As much as I love my heavy music, I still love Ghost. They only get dissed as they look like a black metal band but sing in a poppy style. Incredible live as well.
Yes. But many younger metal heads surprisingly doesn't know their own history. I have come across some that, for real, think that metal was invented bu Metallica!?
It seem like it needs to be tuned down and have growls to be considered "real" metal. I find it kind of sad that some fans doesn't know what inspired their heroes.
Haters. Good songwriting, incredible performers. I'm primarily a death/black metal guy, but my grindcore buddies and me bomb around town in ghost shirts all the time. Good music is good music.

In regards to the "bubblegum metal" thing, my problem with that statement isn't anyone calling Ghost's music accessible and palatable. My issue is someone deeming themselves a "true metal head" in order to tell someone else what is and isn't real music to their ears. Unfortunately, metal has had waaaay too many of those guys in the scene for too long a time by now.
I love Ghost's use of harmony. They always have strong melodies, but their harmonies put the songs over the top.
"This is Ghost?" That's one of the things I love about the band, they change things up and play with different styles of music a lot. On the one side it keeps them from getting bored artistically and stuck in a rut, on the other side it also increases their reach and brings in more people to maybe catch the message. Works out great for everyone, and as a bonus has culled a bunch of the elitist/gatekeeper idiots on the last couple albums. An underappreciated track that's another style shift is Absolution. Very late 70s prog rock flavor to it with their own thing put on it, it's a great track.
I remember hearing this song before the album was released. Sold immediately. Elizabeth and Death Knell next.
I've said it before and said it again, GHOST knows they sound like a pop band. It's metaphorical for the way the devil would convince someone of something, first kind and soft and then when the truth is revealed it's real nasty. AND Tobias said himself he sings in that way specifically to contrast the harsh metal sounds in the background to his angelic voice. (AGAIN, the devil is an angel but is in hell type thing)... it's all about contrast, which is symbolized in the skull (black and white) and his eyes (blue and brown)
I love Ghost, in the beginning no one knew who they were and when they did interviews they "kidnapped" reporters by putting a bag over their head and driving them out to a "secret"" place. Nowdays they just have coffee like normal bands though xD Anyway when they were still unknown people thought they changed singer when a new "Papa" was announced. They changed in dramatic fashion on there live shows and it was always a big deal on forums "who is the new singer?!" Tobias usually changed his style a bit too and there is lore about how the characters are related.
He is also famous for doing interviews as the nameless ghouls since he wanted to have control over the band, so sometimes he used a "mute" stunt double as papa when he would be a Ghoul or the next papa. All to confuse and make the band more interesting. The Cardinal - Cardinal Copia or Cardy C is more of a joke character who dances and fools around a lot. Papa 1 was super serious. Now Copia actually rose into being the new Papa 4, this happened at a show in Mexico and it was a really cool moment.
Jumping in while the thoughts are still fresh. This is from the first album, Opus Eponymous. I found Ghost in the Papa II era song, “Secular Haze,” but once I found this song? I couldn’t get that riff out of my brain for WEEKS!
Each album cycle has a new “Papa” character. It’s just part of the schtick. Don’t take the satanic angle too seriously…the imagery and presentation is deliberately a lampooning of Christianity, and Catholicism especially.
Ghost fans refer to their concerts as “rituals” because of this song! You should definitely look up an early live version with the original Ghouls…look for the video titled “Ghost BC - Ritual Live Studio.” Super intimate performance with the chill version of Papa II, still in a mask, but without the makeup. Opus is still the band in a sort of embryonic stage, but the whole thing is fantastic! Glad you guys finally went back to the beginning, so to speak! Cheers!
I love the use of Hammond and Leslie on the first album. Puts an nice vibe to it :)
Their debut album is a masterpiece.
When I saw Ghost live for the first time in 2012, they opened for Mastodon and Opeth.. this is the only song that stuck in my head, their wall of sound was so loud and solid, but the melodies were sweeping and beautiful. Loved them ever since.
This 2022 tour Mastodon opened for them. It was great.
Ghost is one of the Best Bands to come out in Decades
Ghost actually has whole lore to it, in which you can find on their RUclips channel. They’re sorta like a soap opera rock back in a way, and it has a pretty deep story to it. Tobias does where masks when presenting as the different Papas, and current Papa in charge is Cardinal Copia, who sang on Prequelle (rats, dance macabre) and Impera (Hunters moon, call me little sunshine)
The story is basically of a satanic church trying to take over the world and bring upon the end of days through music. This song specifically I believe to be the procreation of the Antichrist, and currently there’s theories circulating about Cardinal Copia (Papa IV) possibly being the Antichrist

