Based on findings from both the Harness Crashworthiness Study in 2013 and this year’s Crate and Carrier Crashworthiness Studies, Subaru and Center for Pet Safety (CPS) can offer practical safety tips for pet parents traveling with their four-legged friends. Proper crate sizing is vitally important to ensuring safe travels, as pets should always fit snugly in their crate with just enough room to be comfortable. This will help minimize the risk of pet injury in the case of a sudden stop or accident. It is also imperative that pet owners secure crates and carriers for travel using strength-rated cargo area anchor straps and not elastic or rubber bungee cords. Pets come in all shapes, sizes and personalities, any of which may dictate whether to use a crate, carrier or harness when traveling.
The CPS is not affiliated with the pet product industry. The organization uses scientific testing and references Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to study pet products and establish criteria and test protocols to measure whether pet safety products provide the protection claimed by advocates and intended by the manufacturer.

I'm watching this video because I'm researching which harness to buy for my dog for additional safety. We actually got into an accident about 5 years ago. We were going 80km/hr (close to 50mph) on a county hwy and another car ran their stop sign and collided with us through the intersection. My 50lb dog was in the backseat without a harness, but thankfully I was using his metal crate (folded up) as a barrier between the front and back seat. There ended up being a dent in the metal crate from where he collided with it but he escaped completely unharmed, as confirmed by a thorough check up at the vet afterwards.
So I guess what I'm trying to say here is that a good barrier will probably be really helpful since it limits the distance a dog can fly, but a barrier + harness will probably be even better. Stay safe guys. Hope this never happens to anyone.
A crate is best. Secured, can't get away if the crate ends up outside of the car ehich means the dog won't be able to run away. But a good crate, like impact dog crates pr ruffland kennels
I wish they had buckled up the Kurgo harness properly. The carabiner is meant to clip to the back strap, not the metal part. The metal part is only for using as a leash clip.
This is terrifying to watch 😨

Anyone watching this is doing so because they want to know what IS a safe harness to buy. Why on earth have you not included this crucial information? Also I notice that the whole clip seems to be sponsored by 'Solvit. Have I watched the wrong video - the dog in the 'Solvit' harness would be dead as a dodo!
There is no safe harness, crate your dog.
@@JediOfTheRepublic Exactly. It's just criminal brands are even allowed to market them as a safety products. If those would be safe, children wouldn't need car seats. But Hey, they're "just dogs" . If the dog with a harness doesn't smash your windsheald during impact that's good enough protection (for the owners monthly budjet). But no way dogs could survive without seviere damage.
CRATES.
@@hellbound_hounds802 I understand this, and thank you for your clear, emphatic answer.
We adopted our dog during the pandemic, and shortly after, he was dx'd with heartworm. We attempted to confine him in a roomy crate, per the vet, but our boy howled and threw himself against the door. There was no helping him be calm in the crate. Please, your advise on how to help him adjust to this so we can use it in the car. Big thanks.

What actually does work to keep dogs safe in cars? That information would be very helpful. Thank you for doing the testing. Please give links to products that will save our dogs lives???
trixirita If you think a dog seatbelt will save your dogs, you might want to check the video about crash testing them. Not a pretty sight.
So basically nothing would work to save our dogs in the event of a car crash??! Wow this video just made me a little apprehensive about everything.. I take my dog everywhere with me 😿
I saw another video where they recommended one that actually works.
Trixirita, I'd be afraid that would be a matter of "you get what you pay for." I think these tests are done at 35 km per hour which is only about 23 mph.
nncnxx agian the weight is not accurate a real dog is heavy so they would not just fly out
Would have been nice if you actually said what was what or something instead of music the whole time
Amanda lol you couldn't see that this doesn't work or is flipping a dog just a normal thing in life?
She's mentioning this because one of the methods got a high rating for safety but they didn't mention the brand. No need to be flippant. Everyone watching this video is here because they care about pet safety.
I found the answer, have a look at my other comment below the video, there's a link
Rafał Dobosz ... where is the link?
Beverly Blair not everyone
Which are the products that rip dogs heads off and which are the ones that keep them safe? I watched that entire terrifying video and learned nothing.
Just FYI, apart from the dog not-dying in a car-crash, it's also important to put him on a leash to avoid him jumping out of the window, getting on the front seat/in your face and to avoid him/her getting stuck underneath a chair or near the breakpedals.
Conclusion--- leave your babies at home
except you NEED to travel with them sometimes, even if you are just taking them to a vet...
Conclusion, crate your dog.
That's scary as fuck, like imagine your dog in one of those tests
That would never happen because you're not driving two open seats around. There's something called AN INTERIOR.
@@MrWolfSnack Thats even worse dumb dumb. Your car basically becomes a blender for a dog.
Just to be of some proof. I recommend getting at least something. Something is better than nothing. I was in a pretty significant accident and I had my 40 pound dog in his harness. I have the click in seat belt that attached to his harness like a leash. I also have the back seat net carrier for the entire back seat. The seat belt and carrier kept him safe in the back seat. Without it he would have flown through the windshield. Its all a matter of circumstances but something is way better than nothing.
Something is not better than nothing. A poorly designed harness can concentrate forces and, for example, snap the dogs neck, whereas a large solid surface, like a kennel or a seatback spreads the impact forces over a large area. The thought that something looks good so it must be good is why the dangerous products seen here are sold.
This is so sad. @ 1:39 sounded like the fake dog made a sound. lol I hope to never to get in a crash with my dog in the car. I couldn't handle it.
It was the machine
I was in the car with my mom and I on the interstate. And a car crossed the centerline and hit the car in front of us. While I saw that happen I literally saw a dog skid across the road and run into the side of a car. The dog was dead. But it was so horrible to watch the people seemed okay but shook. But that poor dog. They had thier windows open and the dog not fastened in the car.
That was the harness hitting the floor,
This is an outrage.... I’m starting a protest for the safe and humane way to treat fake dogs!!!!!

