類的人,她們都是令人尊敬的長者,為台灣貢獻自己的心力,功不可滅。

在台灣常發現,年長的女性退休後大多投入資源回收或慈善事業,年長的男性退休後則是四處閒晃或公園下棋,但不管是哪一種其實都只是為了打發時間而已。

資源回收在亞洲這部分是很常見的,但是在歐美國家確是做得很不徹底,我在澳洲美國各生活了五年,我發現這些所謂已開發國家標榜著愛地球環保,但是這些國家資源回收生產再利用的比例非常低
住過澳加西班牙,他們的資源回收分類很少,很多在台灣屬於資源回收分類的,他們都是歸類為一般垃圾,然後資源回收很多不同類都丟一起
住過比利時你就會發現這裡環保徹底到令人驚訝,非常了不起

臺灣人勤儉持家,年紀雖大但不想浪費時間或不想造成家人負擔去撿可回收的物品賣錢,穿梭在大街小巷,看起來是有點危險!也許家境有的或許需要援助,政府對這方面是否可去去探討一下,然後提出解決方針?當然外國人要不要住臺灣是他們自由的選擇,包括天氣、環境、交通、工作、食物等等各方面,也許不敷他們的需求,人各有志没什麼好要求的。也許可反應臺灣有什麼需要改進的,作為施政方針也不錯!

鼓勵影片中的美國美女也去南韓 日本 住一段時間 跟台灣比較一下 社會環境跟文化差異 就我知道 南韓生活壓力比台灣大的多 我覺得台灣最大的問題是買房成本跟租屋成本 我不知道外國人是否對台灣的高房價跟租屋成本很搖頭? 我自己是台灣人 我最有意見的應該是台灣的高房價跟高房租 或許這也是讓外國人覺得台灣比較負面的部分。

應該是說不要太視野狹小,各地都有自己的優缺點,不要小看台灣,也不要忽視其他的世界角落.
如果不是有優點,她也不會停留五年.現在她找到自己想要成為心理諮商的夢想,當然就要回美國進修.祝福她高飛!!!

台灣有些地方可能會讓西方人很不習慣,尤其是文化上的差異,但是台灣有自己獨特迷人的地方,我第一次去台灣就很喜歡台灣,但是也有一些讓我覺得不是太好的地方。我11月就要去台灣居住並學習中文了!非常期待!

I have been to Kalispell, Polson and Missoula in Montana and I must say being born in Montana and lived in Taiwan for five years, is a miracle by itself.

she might assimilate to Taiwan better if she can spend extra effort to learn Chinese. she needs to ask those women doing recycling or scavenging, and appreciates its benefit of making streets clean. It's way better than lot of cities in US where homeless people gather, trash or graffiti pile up instead of being cleaned on time.

她主要是想回美國念碩士。她中文只懂一點,而台灣用英語授課的學程又少,所以在台她有求學困難。
Not liking Asian food, i would never have went there. Food is a focal point of any long term destination. I could be wrong but it appears she did not integrate with locals, maybe hangout with expats only. When I worked in the middle east. Most memorable was visiting coworkers at home and dining at traditional restaurants sampling local food.