I was given Ghost's "10 Years" album by my local radio station KILO 94.3. I had stopped in to deliver a carload of toys for Toys for Tots and the receptionist was so excited by the sheer number of toys she gave it to me. I still love the album and play it all the time. Great band!

Tobias' death metal roots show up a little in this song but way more in Mummy Dust. Some people love this older Ghost and are not as into the pop-metal stuff. I'm one of these people who just digs it all. I love versatile bands that can write great songs no matter what genre they're in. And Ghost, or I guess we should say Tobias since he's Ghost, can make ANY genre sound FUN. Side note: atheism is not a side & definitely not a religion. Being an atheist means you do not accept the existence or necessity of god.

'So...You are a satanist!?'

Spot on about mummy dust, unfortunately the album version is a little meh, but once I heard it live it was sooooo much better.
I've heard of ghost a few times but never listened to them intill I started watching you guys. This is my favorite thank you guys for doing it.
Ritual was one of the first Ghost songs that I heard and it really hooked me.
Just wanted to also say that you referred to The Immaculate Conception intimating it as the conception of Christ. The Immaculate Conception is in reference to the conception of Mary, as she was born absent Original Sin (lucky her, huh?)
Anyways I think you guys would dig A Good Blow for a Day Job by Skyclad. It's basically a "sold my soul to the devil for music" song, but rooted pretty much in the folk side of their folk-metal genre.
FYI- "Nema" is "Amen" backward... that particular verse of the song before the guitar solo is basically reversing the Lord's prayer. 😈😉
I believe they say "nema" because it is "amen" backwards, so it's like everything in the prayer is an inverse of the original.
I really like this channel. You guys are really open minded to music. Ghost is awesome.
I think the reason behind the characters is because originally the band was anonymous. The instruments are played by the "nameless ghouls," and tobias played the papa's. He was outed in a lawsuit iirc. The satanic theme is a way to poke fun at established organized religion, Tobias isn't actually a satanist.
Edit: also, speaking of overtly satanic music, you guys might enjoy Zeal and Ardor. Kinda like old school spirituals mixed with black metal.
They are also very good with covers. Their covers of Crucified by Army Of Lovers and Enter Sandman from the Metallica blacklist album are great.
Their cover of "Here Comes The Sun" is so good.
The song was in 2010 on the Opus Eponymous debut album, so yeah, there you go!
I called this disco metal. Black Metal has dark/evil sounding, but them, it's just a loving satanic music if you will.

Ghost started as this ridicilously catchy occult rock, they have never been _metal_. I consider them as Abba Metal, just because they have such catchy melodies.

I love Ghost and I love this song! Secular Haze and Jigolo har Megiddo are also both really good songs . Life Eternal is another great Ghost song. It's a beautiful song IMO. You should react to these songs as well. 👻🖤

This song is actually from their first album called opus eponymous! Very good album and imo it's a metal classic. This and the next album infestissumam had a more "evil" vibe which I really liked. The opener to their first album "con clavi con dio" and "Elizabeth" are absolute bangers and they both go pretty hard. They are definitely worth checking out as well!
I'm an atheist myself, and I love this band's music, I love it, because it makes me think, not all satanic music sounds scary or anything like that.
I always call them the metal Duran Duran. Which is not a criticism cuz as you know, I LOVE Duran Duran 😊❤️
Idk much about Ghost, or when this particular song was done, but I’ve heard that their early stuff is a lot harder (?) I’d be interested to hear some old Ghost (if this isn’t)
This is old Ghost, it’s from their first album. And the people who say that Ghost started as metal and became rock are wrong-Ghost started as rock but has become heavier because metal is unfortunately far more popular than rock. They sold out by going from rock to metal.

