Select fire FAL's were not common in Rhodesia, and neither were G3's. Almost all of the FAL's did have the restrictive beak shaved off of the fire selector so you could move it to the full auto position, but without the correct internal modifications (which very rarely were installed) they still were semi automatic only. G3's on the other hand were rare altogether in Rhodesia.
The Australian army used the L1A1 during vietnam, which was basically just an FN FAL made to imperial measurements rather than metric. Soldiers used to field modify their rifles for fully automatic fire (as the L1A1 was semi auto only) by putting a matchstick in the sear/disconnect mechanism, or by swapping receivers from L2A1 rifles. They used to catch hell if they got caught doing it though.

The rifle has seen a good amount of use, as the lever is just starting to bottom out against the ridge at the top of the pistol grip. Love my Rhodie; the queen of my collection! And a natural choice for my primary floppie-slotting device, should things truly come to a boil here in the States.
