You absolutely hit the nail on the head with the supercharging network being 50% of the overall appeal and advantage of Tesla. When I bought my Model 3 18 months ago, there was 1 supercharging location within 30 minutes of my house. Now there are 6. If I ever had any doubts about the purchase over the last few months, they were extinguished pretty quickly by the fact that no other ev's come close to that kind of reliability and abundance.
Every electrical outlet in the world is an electric vehicle charging point. The whole topic of range anxiety is completely overblown for the vast majority of people who are commuting fewer than 50km per day (~30 miles). Huge range comes with the penalty of weight, cost and handling.
@@emmett3067 my comment was strictly referring to superchargers that can charge any model in full in about 40 minutes or less. A traditional 120 volt electrical outlet would take over 40 hours to completely charge a car.
@@emmett3067 when you road trip for a living, to the middle of nowhere, range anxiety is a serious issue. especially since running a cord at a hotel would be seriously frowned upon (keep in mind this is working budget hotel, more likely motel, not a swanky vacation hotel) on top of that hassle having to be a daily practice to keep it topped up
And then you have Ford that uses buzz words like "largest charging network." Where it's literally just an app on your car that finds ANY charger in America. So Ford did nothing but create a rebranded plugshare app and acted like they did something amazing.
The answer is obvious. Gas stations need to start having charging stations, which they are starting to. The first gas station to go all in on this will see astronomical ROI, but none of them have the balls. Its not up to the vehicle manufacturers; ford doesnt have gas stations. Gas stations are the most suited to deploy what you are talking about, even better suited than Tesla in many respects.
The problem will be compatibility. Gas pumps are a universal fit. If and when gas stations start including charging stations as you said, there needs to be a universal connector and standard for charging. So it doesn't matter what brand of car you pull up with, you'll be able to charge, same as with gas cars.
It's good and all but selling gas is more profitable than electricity. By putting electric charging station on your gas station you basically kill your own business in the very near future
I think the "charging plug" and "technics" should be regulated by law and imposing compatibility worldwide. The idea behind "Electric car," as far as I know, is to go green ... if we start manufacturing different "power bricks," it's counterproductive as far as I notice
And trains make sense, too. The owners of our infrastructure, unfortunately, will and do fight against green technology. They've fought hard since the 1970's when the electric car was first sabotaged. People don't realize that patents and the need for wealthy people to own EVERYTHING slow down innovation. This is why it's so important to have legislation at the Federal level demand a certain percentage of green technologies in order to get the ball rolling.
*Something like this is normally a federally run project and eventually private companies are contracted to complete work. Then private companies purchase the public network when federal gov rationalise that private companies are efficient/they don’t have gov funding to pay for it
@@johnbrooke6867 People don't realize that the the speed of innovation depend on them PERSONALLY, not some random corporations, governments or evil conspiracies. Companies will not emphasize innovation until people are spending THEIR OWN hard earned cash on that innovation. Why create a product that will interest only enthusiasts when you can create a product, which will be bought by masses... Kinda simple.
There already is a standard charging plug called CCS. Only tesla uses their own proprietary plugs, which is just stupid. Tesla also only allows tesla to charge at their superchargers and not other brands even though tesla can use others chargers.
Completely agree that a charging network is a HUGE factor when it comes to choosing an electric car. I've been watching EVs for years, but finally bought a Model 3 largely because of the Tesla Supercharger network. Fortunately, I haven't had any issues with the build of my Model 3 which was not in the first wave of deliveries. Maybe I got lucky. But also agree that Tesla needs to get solid on manufacturing.
Watch Sandy Munro's breakdown (literally) of Tesla's cars and notice how much better built the Y is than the 3, which was better built than the S (in terms of design and fit and finish -- the S is obviously much more expensive). I agree that manufacturing is the area that Tesla needs to improve in, and they absolutely are.
I think gas stations need to seriously look into having charging pumps!! Pick a large ones like Circle K and the 7-11's that are around all cities. And Tesla needs to make these chargers compatible and be the next gas station for all electric cars and profit from it as Tesla is doing well but not Great! Tesla always has been open about sharing the technology and wants other manufacturers to produce electric vehicles. Let's share the electric!!
Exactly, if every gas car had a different filling nozzle it would be laughable. If every electrical appliance in your house had a different plug it would be horrible so why are these ev’s not all a standard connection. Only doing the ev experience a disservice and prolonging the rollout.
Yes! That's what I've been thinking. IEEE FTW! This is technology that moves, not just a car. Once everyone agrees on a standard, things will take off. For some reason, it seems like car manufacturers think they need to invent everything themselves, in-house. It's such an old-brain industry. EVs could be here and fully functional already if they would just work together a little bit. Of course, Chevron and Texaco may have a hand in that too, since I'm sure they don't want the auto industry to change... Maybe if they develop the tech, and then they're the licensing bodies for it... They can live off tech-patent licensing rather than from selling fossil fuel... Again, they're an old-school thinking industry though. With both of the primary industries being close-minded and resistant to change it makes things unnecessarily slow and difficult.
What I wouldn't give for Tesla to completely switch to CCS2, so Europe and the US share a standard. I wouldn't even mind having to retrofit my car to use that!
You got it. In my talk I gave at last year’s Full Charged Live I talked about how Tesla will still thrive even after their tax credit is gone, and I said the #1 advantage of buying a Tesla is the Supercharger network. Range and charging is the key for EVs to eventually overtake ICE vehicles. 300 miles should be the absolute minimum for any EV if they want to be taken seriously.

