The main drawback of using a reflector is that models tend to find the light uncomfortably bright so you have to work fast.
You’re absolutely right. This also depends on the lighting angle and surface of the reflector. But I think the pros outweigh the cons of setting up and using off camera flash. Especially when we compare dollars spent. We use both. We travel with the reflector. When we are local we use flash depending on the location.
On which situation you like using the gold side of the reflector?
I use the gold reflector when I want to add warmth to the model/scene. Sometimes it is too strong. Like all shots you can take some test shots and see if you like the effect. I’ll post a follow up video covering all of the 5-1 surfaces and how/when to use them. The model on the right side of the thumbnail for this video was lit with the gold reflector.

That’s right. It does matter where the reflector is relative to the subject. A lot of people clave it below their subject which gives an unattractive look. I’d say the reflector needs to be at least head high and a depending on the scenario a little to the side.
