    Great job! As someone with 5 kids - I know how overwhelming the toy situation can get! We finally learned that the excess was causing us all stress, when our kids were a bit older than yours are. It has been such a blessing to have less. Honestly, kids are much more creative when they have fewer options.

    We have a bookcase in our toy rotation closet. I have a shelf for special occasion books, and the rest are grouped by themes. We pull out themes and rotate when we rotate toys. It's especially nice for the parents reading the same stories over and over to have variety!

    Declutterring videos are some of my favourite content. Because of you and your videos, I have declutterred quite a bit in my home. Something that you have said in past videos about declutterring really stuck in my mind : “I want my home to only be filled with intentional things.” When I heard you say that, something clicked inside my head and it really resonated with me.
    Now I’m very intentional as to what I bring inside my home and I constantly go back and revisit areas for more declutterring. I want the things that I have in my home to be purposeful and intentional - not just “stuff” because it’s the latest fad or whatnot.
    So thank you, Delilah for your wise words and your videos about decluttering/cleaning. They are often what motivates me to do the same. ☺️💛

    As far as playing outside have you read There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather? It's fantastic! ❤ You could just design your basement space as open space for them to run and play and keep it for more physical play than drawinf and things like that. NOW THAT WE'RE A FAMILY here on youtube has a great video on spending more time outdoors inspired by the book. Its great.❤

    You really should probably limit what you are buying if you feel like you are constantly decluttering. That is a LOT of toys.
    Also, once a toy goes in a donation bin or a “time will tell bin” and it hasn’t been asked for I would caution against opening it back up. Inevitably someone will want something even if it was never a favorite.

    I have felt a similar burden with our toy situation. We are about to welcome baby #2 and I struggle with balancing keeping what I know my older child enjoys now, trying to predict what she will play with as she gets older, and saving the toys our new baby may eventually want to play with too. It seems every birthday, holiday, baby shower, etc. lends to more toys, and it is overwhelming as the mama. This dynamic holds me back from the mental freedom of minimalism in my home, and I don’t know where to start sometimes.

    As an extremely anxious child whose parents threw out almost all of their soft teddies when that were their single safe area (and could name each one and knew immediately if something had been "borrowed"), but was respectful about making sure they were always properly put away in their *exact* spot and when I didn't love or want a toy anymore, I did remove it and put it into the give away toy box for other children or our guests' children if they wanted them before they were decluttered, thank you for honouring their autonomy and getting them involved. It's been been over 30 hears and I still have the 8 teddies they didnt throw out. I actually hid them after they threw the others out and still haven't gotten out of the habit as an adult. I'll never forget my mother pretending she didnt know what the three extra garbage bags they put out were and my father telling me that was what happened when you didn't take care of your things. I was 11 and my original wall storage hammock from when I was a baby had broken on one side and he was supposed to fix it. They were on my bed while I waited for him to fix it. And I know my mother was involved as the teddies saved were all ones her mother had given me except for the one I had since the day I was born. Obviously by this paragraph the trama still feels fresh. So really, thank you for how you are considering their feelings in these declutters.

      Ok… I need to talk about this because I am SO OVERWHELMED by the amount of toys but especially stuffed animals that my kids have. It’s something everyone likes to give as a gift and it makes their rooms a mess and we have such a small house. It literally makes me irritable to see clutter - and my kids REFUSE to let go of a single one. So how should I handle this without traumatizing them? They also can’t seem to understand keeping them picked up so… I can see your parents point in this 😂 but don’t want to do something mean.

    • @scholargrrl
      @scholargrrl 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Carazona My parents spoke to all the family and friends and told them no more stuffed toys. I hadn't gotten any for years at that point. They told family to put money into our educational savings accounts and friends parents were given a list of actually needed or desired items that were approved for gifts. Seems a little utilitarian, but we really didn't have a lot back then and we appreciated our gifts regardless. I think the majority of my stuffed toys were from the first 3 years of my life. Which is also why my parents stopped having birthday parties until the kids were 4 or 5 and just had family over for a meal. I don't know if maybe having them try a rotational schedule like she does would help? I can only speak to my own experience and that I think it's amazing that she got her children to the point of letting go. My parents used guilt and shame to make us let go of our toys by telling us we were being selfish, which meant we would go to hell, and other children were worse off than us and would love having toys, so we often gave our toys away when they did. It seems her children feel more secure in letting their things go and she is respecting their autonomy and I really respect that.

    • @Thisorganizedmother
      @Thisorganizedmother 3 месяца назад +2

      @@Carazona I would follow her lead by putting much of it in boxes in a closet and introduce rotations! You’re not taking it away and they will get used to it. In my experience, they will also feel less attached.

    This this is where I find a big part of decluttering is changing your mindset. When you put things aside, I find it’s better to look through them yourself (or not at all) when kids look back at them, I find they go, ooh I remember that, I miss it! Well at least that’s what happened in our home.