@@ShanLH5 they aren't metal at all? I think it's rock to me, they've become way more pop sounding in the last 2 albums, I don't care though good music is good music, but they have way more ballads in the last 2 albums than anything before it.
I love ghost I personally don't try to put them in a certain group but I try not do that with most bands I listen to .
I listen to a lot of different types of music and I love a lot of different stuff that the "elitist" metal community would deem "wrong for real metal heads to listen to".
At the end of the day music is a form of art and expression and I personally think tobias is brilliant at writing songs and music that you could interpret as a funny piss take on something or it could have a deeper meaning and be a serious subject but it's up to the listeners to decide.
Ghost is a very theatrical band you can see that with the costumes and there performances and obviously there music needs to fit in with that I love what they do and I think its a very clever thing that they do ❤👻

The newer stuff has some awesome tracks here and there too, but I moved on. Early stuff still rips though!

This is the first song I heard by the band from their demo in 2009? 2010... I was writing for a few horror magazines at the time and a fellow journalist hit me with this brand new demo he had acquired. At this point you could talk with a "Nameless Ghoul" via their...(wait for it) MYSPACE page. Hahaha! Anyway, I was in fact speaking with Tobias Forge in retrospect, and when they came to the states for the first time we got to meet up with them down in the Bay Area. Good dudes. This is before Tobias fired all of them and turned it into a solo act but that's his business.

I love the lead guitar tone in this song. It reminds me a great deal of Boston’s lead guitar tone before it’s being overdubbed with like 6 harmony parts.
‘Ritual’ is off their first record, which is a MUCH heavier record than any of those following.

Probably so. I made that mistake with the Maxx. Ended up putting the wide kit on it and then V-2 came out. I'm glad I waited for V2 of the XMaxx. Well technically it's kind of a V-2 of the 8S

There's a live video of Ghost playing this song. Tobias Forge aka Papa wears mask and dark glasses while his bandmates dark masks and clothes. Bandmates are known as "Ghouls". Few years after this video, former "Ghouls" sued Forge. Doing their suit, Tobias Forge have to reveal his identity. Tobias replaces "Ghouls " as needed....
Cirice is their well known song.

I consider it Glam Rock and that isn't an insult. I love Ghost and have seen them live and have enjoyed everything they've done, but I do agree that calling them metal is a disservice to both sides. It's misrepresented when called metal and giving people false expectations but glam rock is a very wide range

This is from their first album and it sort of shows lyrically because the satanic lyrics are a bit more straight forward and "textbook" in a way. Later on their lyrics became a lot more sophisticated in the satanic references and not quite so literal and straight forward as in this song. The catchy melodies were already there though.

Agnosticism is NOT a religion. Gnostic and agnostic are statements of knowledge, whereas theism and atheism are statements of belief. You can be agnostic/gnostic and an atheist or theist at the same time. It depends on the God-claims! Anyway, great song and reaction - I always describe the style of Ghost as ABBA Black Metal! interpretation: christian dogma and basic tenets can be copied for any monotheistic religion, including one for Satan himself. a dictionary might use this song/band as an example for the word “satire”
i enjoy Ghost but i think they were really succesful with creating a gimmick based on a look and lyrics. nothing wrong with that. also enjoyed the band before this gimmick. Magna Carta Cartel put out a great album.

Nema is Amen backwards. Its more of the opposite of Christianity. Its like at the end of their 'Prayer" instead of Amen its Nema. Ghost started with the Papa's and they are all brothers up to Cardinal Copia . Papa 1 really old guy. Papa 2 was little younger. Papa 3 was 6 months younger than his brother Papa 2. At the end of each tour each of the singers are killed. They are then replaced by the new singer. You really need to watch the 8 or 9 short videos on Cardinal Copia. They are so funny. Always enjoy your outlook. Keep it up.

Atheist mocking religion and making it catchy. It’s often clever and the lyrics tend to have multiple meanings.
