Restoration of an Old SURVIVAL Knife from WW2

- I felt there was something special about this old knife. But I couldn't imagine that under that thick rust layer was hiding a huge engraving on one side of the blade. Also discovering a handle made out of paper was shocking!
I managed to restore the blade, straighten the tang and made a brand new handle out of leather rings. As a bonus I made a leather sheath for this knife. Quite simple one with clean lines. Hope you enjoyed this video!

dude you are great
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Hi there and thanks for the video.
The knife looks like a traditional Finnish sheath knife, probably somewhere back from the 1950-s, if not from the 1940-s, I'd guess, the engraving on the blade is most probably from the maker's mark, but not absolutely necessary so.. Might as well have been added by the original owner.. The dry and smelly material from the brass ferrule is the so-called brimstone, which was (and still is, long as I know) used in the traditional Finnish knife-making..)
Thank you kindly sir for such a detailed feedback. I appreciate that very much! Take care!
How beautiful 🤗👍
Thank you! 😊
Awesome Video. . From the USA 🇺🇸

What a beautiful job, congratulations master...!
Thank you so much sir 😀
lookin' great, nice job
Thanks 👍
One more fantastic job.
Thanks again!
Sublime restoration. I cannot praise enough, your respect for steel
Thank you so much sir
Just cool!
You're the master)

Excelente trabalho,👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷
Great work!
Especially like the Discovery of the blade having etching on it. Curiosity has me now you know what it says?
Thanks Mike. Not sure what says, it looks like yiddish language according to Nino
Its a finnish traditional puukko from finland.
The writings on it, isakki järvenpää, a finnish knive maker.
My Grandpa would say "son a knife is not a prybar!!"

I love how creative your films are. You clearly put a lot of thought into every aspect of them, but I can tell you also give in to your creative impulses when your imagination comes up with something great on the fly. That kind of flexibility with purpose is rare. Thank you for your hard work here. Anyway, bravo! I see MILLIONS of subscribers in your future, you deserve them.
Wow, thank you very much for noticing that! Very kind of you sir! Take care!
Very beautiful restoration and love the custom sheath. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Some knife makers used liquid sulphur for adhesive filer in this area. Thanks for the great video.
I noticed that, used mostly by Finnish knife makers. It is a great filer 👌
Beautiful work!
Thank you very much!
As usual, another great pr object brought to completion with quality being first rate. Thanks for the video sir.

Thanks for the feedback
That is a finnish traditional "puukko" you have there! From finland.🙂👍
Thanks for the feedback
I almost dropped my phone at 0:17 🤣 Awesome work as always, really like the black handle👌 great editing as well!
Thanks mate, I am glad to hear that! Also happy to hear you like new handle 😉
Cheers
That bolster was stuck with a resin probably made with some sort of bakelite type of organic polymer, like the resin used in the old lightbulbs.
☺️👍
I'll reveal something about the handle. Material that was used to make handle is called presstoff and it is a form of artificial leather used during world war 2 i think. Anyway good work as always. Also presstoff is as you found out made out of paper. Inscription could be in yiddish which suggests that the knife belonged to ashkenazim jew(Jews from poland and germany are ashkenazim jews whose mother language is called yiddish). If someone knows better be my guest.
Wow, that is amazing Nino, I didn't have any idea. That explains a lot! Thank you so much for this valuable feedback. They used this papierstoff because of scarcity of other materials or it was a trend back then?
It was partialy scarcity of real leather. Another reason quite familliar to you is same as today, price of leather and back then leather was incredibly expensive so prestoff was used instead so you can call it the first form of artifical leather. Presstoff wasn't used back then because of the trend, it was used due to shortage of real leather because most of it went to armies so if there was a real leather avaliable you'd have to pay inexorbitant price to get it because there was so little avaliable to people.
I thought that was the case. I know how hard was to combine materials back then, especially during the war. The military was priority for sure. Always amaze me how people become creative and innovative in those difficult times. Truly inspiring. Thanks for reply btw!
Thanks
Thank YOU sir
Only just found you on RUclips and really enjoy your videos. Would love one on your workshop unless I've not found it yet.
Hey Gael, thank you! I'am planning to make one at the end of this year!
@FFD Restorations thanks and am looking forward to seeing it, I love your multi angle vice have been trying to find a good one for a while as it would help with restoring some of my grandfather's tools and a master carpenters tools he left me
As usual a superb job, your skills really are coming on in leaps and bounds, and the video quality is way ahead of your starting on here, obviously gained in confidence as well as learning and it is all really coming together superbly, such a contrast to most of the fakes on this platform
Many many thanks! Glad you say so, still there is a long way ahead and many things to try and learn. Take care and thanks for watching all these years! I appreciate that very much!
Lamentablemente no estoy seguro.
Pukko. Old, traditional, finnish knife.
Nice
👍
👏👏
That what you thougth what is that rhats a "hela" its holds together the wood to the blade. And i think its a martini or a Iisakki järvenpää, it would be nice if you could tell which one it was🙂👍 thank you🙂
Thanks for the info
👌👍🇪🇸🌿
Gracias!
Lamentablemente no
You can sand stacked leather, just like wood...
Thanks for the tip

