So I found a Capture Card that finally solved one of the biggest headaches I've had when trying to capture gameplay. HDCP. This copyright protection is impossible to turn off on some devices so the only way to capture footage is to bypass it. this 35 dollar capture card could do what 250 dollar capture cards couldn't

can it record audio.
Tip: When you're describing an object in your hand, don't shake your hand, causing the image to blur and making it go out of focus.
HDCP: punishes paying customers, while doing nothing to stop piracy. I thought we learned this lesson in the 90s...
Yea, but the studios hate the customers. They seem to think they should get all the $ for nothing at all, probably because that is the deal that most artists wind up with unless they are very good, very lucky and had a good entertainment lawyer before they played the first note...
All copy protection punishes paying customers.
What do you mean you thought we learned this lesson? The idea isn't about stopping piracy, it's about control.
You will own nothing and be happy.
There is a reason DRM stands for Digital Restrictions Management.
back in the days when they did this with VCR's, and you could buy a tiny box that cleans out the signal but says you over a milllion times "pls dont pirate, we dont mean you to pirate shit, just meant for your own better quality picture viewing"
A number of the Chinesium HDMI "splitter" boxes strip out HDCP and only cost $5-10 and will allow you to use any capture device. I picked one up for capturing PS3 video on my black magic 4k.
Yea these are basically choice for $10 on Ali express, I had one gave it to my brother and just ordered another.
I used one of these from AliExpress to capture foreign TV programmes with no English soundtrack, record them and then use AI to transcribe and translate and then add subtitles in the English language. I live abroad and some of their local TV looks good but I cannot understand it.
how do you know which are which?
@@TatharNuar In my case, VHD-1X2MN3D dropped the HDCP. I ordered it back in 2018, so I don't know if it's still available, or if it still does the trick.
They don't strip out HDCP. They allow the HDCP handshake from the monitor to be applied to both output ports. It's not even intentional, the name brand products have to do extra work to make that not happen. A very select few will have built in HDCP compliance, but those are very rare. Both are technically illegal, the second is intentionally illegal so much harder to get away with.
The reason those high-branded devices don't capture when HDCP is on is because they actually need to keep their HDMI license and they're afraid of getting sued. These nameless unbranded capture devices come from pretty much untraceable manufacturers that don't care about licensing. They can just source the parts without it.
The reality is, the honest customer gets hurt by drm. Drm has never stopped any piracy in any way. Drm is a tool to try to make honest consumers pay more. I get hbo max from my attfiber for free. It is completely unusable because it only allows 720p in a web browser on a desktop pc. I cannot believe how terrible the experience is for paying customers over the customers that sail the seven seas. Things just work right when you download drm free copies of movies and tv shows. I'd pay if someone actually offered me the same experience. (many actually do, as seen by all the people paying 200-300 dollars a year for services that provide them access to pirated content with easy to use front ends for a tv) The studios reject that money by not offering the same experience. 200 dollars a year is more money than cable companies ever paid for content on your behalf despite you paying them 200 a month. Studios could easily offer a 10 dollar streaming service with all content on it and they'd make much more money than they did via cable tv carriage fees. That is why netflix worked. The price increases since then are just CEOs milking us for our money so CEOs can have more of it.
Just saw the video and would like to tell you, you got the premise wrong: It's not that the expensive card can't show the footage, it def can, it is that it doesn't allow you by design, it is copyright protection after all. The cheap 35 dollar card says screw the protection scheme and just happily displays it. these tactics go back whole the way to VHS recorders. The expensive ones (JVC, Sony) blocked the signal while copying, while the cheap recorders let you get away with anything.
Thats true
"It's not that the expensive card can't show the footage, it def can, it is that it doesn't allow you by design"
so it CAN'T 🤣🤣🤣
@@LabMonkey-k2j my point being: it is by design. It's an artificial limitation done in software. If you hack the expensive card and remove the limitation it can show the video just fine.
@@77slevins_video_channel my ferrari can also do off-roading when I adjust it. Its silly reasoning
@@LabMonkey-k2j Your comparison makes no sense. This is what companies literally do. Same thing with copyrighted images on websites; you can't copy them just by right clicking but if you go into the website's code you can find the image file and download it.
$3 HDMi splitters were shown to bypass HDCP protection a very long time ago.
Do they passthrough the original image?