I think ideally, any large scale effort too replace gas vehicles would have to come from the government. The whole super charger thing reminds me of the old Bell company and telephones. One day, the government is gonna step in an make it all work together. As it should. The goal for electric cars should not be profit, but saving the planet first. Profit can come after the landscape of vehicles has changed.
I could live with less than 300 miles of range if charging a car were as easy and fast as filling up a gas car and fast charging were as common as regular gas stations.
4:10 - 7:14 This is a really important point in my opinion. Imagine if every petrol car's manufacturer used a different type/mix of fuel and you needed to find a specific refueling point made by your car's manufacturer. It would be really really nice to see more compatibility between each manufacturer in that regard.
The price range is wayyyyy out of reach for multiple people in a country, we already have the Tata Nexon about 25,000$ and others from Hyundai and MG. If Tesla ever comes here, the price has to be wayy wayy wattractive to appeal to sell well and with import taxes etc. Make a car for 20,000$ or 15,000$ and then they have a chance
For most people it’s about affordability. The day that car manufacturers put out a $20,000 electric vehicle that can go 500 miles on a charge will be the day that gas cars die.
Bit of a nitpick but i think it’s more like 400 miles to charge that’s needed. My base model Golf TSI only gets about that and the fuel economy is pretty good comparatively.
I leased an EV up until a few months ago, and I can say that 200 is really, to me, the sweet spot to get people on board. Mine was 100 miles, and I had no where to charge it except home or the car dealership. I just used it to commute or to zip around for daily things on the weekend. It was not difficult to push it to that mileage limit, then it was done for the next 15 hours or so while it charged (I used the 110V charger, not a 220V. I wasn't about to mod my house for something that I wasn't keeping). However, with 200 miles, you could do short trips out of town on a weekend and still get back home fine. And statistically, most trips made in a car are pretty close to home (grocery stores, commuting to work, things like that), so with a 200 miles range, there wouldn't really be a fear of running out of charge within one day. It doesn't let you take a road trip, but I think it would be enough to get people jazzed.
The day that $20k will buy you a 500mile EV is the day that they will release hybrids that will be able to go 1500 miles on 1 charge + tank of fuel. Still technically a gas powered car. Why settle for 500 miles of electric transportation when you can go triple that with a hybrid.
@@NeoRichardBlake I think that makes sense if you have a garage and a home charger to connect it to. If you have to fuel up at public chargers, charging that often is a hassle. EVs need to match gas vehicles in range before people will be comfortable with them, with the current median being just over 400 miles.

