This was a great episode. 3 PARA had ten 17 year olds fighting on Mount Longdon. And forty two 18 year olds! My dad was one of them. Incredible to think they were just kids really.
I always thought Graham Carter 3 Para was the youngest soldier involved in the fighting on Longdon, thats what he told us as recruits back in the day, he was 17 at the time, mad considering you are confined to barracks in NI if your under 18
@ETB9090 he may well have been. But yes it's unbelievable really. 17 years old and going into battle. 23 killed in action that night. Two of them were only 17 I believe

Until you have been to Falkland Islands you just cant understand and appreciate how harsh the environment is and how humbling it is to think back at what the Marines and Paras, Gurkas and everyone else who fought in the Falklands war endured in the yomps and marches over the terrain there. Even travelling in a 4 x 4 is hard down there. Total respect to all those who served in Falklands.
Deffo is tough terrain, wonder if onion range is still there? Remember sleeping in shipping containers waking up dripping wet with the condensation lol
I know one former Para (3 Para) was just 17 also, when embarking "Down South". He fought alongside three friends of the same age, who lost their lives (indeed, one, Neil Grose, had his birthday on the day the battle for Mt Longdon started (11 June), but would succumb to his wounds). My friend continues to live his life to make them proud and we visit Aldershot pay our respects, every year.