I have some cheap splitters that won't strip it out.
I just got one of those too. Well, it was more than $3 but it’s not a name brand one. So if I run into that HDCP issue I’ll be sure to pull the splitter out.
The problem with these capture devices(all the cheap ones are basically the same) is that they use MJPEG over USB2(the ones claiming to be USB3 are lying) instead of a more modern codec like MP4/AVC. This leads to a lot of artifacting and quality loss. Also they sometimes don't output exactly 30/60fps which leads to audio-video desync over time, which requires restarting the capture periodically to sync up the audio-video again.
So these are useful if you want a cheap way to make short captures of some stuff occasionally, especially HDCP protected stuff, and don't care about quality. But for any long-term use I would recommend in investing in more expensive capture devices and HDCP bypass tools.
I concur. I got one of them, opened up to check all the chips used, and yup, exactly as you wrote.
I also grabbed a HDMI duplicator / repeater, which supposedly removes HDCP. I haven't had a chance to test it, but many reviewers wrote it works.
So it may be better to use one of these + a good quality capture card. However, these HDMI repeaters are fairly limited in supported resolution/refreshrate.
@@catsspat Yeah, I found an HDMI Splitter on Amazon that does remove HDCP. The HDCP version it supports only works up to 1080p, but that's more than enough for my use cases. There are people that have found ones that work with the newer HDCP 2.2 which allows 4K, but sometimes you get a defective one and even if you don't it can be finicky to get working(some people say they have to plug a 4K Display into one port in order for the other to work with their capture card).
mjpeg has objectively less information loss than mp4 or avc? mp4 and avc can have higher compression, but mjpeg is literally just saving each screen as a jpeg picture (hence the JPEG part of MJPEG, are you going to tell me jpegs are "artifact" and not modern enough) and not worrying about doing frame-difference calculations, so it makes larger files, but they are immune to most video compression artifacts.
newer doesn't mean it makes video look better
also most cheap capture cards have very little memory, they can literally only pull the current frame and process it, so again, MJPEG encoding on a device with a single frame buffer can literally physically never be the cause of audio video desync.
i don't know why you think framerate has anything to do with audio which is not stored in 60 frames per second but closer to 48 thousand samples per second, so whatever desync issues you are having is in whatever software you are recording the stream with.
@benjaminpierce8835 The video output of the cards I've tested is not exactly 60fps/30fps, but a bit under that. I've tried with multiple different programs including the recommended Potplayer and others like OBS. Some programs or settings will try to actually display all the frames, but that leads to Video/Audio desync since the frames aren't synced with the audio anymore. Other programs or settings "fix" the sync by discarding frames, but then you're losing frames, and it causes visual stutter. Maybe newer models have fixed this issue(though I doubt it), but this was definitely a common issue when they first started flooding the market as I tested multiple different ones to see if they were the same or not.
As for debates over superior codecs, JPEG is a lossy compression itself, so you're going to be losing detail anyway even if you're capturing the whole frame, and these devices aren't even outputting high quality JPEG. You get JPEG artifacting instead of video codec artifacting, which isn't better, just different. There is a lossless version of MJPEG, but these devices don't use that because of the next issue.
It may be a hardware limitation that they're using MJPEG, and MJPEG can produce decent results if given enough bandwidth, but these cards don't have that option. These cards use USB2.0, which greatly restricts bandwidth by modern standards. MJPEG is a bandwidth heavy format. These cards are hurting themselves with cost cutting at both the video processing and the bandwidth. You either need to include the hardware to output more efficient video compression, or you need to include the hardware bandwidth to output the less efficient compression. These cards do neither, which leads to objectively worse results than MP4(AVC) cards.
I'm not saying these capture cards are useless. If you just need a cheap and dirty solution to capture stuff occasionally, they're a great deal. You just should be aware of this going in.
And if you're a content creator, where capturing device output and posting it online is your job, then I'd highly recommend to invest in higher quality capture hardware, since it affects the quality of your content. Having one of these cheap cards which can easily bypass HDCP protections could still be useful even then, as bypassing HDCP on a normal capture card can be finicky even if you find the right hardware for it(there's a reason why I still have a couple of these). But if your job is capturing content, these cheap cards shouldn't be your primary capture method.
