It takes a strong person to help another.
Sometimes it takes an even stronger person to be able to ask for help.
I admit, I sure don’t like asking for help.
It makes me feel weak and inadequate.
It makes my day to help someone else.
So, maybe it’s okay if we make someone else’s day when we need some assistance and ask for help too.
I first heard “Lean On Me” in 1987 by “Club Nouveau”.
I never knew it was a cover song, in fact I didn’t even know what a cover song was back then.
I just loved the words and feel.
Back in the 1980’s if you wanted to hear a song (if you didn’t have the album or tape) you had to wait for it to play on the radio.
You could call the radio station and request it, and sometimes they really would play it.
In Milwaukee in those days, our family station of choice was 94 WKTI.
I think I even remember the phone number to call the station: 799-1194
I would call station over and over in hopes of talking to the main DJ, Lips LaBelle.
Once I actually got through, and I asked, “Can you please play ‘Lean On Me’?”
He said he’d play it in the next hour.
I had my cassette tape ready in the boom box and pressed record so I’d have “Lean On Me” to listen to anytime.
A couple years later, the movie “Lean On Me” came out, starring Morgan Freeman.
The movie had the original version of the song by Bill Withers.
I have since grown to love the Bill Withers original recording even more than Club Nouveau’s, but hey Club Nouveau, wherever you are, thanks for introducing me to this great song. Your version is still awesome too.
