My father-in-law abused my husband verbally, emotionally, and physically when he was growing up in his home. He had also been abused and deserted by his own dad and joined The Church when he married my husband’s mother. I’m a victim advocate and when I married my husband I set up a meeting where they would face this abuse and his dad would apologize and repent so they could have a real relationship. It blew up in my face. His father did not remember it they way my husband did. He didn’t even acknowledge the beatings. They didn’t talk for a couple years. I learned a good lesson about timing and forcing someone’s repentance. Over the years my father-in- law kept going to church mostly alone and had callings with men who mentored him. He became a real follower of Christ. My husband was his only son in the gospel and they went to priesthood session at general conference together when President Nelson first became the prophet. They had a transformational witness at that session that President Nelson was a prophet and love was restored between them. Individually they were coming to Christ in their lives and there was an unspoken shift between them at that meeting that changed their relationship. My father-in-law died suddenly of a stroke a few years later. Although the specifics of the abuse was never mentioned my husband has forgiven him and he feels like repentance took place for him despite a lack of acknowledgment of the sins. The Savior orchestrated the whole thing and the two men partook of the offering.

I grew up on the 5 R's of repentance and this makes so much sense. Because one can go thru the 5 Rs and still completely miss the "relationship with Christ" part. Thank you.

This has been my favorite podcast from you guys so far!!! I absolutely love this definition of repentance; it's what I have felt in my heart as an adult, but is so hard to put into words. It's what the gospel is all about. It's what Christ meant when he said in 3 Ne 11:32:
"And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me." Repentance is part of the process of becoming born again, by which He removes our hearts of stone and replaces them with hearts of flesh.

Thank you for helping us understand the temple better. I actually just learned what the endowment really means in 2020 when reading Completing Your Endowment by Cory B Jensen. I loved how you added to it by telling us what Psalms 72 means. Loved this!!💜🎁🎉🙏🏼🫅🏻👸 Also thank you for teaching about repentance in 51 and the Restoration in 85.

I can't help thinking (as you were talking about Psalm 82) that if you were to put a period after the word 'arise', in vs 8, it would make for an explanation of resurrection. Verse 7 talks about dying like men, then we arise from the grave and then God will judge. Hope my explanation makes sense. Excellent work this week.

If you think the book of Mormon doesn't give a definition of repentance then you haven't read Alma 5 and Helaman 15.
Repentance is a mighty change of heart to where there is no more disposition to do evil. Yes, it is all about having faith in Jesus Christ sufficient enough to completely change your character. That is repentance. When one can truly say I have no more disposition to do evil then they can say they have repented forsaken their sins.

Show me where in those chapters it says, “repentance is…” You won’t find it. Contrast that with Alma 32 or Ether 12 that have “faith is…” statements. Even your conclusion that repentance “is a mighty change of heart to where there is no more disposition to do evil,” is not found in the text. It can also be harmful to a repentant person who still struggles with the natural man and therefore concludes they haven’t completely lost their disposition to sin. Can any human honestly claim they have NO MORE disposition to do evil? I can’t. I wrestle with the natural man every day; and yet I still feel the Savior’s presence with me. What if someone doesn’t feel that their change was a “mighty“ change of heart? What if it was a more gradual change, is it still repentance? The Lamanites in 3 Nephi 9:20 don’t seem to have gone through a “mighty“ change of heart.
That was my point. The book of Mormon illustrates repentance in so many different ways, rather than giving a definitive definition. In the church we have a tendency to teach a strict definition of repentance, which creates a checklist mentality. When people don’t think their repentance matches that definition, they really struggle. I know! I have talked to many of them.
Shouldn’t the Savior determine when someone’s repentance is sufficient for His grace? Or in the case of our church memberships; a Bishop? I love this statement from Joseph Smith’s letter to Nancy Rigdon: “Our heavenly Father is more liberal in His views, and boundless in His mercies and blessings, than we are ready to believe or receive.”
As I read the book of Mormon, I see repentance illustrated in so many different ways: from Alma and Lamoni’s experiences to Amulek’s “I did harden my heart, for I was called many times and I would not hear; therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would not know” to Nephi’s “he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.” When the Lamanites in Helaman 5 asked, “what shall we do, that this cloud of darkness may be removed from overshadowing us?” The answer was, “You must repent, and cry unto the voice, even until ye shall have faith in Christ.” Doesn’t verses 44 and 45 suggest that the Lord accepted the repentance?
That is the brilliance of the Book of Mormon. It illustrates repentance in the lives of so many different people who repent in very different ways, but all connect themselves to Christ and bring Him back into their lives. I can be inspired by each one of them without feeling that I missed a step.