@@japzone you are just telling me the low bitrate is low bitrate, that is obvious. the better devices will give higher bitrates, but the artifacts are not because of MJPEG.
also usb2.0 is not the limiting factor here, even expensive capture cards usually can't handle 480mbps bitrate, that is insane.
yes, devices that only support a low quality video will give low quality results, but the reasons you listed were incorrect.
i think you have just noticed that higher quality devices that have better hardware encoding that create higher bitrate videos just happen to have more convenient options like usb3.0 and formats with higher compression and have created some causation in your head. just look at the specs of the device before you buy it.
I'm instantly attracted by the title and any chance to stick two fingers up to the studios who make it impossible to just capture video for your own purposes, you own personal use.
I use the same capture device. It does 1080p 30. If you do 60 FPS half the frames are blank. It does 720 60 correctly though.
Didn't knew that but how did you check that in the editor ?
@@AKG58Z I do all my video work in FFMPEG and when I was recording I got a butt ton of warnings.
Yep, back a long time ago when I was developing newer cable box applications and wanted to share the application and content playback while I was using the device, I used a similar HDMI splitter box that "failed" to implement the HDMI protection stuff correctly and it magically made things works as well.
PS 3 is also notorious for the HDCP issue - not as much of a thing now that it is 2 generations back but still.
Honestly, you'd think HDCP would be a thing that the PS3 would turn on and off "as needed" based on the content being displayed... nope, even the _safe mode boot screen_ is locked with it, and you need a chinesium HDMI splitter, not just for recording with an Elgato or similar, but for the PS3 to even be able to _directly output_ to a modern non-TV monitor, at all.
I've been using an HDMI splitter connected to a capture card and an HDCP-compliant monitor. Nice that this setup saves a step.
Thank you for this video. It is very informative and concise. I'm old and I'm kind of new to streaming and video editing. But, I did purchase this card. This was something I was going to dive into at a later date, but coming upon your video, I resolved a problem that I hadn't yet encountered, and didn't know I would. All for a very reasonable price. Thanks
Most likely this was based of the usb HDMI dongle that was released during the pandemic. It was sold for less than 5 dollars for the dongle and bought around 6pcs to repurpose digicams with HDMI out as webcams. Since webcams during last pandemic was a pretty hard to come by.
It was able to by pass hdcp protection from my shield tv and other streaming boxes.
i have this one, got it because it was cheap. It is NOT AT ALL 4K 60, its 720p 30, and the contrast on everything is cranked up for no reason 😐
God i love amazon
I have the "1080" version. Looks like I guessed right. They just changed the words on the box.
I use a $12.95 4K 60fps capture card that outputs to 1080p 60fps. I set OBS to a good 4K 60fps recording setting. I don’t know if it’s truly upscaling but the only device I can view the 4K output is my iPhone. Fine by me, the quality is freaking amazing! I have a recently purchased Bosgame P3 Mini PC. Using it for gaming. The quality of my videos have gone from good/ok/decent to immaculate. These little cards do the trick. I have yet to understand why they’re not offering 4K 60fps outputs for the low low.
I found a cheap HDMI splitter that does the same thing. It sends the legit 'I am allowed to see HDCP' ID from a monitor and just clones the encrypted HDMI signal to a second port (with any old capture card)
Care to share which? I've bought 2 before that people said worked but they didn't once I got one :(
Copyright protection is very distinct from copy-protection. Some corporate lawyer types have purposely confused the two, so don't feel too bad. But "copy-protection" are the words you're looking for.
Bought one of these a few years ago. I was hoping that it would let me record HDCP protected content but I haven't tested it out yet so this is very promising
Thanks for telling us about this. This is really helpful for all of us that streamings and Twitch stuff. I just don't know why they make it so hard, because we're not doing anything wrong.
It's a war out there. HDMI Standard & Practices... they got licenses to sell. But a lot of the people who they want to sell that license to, are pretty clever, they don't feel like buying a license, and its evident that the don't need to buy a license to make money. And you and me are stuck in the middle of this mess, with ultra expensive HDMI products, looking all good, but are only half the product that you & me are looking for . So the cheap & difficult HDMI that does about half of what we want.... And expensive and pretty HDMI stuff that only does a little less than half of the other stuff we want. Seems like the full, finished product, that you & me would love to have doesn't exist. Or maybe I just never saw one. seems like something only rich people can have. 🤷♀
I didn't know Motorola copied Samsung dex, the touchscreen mouse thingy is literally the exact same
Motorola did it first. They had a desktop mode on the Atrix back in like 2010.
