An all time hero to me. Then I found out my Grandfather, whom I only met once as a small child, was a wartime cartoonist in Australia. I am now pursuing my dream & about to ramp it up…as a Cartoonist. Do what ya wanna do - Be what ya wanna be - yeh!
I could not bear to fold them. I would gently shift them around and CURVE them so that I could see what the image was. Then lay them back flat. My little brother made the mistake of folding them a couple of times which of course led to a clobbering. Good times...
Al Jaffee was a part of my life. Seeing him talk and share his point of view makes me so happy that he was a part of my life. I have been infused with the spirit of all those artists and writers at Mad. The humor, the outrage, the ‘leveling’ ( I’m gonna level wit’ ya kid, it ain’t all a bed o’ roses) the boys drooling over ‘girly mags’….. Mad magazine was an invaluable education.
😢 So I guess this is RIP? No, he'll keep meeting deadlines and submitting fold-ins from the afterlife. Meh. 42 years of imitation and I still can't generate but one or two snappy answers of my own.
MAD was a constant, consistent great part of peoples' lives growing up. I think that they hit their stride from about 1959 onward, with the usual gang of idiots, producing great artwork and great humor. I couldn't even imagine MAD without Al Jaffe. Or Mort Drucker. Or Jack Davis. Or Sergio Aragones. Or Don Martin. Of course, William Gaines. I'm sure I've left someone out. It's not intentional. These fellows that you never actually saw were a part of so many peoples' lives. I remember the first issue I bought. It was a special, somewhere around 1969 or 1970. It had stamps in it. I loved super hero comics, but...something drew me to this. I read that magazine until it fell apart. Of course, my older brothers helped wear it out, too, lol! I can't imagine my life growing up without MAD. I loved the mag, and loved the artists.
Me too, one of my favorites "Don't you hate people who don't properly replace screw-tops on Jars" as a jam jar sails to a splattering and messy finish on a hard ceramic floor!
M A D Magazines kept me sane during my posting to Bahrain , 1963 and 1966. I even mailed copies to a comrade in Sharjah serving with The Trucial Oman Scouts.
Why doesn’t mad put this kind of content in their own channel on RUclips? They have one, and they only have 4 videos, Christmas trump spoofs from 4 years ago, and 3 twitch video game commentaries. It’s like they stated it two years ago and just gave up! I’d go watch their channel every day if they just put their comics on there with a voice, like so many others are doing, and stuff like this interview. I’ve wanted to see what Al Jaffe had to say since I was 10 years old. It’s sad if mad goes away, because of technical difficulties, meaning they couldn’t adapt, their easily adaptable content, to RUclips and the internet.
Oh sure, he's been drawing classic stuff for 7 decades, but OTHER than that, what's he done? Al actually outlived his magazine..aint too many artists who can say that.
Lived to 102. Made innumerable people smile. We should all be so lucky!
And of today he turned 100. Happy birthday, genius.
At 102, Al Jaffee has passed away. This was very good to sit and watch.
Dam another great man gone to the editor in the sky rest in peace master Jaffee
RIP Al Jaffee. Thanks for everything. Loved your work!
Loved his cartoons.
"Is this the end of the line?"
Snappy Answer: "No, this is the front. We're all facing backwards."
RIP AL!
RIP AL. Thank you
RIP Al. 102 years is a great life.
when he said "when I pass on to that MAD magazine in the sky" I shedded a tear
Incredible man, I hope I can get to his age with that state of mind!!
May I echo your words?
He has 100 years now
R.I.P to a legend

Thank you sir for so many years of Mad Magazine. Thank you.