@@brycedunford5459 l have been feeling so upset with myself because I couldn't figure out how to "repent daily". Having a mighty change every day? Going through the 5 "R`s" every day? I will be forever grateful for this lesson and teaching that I can repent daily by evaluating my relationship with my Heavenly Father and His Son, seeking light and pondering how to do that better. Thank you!

I’m with you, Bryce, about David’s exaltation status. I just can’t believe he hadn’t been able to sufficiently repent. Otherwise, what chance do we have? I think of the Lamanites that Covenanter to bury their weapons of war, who because of their many murders did not risk to wield a sword anymore ever. I think of Lamoni who killed servants for allowing flocks to be scattered, and of his absolute repentance. I know what it says in the Doctrine and Covenants, and I will stand with you when Joseph or the Lord explains exactly what it means. I love David and his pure example of repentance. Thank you for voicing my exact sentiments.

Mike-is there one book you would recommend to learn about first temple drama and all its parts as well as the coronation ritual like we’ve been talking about? I’m sure there are many, but I’m looking for one good representative one to read. Thank you!

There really isn’t one because of the amount we just don’t know. Baker and Ricks’ Who Shall Ascend? Is probably the best thing out there for an LDS audience IMO. I’ve always wondered if the Holy Ghost is heavenly mother. I’ve never seen a clear answer.

D&C 130:22 says “the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.” Heavenly mother most definitely has a body of flesh and bones. Therefore she cannot be the Holy Ghost. Furthermore, Nephi saw the Holy Ghost and described him: “he was in the form of a man” (1 Ne 11:11)

I love the book of Mormon. I have a huge testimony of the Book of Mormon that it is the word of God, But I'm tired of the Talking Scripture podcast talking about the book of Mormon all the time while I'm trying to learn the old testament. I know the scriptures are somehow connected but would be nice if you spend the rest of your time on the old testament alone until we come to that year we study the BOM.
    Please and thank you

It literally says this in the description of what we are doing this year: This year (2022) we (Bryce Dunford and Mike Day) are excited to produce podcasts that get into ways the Old Testament can be applied and understood in our lives. We will read the Old Testament with an ancient as well as modern outlook. We will also work to teach and explain this sacred book looking through the frame of the Book of Mormon, for we believe that the Book of Mormon is a clear lens by which to see the text.

@@talkingscripture I agree but you are the only come to follow my podcast using the book of Mormon too much to explain the old testament. Old Testament can stand alone as the same thing as the other three books. If you look at the come follow me manual they never use another book, like today's lesson only uses psalm 51 and 66 and didn't ask us to read the BOM. We want to learn more about the old testament story alone that why do we come on RUclips to listen to different come follow me podcasts to gain additional knowledge on the old testament I just lost interest when they bring up the BOM almost the whole time of the podcast. For me, I just turn to talk Scripture off and look for something else. Again I understand why you guys use the BOM but disagree cause the old testament can stand alone or you could use Jesus Christ all the time, not the BOM. I found my new favorite come follow me channel is UNSHAKKEN he only uses one or two BOM references but most of the time he stays with the reading assignment for that week. Hey just don't mind me that's just my lame opinion. thank you for all you do.

Trying to understand the Old Testament without the Book of Mormon is like watching a 3D movie without wearing 3D glasses. You’re just not going to see what the Lord intended us to see; mainly the Savior. If the Old and New Testaments were still complete, there would not have been a need for a Restoration. But we live post-apostasy. The only way we can get out of the OT what was there before it was altered, is to see it through the lens of the Book of Mormon. 1 Ne. 13:40.

    D & C 58:43 do you think?

    • @brycedunford5459
      @brycedunford5459 2 года назад +2

I think we should be careful not to read that as a commandment. If the pattern of the book of Mormon holds true, he’s not giving us a list of steps to follow. Rather, he is saying the result of a repentant heart will be things like confession and forsaking.