I guarantee you the second apple comes out with an electric car it's not going to be compatible with any other brand charger and they're going to call it "innovation"
Yeah and they'll make the components wear out faster, but make it practically non-fixable so you have to buy another for much more than the competition. Apple is the worst business in history for scamming and ripping people off with stuff that doesn't last. They incentivize people to buy the airpods which retail for more than I bought my phone for and they can sell them for almost 300$ because Apple inconveniently has the charging input as the earplugs input so users are encouraged to buy the airpods as they can't charge and listen to music simultaneously. Not to mention they purposely design the phones to lose battery life quickly with only a short duration of use and age. Thus you'd usually have it charging for half the time and you get it. People who love figuratively taking it up the rump from a corporate giant favour that company but I'd recommend avoiding them. Buy stuff that lasts. I smashed my iPhone 8 because it was cheap garbage 🗑️
Wow, never thought I see the day that Ford boasts about build quality - I mean really? I own a Ford and a VW and the panel gaps and interior plastics/fittings are ridiculous on the Ford.
It also depends if you're buying the economy car variant or the high end variant of the same vehicle. I have a Ford Edge with a black and silver dash board and the entire interior is wrapped in leather and has no gaps, but the Edge SE is the economy variant and is nothing but fabrics and gapped plastic. If you want a great economy interior I recommend Mazda for their build quality always being consistent
The leaf doesn't have any thermal system for the battery though, if I remember correctly? So it'll always have more degradation and less range from it over time.
@@kirankumarsukumar that's brilliant if true. For the secondhand market, it's crucial for this to be known however. And I accept why they didn't do it, to save money. I get it.
That would be a nightmare! There needs to be a point where individuals or 3rd party companies can enter the game and provide charging stations, just like we have in the gas station scenario.

About your point on charging networks: In the EU there is significant legislative effort to make all chargers available to all electronic cars. That would be a game changer indeed.
The gas station companies should really move on investing on a universal electric car fast charger, otherwise when everyone moves to electric they gonna be out of business
Here in the UK that's already happening. Not sure how fast but I know Shell are retrofitting stations to handle electric car charging. I think there's a massive opportunity for places like Starbucks, McDonalds and similar outlets, to provide charging stations in their car parks as people can park up and spend in their stores while charging up.
@@wyw201 i dont really care if the gas companies go bust or not, but as a consumer having this would be beneficial for owning a electric car, for example charging would be cheaper the more available it is, i mentioned the gas companies cos them going bust is an incentive for them on top of everything else

Gas stations rely on volume and the money is made on in store sales, not the gas. You can only fit so many charging spots and now instead of having people in and out in a few minutes, they are tying up spots for 10,20,30 minutes, that's an incredibly horrible business model. Also there are millions and millions of gas and diesel cars on the road that will continue to be on the road for decades to come and continue to be made too. A more interesting question is how much it would cost to setup chargers and how much you make from them, I suspect the numbers are not great. If anything I would keep the amount of pumps I have and add maybe 5 chargers in the back, but replacing the pumps with chargers would be pure idiocy.
I really don't respond on topics I watch on youtube...but as a Tesla owner who has both commuted 600 miles a week and did weekend road trips and stayed a home during covid, everyone is overlooking the main reason for buying an EV....CLIMATE CHANGE. Supercharging is the number 2 reason we went with Tesla. Like Marques pointed out charging in a reasonable time with the range will change the mindset of ICE drivers. Our family went from a truck and an SUV (6 cylinder) to a hybrid and an EV. The hybrid is now driven maybe once every 2 weeks, maybe... We have drank the cool aid and got the solar panels and Powerwall as well...we are all in on saving the planet!
I hope they just don't bring a car to the market. Phones and computers are ok, cars? No thanks. May be they should get into other gadgets and that's enough.
Typically you know how far you are driving with an EV (or any car) and there are apps to see where a ChargePoint is. I’ve never had that issue once I found a good charge spot in this garage near my place and it was 100% free to use. Also if you live in a city, near a city, or near a campus they mostly have free charging in their parking garages. Car Dealerships also have ChargePoints, and some store parking lots. You tend to get used to finding them or noticing once you own one. There’s also the option for at home, over night charging. I only topped up at the parking garages etc. and if I would park my car at a store I’d put it on the charger if there’s a ChargePoint in the parking lot. The apps like ChargePoint are super helpful too. I drove an all electric BMWi3 2017 super reliable, but not nearly 200 miles per charge. You get used to charging it up every night.

@@hadhamalnam I'm not sure but I think the guy meant having the same concept of a gas station with different types of fuel, but it all just being chargers for different car brands, so there would still be no gas involved, but a Porsche owner and a Tesla owner could charge at the same location using the specific chargers made for their car.

