The best thing to do is not wash your hair. You are lucky but it could have burned bad or your hair could of came out wrong. Dirty hair helps break through the hair. It also gives that protective layer of oil. The healthiest way to do this would have been on dirty hair.

Do NOT use 40 it will mess up your hair

Professional cosmetologist suggest to dye hair when it’s dirty not clean.