And the handle is birch . That what "looks like paper".
Thanks for the feedback
👍👍👍
Was steht da geschrieben?
@@leonhartmann7973 I don't think this is a Norwegian knife. most likely came from Poland during WWII.
@@FFD_Restorations If we draw conclusions based on the appearance of the bolster and the pattern on the bolster, it is most likely the Finnish "Puukko". At least, the pommel of the handle eloquently testifies in favor of Finnish origin. I am not at all familiar with the Yiddish language and culture, but the letters in the inscription are still more like Latin. Maybe it's Finnish?
I agree, definitely has a "Puukko" shape to it but due to the lack of clear readable engraving it is hard to tell. Finnish knife maker would usually use birch bark to make a handle in layers and that is not the case here. I am not familiar that they used paper to stack handles in the past. I could be wrong though 😃
👍
I am curious about the chemicals you use in dissolving the rust.
Oxalic acid and white vinegar. Thanks fro watching!
I think around the '40's even some sheathes were made from cardboard.
Yes, that is correct due to the war and shortages of leather. People were quite creative with the available resources.
*Question:* why are you sometimes using vinegar only and this time baking soda + vinegar?
Thanks for asking! White chemical is oxalic acid. Also great for removing rust, and it does it in much shorter time. Choice depends on items condition and how fast I want to remove rust before I go to the next step of restoration.
@@FFD_Restorations OK, so oxalic acid + vinegar is faster than vinegar only, right? Now, will oxalic acid + vinegar damage more than just vinegar?
I used oxalix acid + tap water. Never mix anything with oxalic acid since it can be really dangerous! In general I recommend you avoid oxalic acid because if you are not careful it can be very harmful and dangerous. It doesn't damage steel as vinegarif you keep it for longer period of time.
Ha turn on CC 🙂
Where do you find your tools
Mostly on local website for ads
Good job, but really, you showed us the end result for only 3 seconds in the end. Let us see it from different angles and light.
Do you think this kind of knife would benefit from a brass hand guard?
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that. I think this style of knife wound not benefit purely because of the knife's shape that goes deeper in the sheath.
Excellent work 👏 👍
Much appreciated 👍👍👍

Can you please help me restore my grandfathers WWII issue Schrade/Cutco Jack knife?
Please message me.
Thank you sir for asking, unfortunately I don't do that kind of service. I am sorry!
@@FFD_Restorations How do I get this thing restored?
I’m not looking for total restoration. I’m just looking for it to be usable again…does that change your answer?
The knife can even be upgraded with pocket clip, etc…I just want to be able to keep his war issued knife alive.
👍

Awesome, thanks
this smell of matches because an alloy of sulfur and rosin was poured into it
☺️
Sulpher for a filler
It smells like it, but not sure what exactly it is.
It take a brave man to do a restoration while wearing white pants and shirt.
👊😎🤙🍻🇺🇲
👊😃
Lots of attention to details! Use of birch bark washers i. o. leather would be historically perfect!
Much appreciated! Yes, I agree! Next time 😉
You and Oldhand have amazing style!:)
Oh thank you!
