It would be interesting to see you testit from farther away the object to simulate a gas leak in a basement where you need to test along fittings to see as you get closer how far away does it pick up the gas.
Yeah I should have done that with the propane torch in the video… sorry. I tested it in all sorts of things outside of the video… I know that it was slowly getting increasing when I was testing it on the stuff I sprayed on rags as I got closer and farther away. The torch would have been the better test.
When I saw the title, I though what could be more budged friendly than Ridgid CD-100. Then I saw the price of that TopTes. Funny thing is that I bought my Ridgid brand new for less than $90. Anyway it's a good entry-level tool.
Yeah the prices on this brand are good for people who just need something for a “once in awhile tool” and don’t want to invest in something that they may use everyday. Not saying you can’t use this everyday, but if it’s for your job you may want something a little more robust or with more features.
@@MORGANSMaintenance Additional features are not that necessary as robustness. One nice thing to have in any detector is a vibration mode (constant beeping may get on your nerves). Ridgid is my second gas leak detector. Previously I was using the same model as our municipal gas company was using. It costed over $300 and needed its sensor calibrated/certified once a year. The calibration costed around $25. Ridgid doesn't need that (in case of malfunction a new sensor element is $20). It's sensitivity is from 0 to 6400 ppm. If you're not heavy industry worker/inspector that TopTes would be more than sufficient for a plumber, home inspector or just a home owner.
I don’t have their penstick version so I can’t really say… but it would just depend on what you do. If you need to test frequently you may want the pen to throw in your pocket. This one is bigger. If you want to be able to reach more places, the flexible hose on this one helps.
It picked up that r134 refrigerant? It "might" also then work with r22 r410a r407a etc. If it does, its a bargain and then some. I''m going to buy one just to see.

If it detects them, I have an evaporator with a known small leak and I know where it is. I'll test that as well to see f it can detect a micro refrigerant leak. I doubt it will, but I'm curious.

I also tried it with a few empty tanks of R22 and R410A where all the liquid gas was gone, but the tanks still had some vapor pressure. Opened the valve just a tiny crack and this device indicated the gasses immediately. It also picked up the micro leak on my test evaporator core. In fact, it’s just about as sensitive as my Fieldpiece DR58 which is about $325. If they made this with a smaller tip, it could be given a different model number and marketed as a refrigerant leak detector.
Hello. Do you know if it works in Sewers? Sometimes in restrooms there is bada odors and it is difficult to find the origin like: which is the sewer with bad odor? Or is it in a lower part of a toilet.. in which one? Or is it in a sink… or in any shower? Thanks
I haven’t had a spot to test it in those areas, so I’m not sure. I will be somewhere tomorrow where I have a toilet pulled laying some floor. I can let you know if it doesn’t anything there.
#ismellgas with a bunch of gas fire appliances at my work that I'm responsible for, finding leaks is the easiest PM task to do, if you have the right stuff. This detector would be a nice thing to generalize a location to do a leak test on. Would love to add it to my bag.
It says it picks up “some refrigerants” I’m not sure if it will pick up all of them. It really appears to me with what all I’ve tried it on that it picks up most things that are “different” from the regular air… Best of Luck on the Giveaway 👍
#ismellgas I just extended a propane line on a customers porch for a gas grill. I would have looked a lot more professional if I had one of these instead of just soapy water in a spray bottle. Side note I sold an old trailer hitch and picked up both the M12 SURGE and installation driver😃

I have a PT199 that I picked up after seeing it on @BobsPlumbingVideos Seems like a must have safety/diagnostic tool right alongside a voltage pen. I've already had to use it once, so as far as I'm concerned it's paid for itself! #ismellgas The PT520A seems like more tool than I personally need, but if I win I'll give it to a buddy who's a rural first responder. They've got a meter in their cache, but maybe he can keep this in his patrol car or something for convenience.
