  • After a Batley Grammar School RE teacher went into hiding amid protests against him showing pupils a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad in 2021, teachers will be receiving free speech protections from blasphemy claims by religious groups.
Ali Miraj spoke to to caller Donna who supports the protection for teachers, saying she will 'stand up and defend' the UK's democracy.
Caller Zalay phoned in next, to debate with the presenter on the presence of Islamophobia in the UK.

Give me a break, the hypocrisy is completely overwhelming. Israel and Palestine is a political issue and has been from the formation of it, and for the last 7 months the term “ from the R to the S Palestine will be free” is been called antisemitic. Yet he won’t say how anti democratic it is to stop that speech.

Everyone has the right to believe in whatever set of outdated nonsense they choose too & Everyone else has the right to call them out on it, that is true freedom, along with the freedom of religion comes the freedom not to believe. A democracy is based on the wishes of the majority & as the majority of people in the UK are non-religious be very thankful that you are given the right to belive whatever you like because not every country on the planet gives everyone such rights to choose.

The trouble is for many religions simply disagreeing with their premise is blasphemy. And when those religions have power that leads to repercussions. Being an atheist in some parts of the US is not actually dangerous but is barely tolerated and can cost your job. In Afghanistan it can cost your life. Time and place determine how dangerous it is, but at the core of organised religion is coercion.

I personally have no interest in seeking to offend any group, and if I did then I can’t complain about the backlash causing me to go into hiding. The teacher did what they did knowing full well the hurt it would cause but they chose to take that stand. It’s a sad society we live in when we get up in the morning with the intention to cause harm.

Wait a minute. The presenter leaves off with a clear bias between the two callers, he literally delegitimised his own point. In a democracy, your religion and faith (or lack thereof) should be respected. By stating they shouldn’t be respected, or for example teacher that may feel uncomfortable putting up photos of Mohammed or whatever should do so for a lesson, you’ve taken away the right of the teacher.
You’ve argued for a country where the rights of those to practice their religion and faith peacefully is not respected.

People should be free to voice their opinion without being insulted or banned from anything and maybe then opposing partys can actually have open discussions about their vieuws without EITHER side feeling opressed, wich is what u are advocating for. At least it sounds like that if you want there to be laws restricting a certain believe or vieuw that basicly says: if you think there are 2 genders you get cancelled or whatever.
