- While not a full or even annular eclipse here in Santa Clarita, California, there were still some interesting views to be seen. Four different cameras were used, each running in timelapse mode...
In the first several sequences we see intense orange images filmed with a Canon SX10-is, using its full optical zoom of 20x, which equates to about 560mm (35mm equiv.), and a disc cut from an old arc welding mask as a filter. Three large sunspots can be clearly seen in the sun's orb, as the moon takes a slow, ever increasing bite out of the solar disc. As the eclipse ends just before sunset, the sun darkens and then finally sets behind a very distant mountain range. Digital panning across the large image frame and wind buffeting the camera makes for some interesting "action" in these sequences...
Next, (at 1:15 ) we see the sun's glare in a blue sky as the Canon 5D mk2 records the change in daylight level using fixed ISO, shutter and aperture. This sequence was filmed using a 17mm wide angle lens and Fotasy wide-band ND filter, set fairly low (perhaps 10-20) in its setting range, and includes the 1st half of the eclipse, from start to peak. An eclipse-shaped lens flare (an internal reflection of light between the glass lens elements) appears at 1:28
At 1:31 the view switches over to a GoPro Hero2, which recorded the entire event from start to sunset at 10-second intervals. Its automatic exposure compensated for the change in light level, but still managed another interesting view.
Then we see the view through a Canon 300HS at 1:41 which was set on fully manual mode to record the ambient light level change from start through the peak. This view gives a better idea of just how dim the sunlight became as the eclipse passed the 80% coverage mark. No filters were used on this camera, but the exposure compensation was set to its lowest level for the duration.
At 1:48 we switch back to the Canon 5D mk2, now with a 300mm lens and ND400 filter for the peak-to-finish of the eclipse. As the sun sets lower on the horizon you can see its color change to red just before it disappears behind the distant mountains.
We return to the Canon 300HS at 2:16 after a battery change, to see the remainder of the eclipse and beautiful sunset.
At 2:34 we recap the first SX10 sequence at a slower speed to get a better look at those sunspots. I was surprised that they were so visible in these images.

Thank you for filming and uploading this. I did not have the proper safety equipment for this and I'm glad to see this video.
Absolutely STUNNING!
I was mentioning to a friend just before this event - "I wonder what JCMegabyte will do with the solar eclipse?" Now, I have my answer. Your work is ever stunning, showing beautifully, the power and the glory of God!
Stunning, the sun becomes the crescent, as she passes by, and it goes down.
We'll have a total solar eclipse here in Indonesia on March 9th(2 days to go!), but because I live outside the umbral path, I only get partial eclipse with 86-89% obscuration.
Can't wait to see it!!
+Yohanes Christian I hope to see a full eclipse myself - must be spectacular! I hope you had good viewing for your event =) Cheers!
Awesome !!! Nice work ! John
wow..that was so great..we did not get to see it
on the east coast, so thanks for sharing , my friend !!!
I have always been fascinated by solar eclipses. Thanks for uploading this great footage!
Thanks for all your hard work JC! Great captures!
Always love your music along with awesome footage!
Wish it was visible in Washington state, but it was cloudy and too far north for me to see it. Thanks for the video. I had been waiting for this by you. Thanks again.
Wicked bro! As always. Nice choice of sounds too.
Great video and music !!!
Awesome!!! is precious editions dear!!!!
I love it!!!!
a kiss with affection
Amanda
Awesome video! I watched it in AZ live but this video is epic!
Beautiful. I loved it when it looked like an orange wedge.
Looks more like a cartoony crescent moon
3:10
Thank you very much for sharing this. Very cool. :)
This was filmed with a static tripod mount (no tracking equipment) so the images had to be cropped manually one at a time as the sun moved across each frame. It was a ton of work...
I heard that the next one here in the US isn't until 2017... Long wait! Thanks a bunch for stopping by! =)
JCMegabyte and here we are a few days away lol
chass ci foreal hahaha
5 years later
Fine video and good music !