Motorola did it first. They had a desktop mode and laptop dock with the Atrix back in like 2010.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 I love Dex. Only issue is you can't change folder colors. Black pointer on a dark grayish/black folder background resulting in sometimes being very hard to see the pointer depending on the screen you hook it up to.
The small ones that look like a thumb drive also work well. They cost a few dollars.
I use an HDFury to rip out the DHCP so I can copy what I want. I may grab a few of these for other setups though.
Thanks! Just bought one off your link with a 10% discound.
Just ordered one. Thanks.
If the 4k pass-through strip the hdcp you might be able to daisy chain it to the other more expensive card that can capture at 4k... An experiment worth trying.
I ordered it, oddly Amazon's only delivery options were today. Now, in a bit, we'll get you after lunch, and just as soon as you get comfy in bed.
Got one from your link and am getting an HDCP error… even came with an insert telling you how to disable HDCP on PS4. ???
Yeah I have an HD Cloner Alliance card that bypasses HDCP and is actually kinda nice, but then I got an HDMI splitter that bypasses it. It blocks ARC and HDMI-CEC and I need to run a second cable from my Home Theater receiver to capture audio but all in all it's not that bad
I remember back in the day buying a DVD player and hooking it up to my computer's capture card because I was using it in place of a TV and everything was fine until I bought a DVD with macro vision copy protection. By then I was past the window to return the DVD player and unfortunately it wasn't one of the models you could disable macro vision on. Really pissed me off. This is a time of 15 to 20 GB drives so you couldn't just rip every disc you had either assuming you could even find rippers software. Kind of infuriating how I couldn't easily access the content I purchased
Bro trying to advertise a Motorola phone in 2025 😂😂😂
Awesome, I need to play some DVHS tapea
Would you please explain how you capture audio with this capture card?
Really? I picked up one of these boxes for $1 at a bargain shop. Had no use for it. Have never used it. But it looked interesting. Perhap I need to dig it out of the box and try it.
Nice to know, I have the exact same $35 capture device.
All my gaming videos are uploaded with that capture card works amazing I even given 2 of them away to content creators.
I’ve gone through 4 or 5 of these and finally switched to an Elgato
I would like to say that if you dont want to commit to one of these generic capture cards then you could take a look at the EVGA xr1 lite. The EVGA ones tend to go on sale for around the same price point as the one in the video and EVGA has made accessible a tool that allows you to turn off HDCP on the card.
I'm definitely interested in this. Done some reading and can't confirm 100% it does what I want. Anybody know if it downscaled a 4k input to 1080? I'm interested in using this for Hyperion / ambilight
Does it work with Roku?
Did you test it with Netflix and stuff ?
Or just get a splitter and get past HDCP on anything.
Hey, i have that thing 😂 it is great for recording, not so much for streaming
Good stuff.
can it record audio?
What the brand name? Model?
Dcyfol
It's one of those, 8 million different Amazon item listing, no name brand. Like using his link, I found the exact same one in Green (like that aspect matters) for $15 cheaper. I'm almost 100% certain it's the exact same item with a different shell.
I replied to you with the name of the company, but someone deleted it. Good luck if you even read this.

You overpaid for your HDCP box. I have the same thing for about 3 Euros from AliExpress. I bought another four from the same seller.
They are cheap low quality stuff but they work for all I want - to save stuff that comes out of my cable TV box in 1080 with foreign language audio on my Avermedia so that I can use an AI app to capture the sound and produce English subtitles to add in a video editor.
Personal consumption only and I am legally paying for the cable TV service that doesn't meet my needs.
Why? We emigrated and I have failed to learn the obscure and difficult local language.
So Motorola is coping Samsung Dex. I used Samsung Dex on my Galaxy Note 9 as computer at Uni may moons ago. Mind you 90% of what Dex used is built into android.
lol i just got 1 a few weeks ago lol thanks i was scared it was doodoo lol
This card is usually US$22
Too bad it doesn't actually capture, just diverts to USB-c
Something lost in translation? That's very obviously a usb3 capture card.
i think i paid 20$ on anazon
good, f hdcp
Just disable hardware acceleration to bypass HDCP.
who even cares about HDCP when you can just directly rip any bluray from the disk