I was a Mad reader in the 70s.
Long live Al Jaffee
j d , Late eighties into the 90s! My teen years! 👍
Mid 70's to 80's my peak-reading years. This man is a genius, artist and writer.
RIP Al Jaffee. Hopefully those pearly gates fold in, not out
His biography was amazing. Brutally dark childhood, really. Quite a soul to come out of it all with a sense of humor.
Along with Martin and Berg ( and Sergio!!!), Jaffee is def one of my favs.
Al Jaffee was really special. We will miss his great talent immensely.
An all time hero to me. Then I found out my Grandfather, whom I only met once as a small child, was a wartime cartoonist in Australia. I am now pursuing my dream & about to ramp it up…as a Cartoonist. Do what ya wanna do - Be what ya wanna be - yeh!

I came her after reading - in the Washington Post - that Al Jaffee has just retired.
I never folded the fold-in completely on my magazines. I took care of my Mad Magazines like babies as a teen! lol
I could not bear to fold them. I would gently shift them around and CURVE them so that I could see what the image was. Then lay them back flat.
My little brother made the mistake of folding them a couple of times which of course led to a clobbering. Good times...
Me too!!!! 💯
I'm so glad he's still doing this, and doing it so well. Living legend!
What, him worry? They won't fire him!

Thank you, Mr. Jaffee!

I’ve loved that whole gang of idiots since my first issue purchase in 71. Still have it in a archival bag.
😢
So I guess this is RIP?
No, he'll keep meeting deadlines and submitting fold-ins from the afterlife.
Meh. 42 years of imitation and I still can't generate but one or two snappy answers of my own.
Love the man. Thanks for all he's given us
I love MAD magazine! Only comic book that I read! Couldn’t wait for next issue to come out!😃
SUCH a hero. As a pro cartoonist, I have no reservations in admitting I don't deserve to sharpen that man's pencils.
You're a legend Al!
ONE OF A KIND!! thanks for all the great art AL. I think my love for art came from copying MAD's artwork!

I can't imagine my life growing up without MAD. I loved the mag, and loved the artists.
I loved Al's work too- but I think Wally Wood was the greatest illustrator Mad had.. His science fiction stuff is amazing!!
I love Al Jaffee's 'Don't you Hate....' series.
Me too, one of my favorites "Don't you hate people who don't properly replace screw-tops on Jars" as a jam jar sails to a splattering and messy finish on a hard ceramic floor!
All love...your work is legendary!!
Thanks for everything Al from the bottom of my heart.
And I forgot, he produced some of the best content playboy ever had, their golden age cartoons.
I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Genius.......I hold my huge stack of mad magazines close to my heart. They're treasures to me
This is just beautiful.
0:49 60 years is like, 6 decades!

Aaah. The OTHER Idiot! What a wonderful Free Spirit! At 70, I still love to read his work - since starting reading MAD the 1960's.
Happy 101 todayy!!!!!
What a boss!
M A D Magazines kept me sane during my posting to Bahrain , 1963 and 1966. I even mailed copies to a comrade in Sharjah serving with The Trucial Oman Scouts.

Mr Jaffee, I enjoyed your art for years! Thank you R.I.P. sir (Jessica ❤️🥰😍🌹)
hey look! the "Weird" Al issue is in the background
great artist
How much of a Fan of Mad Magazine was I?
I remember having an argument (age 12) about the Pronunciation of Al Jaffee's name,
I nailed it.
Al. In my mom‘s trunk I found an issue of mad magazine featuring a Grimm fairytale and it says that you made it
I thought the title said journalist and thought "yeah, Mad would have a journalist, to make other outlets pissed if anything."
Why doesn’t mad put this kind of content in their own channel on RUclips? They have one, and they only have 4 videos, Christmas trump spoofs from 4 years ago, and 3 twitch video game commentaries. If Al dies, who will write the fold-ins? Love you Jaffee!
Happy Birthday Al!
Thank you, gratefull

I didn't know that cartooning is a trade. Imagine that. Getting paid to have fun at work for so long as you want to.

He DID retire. He's still alive. Barely.
Does Al Jaffee intend to keep working ?
Oh sure, he's been drawing classic stuff for 7 decades, but OTHER than that, what's he done? Al actually outlived his magazine..aint too many artists who can say that.