I have been driving EV for nearly 5 years now. Using electricity most of the time from solars. I have to disagree with the range. Here in the UK 70% of people travel less than 30 miles a day. My Nissan Leaf with 24kwh battery is still capable of 70-80 miles which is enough for my needs. Tesla was always my dream car but recently just realized why should I spend 30-40k on a car if my daily commute is less then 70 miles. That's why small electric EV such as honda E or mini E make sense. Why carry around huge heavy battery if you only going to drive to local shop and pick and drop the kids off to school.
@@averageavg I have 3 airport within 60 miles and fast chargers on pretty much every service station on motorway. I know what you saying. US is a huge country
In America we need cars to go long distance because we live in the boonies. We also have a lot of apartment dwellers with no garages so 99% of people in cities and young people just wouldn't be able to charge a car, period. Anyone in an apartment complex would have to charge up once a month at a Walmart parking lot or something and be good for 30 days.
And there's absolutely wrong with this opinion. A person who is going to go to a job that is 15 miles away and goes to the grocery store and the pub and the gym all within 10 miles isn't going to need a vehicle that has 400 mile range when they just plug their car in when they get home every night. However, not everyone is the same. Some folks have jobs where they don't get to go home every night. Where they drive 100+ miles a day, where they have to go to rural areas, and there isn't any chargers to be found. That shouldn't mean they can't use an electric car. That's one of the issues that needs to get solved, if EVs are going to ever truly compete with ICEVs.
I gotta say love your video when you talked about road trips it reminded me of a road trip i took with my Nissan leaf about 6 years ago. LoL my wife and I took a road trip from Arlington Washington to Vancouver Washington to visit her parents. We figured we would do this for fun. I do love my Leaf though for driving to and from work and occasionally doing some food deliveries. Thanks again for this video.
It's actually not a bad idea. Tesla could produce and sell their own adapter to convert the supercharger cable to CCS, and have built-in 5G to report your vehicle/adapter credentials to enable billing for energy consumption. If the manufacturers won't pay to license the Tesla standard, then the consumer can pay the licensing directly by purchasing and using the adapter.

I agree that manufacturing is the area that Tesla needs to improve in, and they absolutely are.
when we talk about build quality, should compare with BMW for an example. Quality build last very very long.
@@XStrikeSuper BMWs are unreliable as hell
I think gas stations need to seriously look into having charging pumps!! Pick a large ones like Circle K and the 7-11's that are around all cities. And Tesla needs to make these chargers compatible and be the next gas station for all electric cars and profit from it as Tesla is doing well but not Great! Tesla always has been open about sharing the technology and wants other manufacturers to produce electric vehicles. Let's share the electric!!
I've seen like a dozen brand new Teslas with obvious fit and finish duds. That's something you'll never ever find in a Porsche Taycan for sure.
I believe to move forward, we do have to standardize charging stations.
I agree
When I can fill up an EV in as much time as it takes me to gas up, I'll consider one. Until then, fuck EV. Also, I'll wait for a RTR friendly EV.
In the eu we have them already
Exactly, if every gas car had a different filling nozzle it would be laughable. If every electrical appliance in your house had a different plug it would be horrible so why are these ev’s not all a standard connection. Only doing the ev experience a disservice and prolonging the rollout.
Different chargers... Imagine every gasoline car requiring a different brand of gasoline.

You're right. The industry needs to come together over a standard; kinda like what happened with USB back in the day.
The EU had something to do with that. Sometimes it takes companies longer to realize something can be good for them and the consumers.
This is a good point - how many years after an innovation takes off does a standard get built amongst all the competitors?
What I wouldn't give for Tesla to completely switch to CCS2, so Europe and the US share a standard. I wouldn't even mind having to retrofit my car to use that!

When?
@@NeoRichardBlake indeed. Range is a thing of the past. Of course we all like infinite range, but that commands infinite price.
Thats why the EU is forcing EV manufacturers to standardise chargers :D

Apple is the worst business in history for scamming and ripping people off with stuff that doesn't last.
They incentivize people to buy the airpods which retail for more than I bought my phone for and they can sell them for almost 300$ because Apple inconveniently has the charging input as the earplugs input so users are encouraged to buy the airpods as they can't charge and listen to music simultaneously. Not to mention they purposely design the phones to lose battery life quickly with only a short duration of use and age. Thus you'd usually have it charging for half the time and you get it.

