How To Make - A Tasty Tangy Tomato and Onion Relish

  • Wow, this is tasty even before it has matured!
    Tangy Tomato & Onion relish - looking forward to trying this with a chunk of crusty bread and a lump of Cheddar Cheese!

    TANGY TOMATO & ONION RELISH
    makes about 1000ml
    INGREDIENTS
    1.5kg tomatoes, cored, peeled, and chopped
    3-4 onions, chopped
    1TBSP salt
    1TBSP sugar
    500ml malt vinegar
    200g brown sugar
    1tsp chilli powder
    2TBSP plain flour
    1TBSP curry Powder
    1TBSP mustard Powder
    METHOD
    Place the tomato and onion in a bowl. Cover with the salt & sugar and leave overnight at room temperature.
    The next day, drain off the liquid, then place the tomato mixture into a pan with 250ml of vinegar.
    Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
    Add the sugar and chilli, carry on simmering for 1 hour, stirring now and then.
    Mix the flour, curry, and mustard powders with the remaining 250ml of vinegar, then add to the pan.
    Cook briefly until thickened.
    Spoon the hot relish into sterilised jars
    Best left for a month to mature

    Looks awesome! I made a green tomato relish last year when the season ended early because of the dreaded "B" and that was pretty good - Like the idea of added mustard and curry -will give the ripe toms a go with it - Cheers Steve!

      Brilliant! Hope you like it. Like I said in the video, some of my preserves tend to get a bit over-complicated with the spices etc. No shame in using the ready-made ones LOL

      It has a twist on reducer to fit on the end so it will fill bottles too 🙂
      I used to make copper funnels, oil cans, indoor watering cans, toilet cistern floats and the like from copper. A bit of coppersmithing with all the different hammers and mallets. I so wish I had kept a few.

      @@DigwellGreenfingers I have 5 SS funnels about that diameter, 2 have the twist on reducers, that also have 3 mesh screen inserts, 2 that fit the narrow mouth canning jars, 1 that fits the wide mouth canning jars, but, they are all only about a third as tall as yours...

    That looks really yummy. I've just done some cucumber relish and out a teeny bit of mint in it - yummy scrummy. On a big catch-up today because of the tennis. The bandanna rocks 😁

      I was a hairless as I am now at 22 years old so I never had much in the way of a stylish bouffant! LOL

      You probably know this already, but if you use Amazon to buy something, have a look at the right-hand side of the webpage to see if there are any items reduced in price. I think I got £30 off the soup maker just because the box was damaged - soup maker perfect!

    That looks delicious, My lips are dripping 😋 Just thinking, if you only had white sugar you could add a bit of molasses for flavor. I think you could have a cooking channel on cable TV 👨‍🍳

      I cringe watching some of the cooking programmes. I consider myself to be a competent cook but their is one TV chef whose recipes I have never ever replicated with success. Jamie Oliver. Every one has turn out awful. I took his cookies to work and the engineers tucked in for their teabreak and every single one of them spat the cookie out!! Yet, it was made exactly to the recipe and with the exact same ingerdients!
      I'm sure he just make things up as he goes along!

    This looks wonderful! Where do you put it to mature? Water bath process? Pressure canning process? Refrigerator, or kitchen counter?

      Thanks for watching! It is kept on the shelf for 3-4 weeks before using and once opened I keep it in the fridge.
      The 500ml of vinegar is enough to keep away any nasties 🙂

    How would you store something like this ??

      I leave them on the shelf. They will keep for at least 4 months unopened but once opened store them in the fridge and use within a month.
      Hope this helps