    Hi Delilah, you’re doing great work for your littles by helping them simplify and get into a habit of decluttering. I’m a mama of Four within five years, now ages almost 4-9, and I have noted that when my older children are done with certain toys, I don’t even hang onto them for the younger ones anymore. My youngest children actually have the fewest amount of little kid toys, but they have never seemed deprived. Things like blocks and cars can be used even for the youngest ones as “baby toys or toddler toys” since they mostly just like to chew and stack and push. Having younger children upcoming is actually a great excuse to let go of the baby toys from the older ones. Just a bit of an easy decluttering hack I’ve discovered over the years :-)

    Love the idea of a playroom with areas. What a smart way to develop your kids in all aspects not to access those only at school having such at home is really a plan. You such an involved parent in their lives, they will surely grow up knowing how to make their own decisions because you give them a voice. You didn't just decide on their behalf to declutter their staff you kept them in mind in all this it's so admirable especially with so many kids.

After 22 years of raising children and realizing how consumed I have been with moving, cleaning, storing decluttering , and again and again and then shopping and consuming more . It is overwhelming and in my opnion a waste of time. This is my opnion but kids are better off playing in the woods with a stick then all the crap I have bought them. Something I do is have them Declutter and keep them for a few months and if they ask for anything by recalling it, I don’t let them look into the box. Not even adults can handle looking thru a donate box and being able to let every item go again. It’s another opportunity to shop. Missing an item and regretting donating is another thing and if they remember within 3 months they get it back before I sell things at Consignment.

So I do all my decluttering exclusively then. I'm currently postpartum, which is even better - during pregnancy, I cannot even let go of a single piece of too small kids' clothes but now postpartum I get rid of double digit trash bags full of donations every week. We live in a small space with zero storage so after no decluttering throughout the holiday season, this declutter was so necessary

    Less is definitely more when it comes to toys. My eldest is now 10 and youngest is 3 and we've stuck with lots of open ended wooden things and a tonne of art supplies. We've also done 1000 hours outside for the last 4 years and this is our 5th. "No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing". We're on a wet and cold Scottish island and it can be done, it doesn't have to be wet and muddy play, even just walks in the park or a quick hour in the woods. Daily time outside is a must for us, my 7yo would spend all day outside if he could! Well done for the whole declutter. I struggle getting rid of books, we have 100s 😂

Also I was raised super Christian and I didn’t think I’ll be this way once I’m a mom but I don’t allow dinosaurs / fairytales / anything with monsters / dress up stuff like crowns . I don’t know .. I also like Montessori so I love Real photo books .. i think it’s also super hard when aunts and grandmas bring so many toys .. just in the last week they brought so many toys .. I get it they love them they think of them .. but I’m always the one who has to clean up the little items or has to take care of all of it .. I hate that!! Question! I've thought about trying toy rotation with my kiddos. And I wanted to know if you ever get protests at all from the little ones when things go into the toy closet?

    • @LoeppkysLife
      @LoeppkysLife  3 месяца назад

      There are a few toys that never go out of rotation because they play with them every day!

      My children will occasionally say that they are still using a toy while I am rotating, and if that's the case, I don't have a problem leaving it out another rotation for them (:

    You can also try to sell the nicer toys you feel bad about parting with and just put the money towards their new interests

    I struggle with the internal debate of: do I try to sell the nicer toys/full sets or just donate them. It's so hard because market place honestly sucks where I am (prince albert sk) it can be fairly risky and honestly a pain, but full sets of little people or car tracks or love every toys are hard to swallow to donate knowing they have some resale value..

    This is all great but what if your kids refuse to let go of a single thing??? 😩 I am so overstimulated by STUFF right now. I’m good at organizing and decluttering. My kids are not. We do the toy rotation, we do the wooden/non battery toys. But they have too much and people looooove to gift especially stuffed animals and they won’t let go of a single one. We have a small house. I get so stressed about clutter and extra stuff.

      I wonder if you have family who are somewhat regular caregivers for your kids? Could the extra stuffed animals go live at grandma and grandpa's house maybe?

      @@clare88 We don’t really have that but it’s a good idea.

    You did well making goals and working on getting rid of so much. It is good you have been aggressive with your decluttering, but perhaps you should not have anything in rotation. . just a few toys at once? It is stated kids only need about 12 toys and the outdoors, and that's about it.
    Thankfully, once they become teenagers, their toys are no longer really going to be around and won't be all over the place (but become more expensive depending on what they are). It is nice you have a playroom for them, but I think I'd be overwhelmed by the idea of a playroom. My older kids share a room and were raised as minimalists, so they only had some cars, a few bins of LEGOS (not a lot at all. . it was a small standing bin that was short and not too wide at all), and their trains (which they decided to give to a little boy at church when they were like 8 and 6).

    You seem to have alot of educational or developmental toys. Kids need limited and open ended toys that they can be creative with. Single use toys (especially large ones) like high chairs, cash registers, strollers, play kitchens and such hinder a child's creativity. Limit the toys in each category. You dont need various sizes and styles of toys with wheels. Stick with maybe two categories. Just like dolls and playing house. They dont need a full size play kitchen and babies, then barbies and barbie house, then little critters and that size toys, then polly pockets and their accessories... you get the idea. Stick to one or two tops. And to limit it even more stop the constant coming in of beautiful new wooden toys. They are more luxurious and eye candy for the mother than the child. ❤
