The first time I watched this documentary is when I was a sophomore at college. Since then, every time I wear down and feel exhausted because of the rat race of city life, I watch this documentary again and again, It helps ease my mind. I wish someday, I will have a chance to visit Satoyama. hopefully!
I have been there last year - I insisted in experiencing it for myself. And it is lusciously beautiful - you are literally in the world of 'My Neighbour Tottoro'
I feel the same as you, come to stop by to tell you that Satoyama is the name of “thing like in documentary, natural paddle field etc.” is not the name of village. When Japanese people want to mention something important, they usually have a nick name for that thing like “wabi-Sabi” words
There will never be another Sir David Attenborough! He truly has the golden voice! I love that he is still doing these documentaries on BBC! I love Planet Earth HD.
I added this to my watch list years ago and now I'm in tears on how beautifully narrated this is. How fragile the life of these creatures are but they still keep living. This documentary teaches us to be more compassionate to all living creatures and live in harmony with the natural world. Aaah I can't even describe exactly how I feel after watching this gem
*And what do you plan on doing ?* If you've done any research/have any kind of real passion for this you must have ideas on how to improve things using your environmental studies diploma, so please go ahead.
Wina B , Good fortune to you and Cody. The quality of life in the future of all peoples resides on the backs of people like you. Thank you and blessings upon you.
Watching this again. My 5th time. I just enjoy the sceneries and the calmness. So serene. Brings peace to my heart and mind. It reminds me of my childhood and how simple and pure life was then.
It is now March 2020 and, as the spectre of coronavirus makes so many people ill and fills others with fear, this lovely documentary has such a healing, calming effect on the spirit...
This was beautiful and so very educational. The sequencing of the lives of all the insects,,and the rice, was amazing and wonderful way to teach , or remind us of mans relationship with nature.
What a beautiful project I love David Attenborough... He is one of my inspiration that I am a voice over actor today Loved the music score... Soothing... Grasping and overall magical Beautifully shot ... The camera team has put in a lot of creativity and effort to find the best possible angles ... Amazing timing... Wow Thankfull to the director, BBC and the producer for this edutaining documentary. Much love ✌️❤️😎🤗
Such a beautiful video, showing man and nature in harmony, a truly special and rare scene in our modern times. Thank you for making and posting this, so inspirational.
What a blessed soul this farmer is, to lead a humble life in such a heavenly place. One with nature. His existence there serves only to culture, manicure, maintain and preserve a balance that respects and causes all forms of life to thrive there. A tradition unchanged in 1000 years or more. This is how man is supposed to live his life. Heaven on Earth.
Because of this documentary, I have a chance to visit “kabata” natural well all year long in Takashima. That the same day with the local Television had taken the documentary of “ A harie kabata”. We from Thailand place that we can’t preserve natural water all year long anymore, so jealously Japan have many places like this( Gujo Hachiman, all so).
James Merryman ...I am Asian to say the least. All I am saying is that even children in, Europe, the Caribbean; the children who grew up near nature have appreciated its glory and what it offers. Urbanized society or not, those that grew next to the wild have an understanding and a respect unlike those who only see it in the media, such as film or videos.
How beautifully u made it sir David Attenborough thank u and Godbless for the awesome video and thank u for Japanese people specially satoyama people who care and protect their land n nature...
For those who find this interesting, I recommend watching A series called Begin Japanology. It describes many of the unique and interesting cultural events and lifestyles of Japan, like Satoyama!
This is really beautiful because people respect nature especially the water. In the Philippines, a lot of people who lived by rivers and streams, they threw trash ad swim with it and fish with it.
If these documentaries are available in the US on a DVD, I would most certainly purchase them all! This is the way I feel humans and nature were meant to exist! :-) if I become an ex patriot, this is what I would love to live!
If I Have Lots of Money, I Can Definitely Travel To This Place. It's Like Heaven on Earth. This is The First Video That I Have Watched Over 70-80 Times. Very Heart Touching Video. Thanks For Upload This Video. Really Very Nice Documentary. 💖💖💖💖💖
how is it possible? 1 country, an island so beautiful with people who clearly recognize, respect and preserve it. And at the same time in the same country and the same people behave like animals, and slaughter dolphins and whales as if it is nothing.
This is so exquisite. Like many other viewers, when I am stressed and hard-put by life, I return to the peace and beauty of this place, by way of You Tube..and am so thankful I can still 'visit'...
Did a check on Google to match the pictures of the rice terraces. Could be a village in Takashimaya, shiga prefecture, north west of Lake Biwa. And it's less than an hour by train from Kyoto! Now perhaps paradise has a name.
@@eddy-ol1sy There are rice terraces in most rice growing countries sweety. The terracing began in the Philipines less than a thousand years ago as taro cultivation whereas the rce terraces in China are over 2,500 years old and in Japan over 3,000 years. Not forgetting Cambodia, Indonesia and so on.

It would be nice if there is a version of this dubbed in our language. I want to show this to the farmers in our country. They would be very happy to see this.
I never knew rice fields were teeming with life in this way :) I would have expected insects and maybe small lizards but it's amazing to see fish as well.
(40:14) No mention is made of some type of crop planted along the edge of the rice patties. Looks like something along the line of pumpkin, squash, cucumber or melon vines. Just another source of food for an abundant, wholesome, sustainable and peaceful life. If only we all could be so fortunate... Debatably, the only thing missing would be a minimal amount of livestock and solar panels. Probably already there, just not shown.
Rip for that poor water scorpion, everyone else can fly except him. Reminds me of that one Pokemon movie at the end everyone flies home except for Groudon, he gotta walk home. Even Kyogre was flying!
01:37 'This is a land that has been touched by people, yet the people tread lightly upon it.' A poetic and perfect summary of what the satoyama is.

I have no idea how many times I have watched it. :=)
When i need a peace of mind satoyama doc. Is always my choice 👍👍👍👍
I think a lot of countries with polluted rivers and polluted nature should learn from Satoyama. it is so very refreshing watching this.
"JAPAN ,one of the most beautiful country ,& good quality of gadgets ,with a beautiful flowers ",
Satoyama the name I always remember..I wish satoyama remains always same beautiful n caring nature ...

It is beautiful to see the people and nature lived side by side as the season pass them from spring to winter I love it and the music is so peaceful.
Yeah, especially the opening music.
This is stunning and absolutely beautiful. Such a great reminder of why I am pursuing a higher education in environmental studies.

Great feature. I like the way the narrator near the end described the water scorpion as "not breathing, not moving"... then it moved lol!
So beautifully shown the cycle. The voice and the background music so soothing. It made me sentimental.
the sounds of birds chirping makes me happy,😄😄
The simpliest life i wanted when i retired here in Japan. The Beauty of village life

Japan is a very beautiful country
I know that bug!! Those pesky lil things shoots corrosive acids on your skin! But they are natural pest control in paddy fields 😁
It's good to see that people only taking what they need.. while other countries exploit their nature for business purposes
Amazing & educational video!