Thanks
C'est magique !!! Merci aussi, pour les explications.
Tonight is A solar Eclipse In America But Here In There UK 🇬🇧 we can hopefully see a partial eclipse according to the news
KToyTV-Vlogs y'all wont even see partial America only
Superb video. Well done!
Very wonderful video!!!!!*****
Thank you!
Thanks man! I had 4 or 5 cameras out there and figured at least ONE of them might catch something good XD
SEHR SCHÖN DANKE UND GRÜSSEN
Yep - I'm still processing the zillions of images, but I've posted a few preliminary vids on the JcmdiStockFootage channel, and some interesting stills on my Facebook page as well :-) More to come!
Excellent captures of this amazing event!
Awesome , truly awesome, Thank you J. C.
Nice. There has never been an eclipse like this in my area in my life time. I liked the music for this one. I like that type of pulsing bass.
thank you so much for sharing!!!..stunning..
Thanks for posting:) Great shots!!
We didn't get to see the show in Pennsylvania.
Beautiful!
Just simply amazing !! thnaks !!
sublime !
WOW!
Such a splendid share! =)
Thanks again. Really awesome. :)
A beautiful job as always!
Excellent !!
What are we seeing at 1:30?
The white spec appears to be a really odd lens flare?
But what about the black dot that appears above the sun?
SnakeSSSStretcher That's definitely a reflection between the lens and external filter at 1:30 ...It comes into view as the sun angle nears the center of the camera's outer lens curvature. I don't see the black dot above the sun though.
It's there... just a bit to the left, before the shot fade.
SnakeSSSStretcher If I'm seeing the thing you're referring to - a very small object which appears for only a very short time, it's most likely a bird or insect which flew through the field of view and was captured on only that one frame. That happens frequently while I'm doing time lapse sequences and can be really annoying when the object(s) are very close, very numerous, or just seem to want to ham it up by flying right in front of the camera the whole time! =)
The lens flare during a partial solar eclipse will be crescent shaped because a lens flare is just an internal reflection of the sun on the glass of the lens. Since the sun was partially eclipsed, so was the lens flare. Happened to me today and I thought it was so freaking cool.
Awesome - that looks amazing :-)
Amazing compilation! Thank you!
looks like you had a boat load of equipment to shoot this one. lol. Good stuff!
Thanks for sharing my friend ;-)
I heard the eclipse was only visible from Texas westward. The Venus transit should be visible everywhere... The only question is exactly when will it appear in the sky over your area. I have yet to look up that info for Los Angeles, but it's probably easy to find on most astonomy sites. =)
Nice Track ^^ amazing ^^
We got to see a small part of it here in Houston,Tx...
Very good.
Thanks!
Made my day. :o)
Amazing.
Maravilhoso vídeo, ótima captura das imagens, é muito bom gostei.
very cool
Incredible
Maybe a solar eclipse here in brazil? :(
i cant wait to see one
Cool!!
Nice :)
Here in Pennsylvania we'll only have a .8 magnitude view of the 2017 total eclipse.
I've never seen any solar eclipse, so I was wondering what it would be like.
I hope to get in the 100% path of it and film the whole event... it's definitely a lifetime event =)
Theocracy Rocca I'm in Pennsylvania too.....Pittsburgh :/
Theocracy Rocca im literally so upset. i wanted to go to Kentucky to see it. but i cant. im in Pittsburgh too. :'(
Ryan Bandi uggghh. im in pgh too. im literally so upset i could not go to kentucky
i live in virginia so i will only see a partial solar eclipse it upsets me, but do i still have to buy eclipse glasses? is a partial as dangerous as a total one
I assume *up* was really *down* in this series?
Who's watching after 8/21/17
If it wasn’t partial
It would be annular
I think it was annular when it did the maximum
Cause the sun is is most likely to be a ring
Why do I have to live in OHIO, I totally missed this becuase I was on the other side of the State.
genial!!!
bises
I saw this at Feb 15th 2018 it was so lit