"Are we sure it's gonna come with a charger?" 😂 lol

@@raheeb1 Seriously? Wow they're really milking that car hah. Teslas come with a canvas bag chock full of adapters, even one for a 120V socket in case you're really desperate.
I think people who own them don't realize how spoiled they are in a few regards.
Yeah it's a microtransaction to open your boot. You need 100 Apple points per boot open.
@@raheeb1 - OR you can use an accepted standard - as the Europeans mandate - sell the car with a standard plug or "Get out of here"... (I think many here are very ..U S A... U S A... well there are something like 7 Billion people who don't live in the USA, and have NEVER heard of 110 / 120 V AC - or probably Tesla... lol... )
@@kadmow Tesla's bag has adapters that are suited to the standards of the country in which the car is sold. So they can be plugged into a variety of sockets, like high amperage dryer/utility sockets as well as regular wall plugs. It also comes with a J1772 adapter as standard so any home charger will work with it (don't have to buy one of theirs if you don't want to).
If you want to plug into CCS Combo they have that and also a CHADEMO adapter for sale in Europe for 3rd party DC Fast charging.
In North America they only have the CHADEMO adapter for sale so far; Because the supercharger network is so pervasive there that there's not a very big need to charge at 3rd party chargers outside of your home.
Good stuff man just stumbled upon this video. I badly want to get an electric vehicle as a first car to get out of the city but the lack of charging stations make any kind of road trip impossible, and road trips are 80% of my motivation to purchase a car.
Why not build a “chargering station” that have different chargers like a gas station where there’s an option to choose from different fuels (gas, diesel etc)
In the Netherlands we have many charging stations like that which offer better charging speeds than the ones from Tesla.
Or why don't they all just come to some sort of agreement to use the same charging tech and network. It makes no sense if each manufacturer has their own charging stations and it's wasteful as shit.
Why don’t they make an agreement which the other companies have to pay Tesla to let their ppl use their chargers
@@olafkonny4846 This is what I really meant and thank you for elaborating that for me! To add imagine you are a businessman you build a charging station and then in that station you provide different chargers from different car manufacturers and branch out nationwide. In that sense Tesla can’t monopolize it. And also car companies can stick to their own charger in which could have advantage in comes to compatibility. Anyway, it is just my idea and also i live in the Philippines and we don’t have that problem here i just want to share my ideas cause i love watching tech stuff.
p.s. Happy New Year everyone!
Charging station compatibility: I'm reminded of the car charger adapter scene in the Black Mirror episode "Nosedive."
That was a real knee slapper moment.
What if all cars have the same charger type. Just like how we would love apple to get USB type c on all their devices.
Because money
Imagine an electric car getting change by USB-C
Because charging technology in cars if very quickly evolving.
Meanwhile Karens charging their Teslas with Anker power banks LMAO

Just bought a Model Y LR a couple weeks ago and got an October delivery date. Always been a motorhead and never thought I'd make this move. The Mach-e is at least two generations behind Tesla and I think the decision today is easy. Love the videos and delivery Marques, keep 'em coming!
It also make sense if you have 2 cars.
Anyone in an apartment complex would have to charge up once a month at a Walmart parking lot or something and be good for 30 days.
big range means less charging cycles witch means loonger battery life. make sense?
Thank you for the Kilometres conversion !
Apple launches car.
Our boi: I've been using this as my daily driver since 2020.
I gotta say love your video when you talked about road trips it reminded me of a road trip i took with my Nissan leaf about 6 years ago. LoL my wife and I took a road trip from Arlington Washington to Vancouver Washington to visit her parents. We figured we would do this for fun. During this time it took us about 6 hours to travel 215 miles in our normal gas car with no traffic would be about 2.5 hours 3 if some traffic.
I do love my Leaf though for driving to and from work and occasionally doing some food deliveries. Thanks again for this video.

No one asked
Your waves be kinda fresh doe 😳
Me too
Add “dongle” 😂 to make it compatible
It's actually not a bad idea. Tesla could produce and sell their own adapter to convert the supercharger cable to CCS, and have built-in 5G to report your vehicle/adapter credentials to enable billing for energy consumption. If the manufacturers won't pay to license the Tesla standard, then the consumer can pay the licensing directly by purchasing and using the adapter.
Great idea man
wait
That's actualy smart

Funny how some of these legacy automakers were mocking electric cars. Now they want to be like one.
there's plenty to mock. the impetus behind buying electric vehicles is displaying your sincerity to a cleaner environment. how can that be when you're adding to the emission at your local power plant to charge the EV? The logic is nothing short of juvenile. until environmentalist start endorsing the building of new nuclear power plants, they lack any intellectual credibility and intellectual honesty.
