  • Squonk is an american band with a highly unorthodox style, including a spectacular live show and larger than life stage props and instruments.
In this video I tell the story of how I helped them make a truly enormous instrument for their latest show "Brouhaha".

This seems like a great show! Thanks for sharing the story about the development of the Bruhaha Bellows. I'd also inuitively go for measuring the distance, based on the same concerns. Although lidar is significantly more expensive, I wonder if this type of sensor would be reliable for this application. But as the moral of the story taught us, there is no reason to cross the stream to get water. Looking forward to the videos on Klik 3 and the use of ESP32! 👍

      Thanks Dempa!
"No reason to cross the stream", indeed!

Are we ever going to get a second video of the woodwind algorithm?

    Great to see you back!
I am trying to figure out how sense a much smaller set of bellows on a concertina. I need to try your breath sensor but at the moment I am using a load cell (1kg) between two plates. It works but it is like trying to play a very slightly squishy brick!
I have one of these dirt cheap VL53L0X lidar sensors, did you consider one of these? So far, I have only tried it on measuring my hand movement relative to the sensor but it seems responsive and have not noticed any significant noise problem.

      Sounds like a fun project.
      "very slightly squishy brick" 🤣
I haven't tried the VL53L0X, but it might work. The air pressure sensors work great, of course, but I still think a good non-mechanical solution would be very attractive...

Which one of your breath sensors did you use for the Squonk project?

I made a custom 3d printed cover, to hold the bottle top and CNY70 together, but otherwise it's just like all the others I've made over the years. You can see the setup at 7:42

Thank you. I apologise, I should have rerun the video before asking you.
I am really glad to see you back as I am following your advice on BT midi and ESP32 microcontrollers. At the moment I am using a Lolin D32 with a rechargeable Li-ion battery. I have 25+ buttons to sense in a small area (about 16cm diameter), each button is just the head of an M3 machine screw wired to an MPR121 capacitive touch controller - you can connect upto 8 of these to an ESP32 and each one can sense 12 buttons. The buttons work but, like the load cell I use to sense bellows movement, they do not feel right. Nothing moves in response to touch or pressure.
