"... You need some people not liking your work." That is the dumbest shit I heard all day . Let me ask , if you own a pizza restaurant and you took a shit on half your pizzas while the pizza restaurant a block away made pizzas everyone liked , who do you think is going to stay in business longer ? It's a no brainer .
He had such an impact on me when I was in Uni getting my design degree. I was searching for something exciting to create outside of grids and when i knew about David, well the rest was history.
I bought Mastermind because of this. The course is really good in terms of opening your eyes to how you can view design and creativity. Loved it. Also, i've known about David for over 20 years now since college and I would have killed for this kind of access when I was at college.
Interesting to see how Carson is still a 'legend' in 2021. I was showing my art-design high-school students Carson movies in 2003-2009, to get them OFF the computers and using their bare hands to create (& hopefully, their minds too.)
This sort of advice was true in the pre Adobe era when designers were essentially fine artists who were hired for their styles. Is there a Masterclass for the real world for those of us that didn't get in as Boomers before market saturation? Where we learn things like how to talk your client out of Canva? How to convince your CMO to stop swapping styles every time they see a new ad on the train on the way to the office? Sure things like good layout, scale, color, contrast... all that... will always be relevant. But I do not see the point in taking a class from someone who was famous way before the modern post 2008 crash business world where EVERYTHING is due tomorrow. EDIT: And to any entry level designers out there: there's NOTHING wrong with using guides and snapping to them. You set the guides yourself the same way you'd use a RULER back in 1972. And snapping to them is just a work smarter not harder thing. You still have to be able to design. Don't fall for these absurd Luddite platitudes.
You make a very good point. Carson has the luxury of lots of time to experiment, and be his original self. The reality is that us Graphic Artists don't usually have any time to do much research or 'playing'. (Especially working for small printing companies like I did during the 1990s. All jobs were due yesterday.)
"If everybody loves your work, you're playing it much too safe. You need some people not liking it, and then you're probably on to something." I've heard that the best books, movies, etc. are as much hated as they are loved.
@@BarbRogersMs.SolarTerror Not as many people may hate them as love them, but they can certainly hate them as deeply. I've been surprised to find withering pans of Watership Down on Amazon. For all their rabid fans, a quick internet search will turn up posts of elaborate reasons for why the posters hate Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. And take Pride and Prejudice (please). It's been deeply loved by generations of women, but I can not make it through a synopsis or even the first chapter without getting the urge to take a nap (it's crammed full of two of my least favourite things, small talk and literary romance). Likewise Princess Bride and James Bond turn me completely off. I never saw the attraction in either one.

Finallly a graphic design master class. I searched through masterclass and found nothing but now i've found it!!!
Domestika has got a few good teachers as well
What a legendary man. Met him a couple of years ago, and he said how inspiring it was, knowing people were still inspired by him !
When you throw away your guides and grids you can finally become creative. I totally agree with Carson's philosophies.

"never snap to guides" as he said that the design on the screen was literally snapping to guides
Great Inspirational stuff

Love David Carson but he’s not the right teacher if you’re new to design. Learn the rules first, then break them.
The first rule of graphic design is to start designing. You'll learn to do it better with time if you really are a designer.
Agreed.