Idiot
So basically the video shows that a dog in a harness will have a snapped spine, and a harness fails to protect the dog unless they are in a kennel of some kind.
Interesting stuff-AG kennel don’t work either because the whiplash would break their neck as well. The safest device right now is the pet Pack by Zugopets it’s a suspended seatbelt harness and it’s the only one that passes safety tests, that thing is 175 dollars so hopefully one day it becomes more accessible plus it’s only for small and medium dogs
@@rawrisiloveuindinify That harness is really dangerous for their spine health though. And if you have a wriggler, no matter how well you strap them in they will get out. One of my dogs can escape everything, and usually picks the most dangerous moments to do it. The only way to be 100% sure your dog won't get injured in a car accident is to leave them at home. They can't survive a dangerous crash regardless of how they're strapped in. It's up to us as responsible owners and drivers to try our best not to get into accidents. Thankfully truly dangerous car accidents are incredibly rare.
My solution is to keep my dogs at home 😂 Luckily we have a lot of space, with the distance between the back garden wall and the front gate being about 400 yards, and a dog park-sized back garden. When we take them to the vet we drive at the snail pace of 15 miles/hour. Takes a while for what would normally be a 5 minute drive, but relatively low risk of my dogs being catapulted from their seats. They also hate leaving their territory (our premises), so even walks in the neighbourhood is out of the question (I’ve tried with no success), let alone going on holidays elsewhere. They’re perfectly content with their 2-acre world.
2:56 this gived me anexity
This makes my heart absolutely ache. I have been suicidal before, and honestly my dog being in the car was the only thing that stopped me . I couldn't do that to him.
I pray you will seek out someone to talk to if you ever feel this way again
Painful to watch. Hope someone finds a great solution to save pets from car crashes!
So what is the result? What are the recommendations?
Realistically in a high-speed crash your dog is likely to die, with or without a harness. These are really meant to stop them from becoming projectiles injuring you, their bodies are small and much more fragile, plus after the crash first responders are going to be focusing on saving you not your animals.
the poor dog he was so cute his life was taken to short
now it might seem the ones that break are a fail but it may be better to break at a certain point rather than transfer more force to the animal...
I feel bad I was in our semi and moving it around the yard and my dog hopped inside and got on the passenger seat and I had to hit the brakes and he wasn’t ready and may or may not have went flying into the floorboard. (Scooter was okay)
what kind of seat harness was used in testing; was it the Clickit sport or the Purina Roadie or just the average cheap one?
The avg cheap
Back ground song its so sad..thanks for sharing..
For my small dogs I just put their pet car seats facing the back seat.I just strapped them to the back of the drivers and passengers seat I might be wrong but I feel it safer having them facing the rear.Plus I use seat belt harnesses.Thinking getting catchers mitt dog car seat it's installed facing the rear.
And you still believe this after watching the video?
This was so hard to watch. I just want to find these guys and say, "Just tell me what to buy before I get my puppy this summer."

What is the dog analog they are using.
Is it accurate.
The music they play while launching stuffed dogs across the room makes this video fucking hilarious.
It does make the whole thing a bit surreal
Really sad at 3:16
Anybody else see this and have the thought “Omg I hope they aren’t real dogs” then feel relieved once you see there not?
Cool, but you use incorrectly the first harness. Maybe if u follow Kurgo indications, the test will be helpfull for the owners who use it.
What was the orange one that didn’t fail?
Birdsong maybe sleepypod?
@@alynawatersmusic still would of broken its neck against the bag and if not that watch how it recalls back into the seat also can break its neck

Which seat belts are safest for my pupson? And which carriers are good that my pupson doesn't get spit out nor thrown out of his own comfort? What brands would you consider it?
Don't use harness. Get good cage
@@FINMrCurly This isn't exactly true because it leaves your dog vulnerable to second and third impact. (second being hitting a surface and third being internal impact) Dogs in a crate can basically be a marble in a box during a crash. It's likely a combination of harness and containment would be effective
Solvit aka "Kill-It" car harnesses for dogs.
Found while shopping for a doggie harness seat bet. i have one and we use but it comes loose. Is there a credible recommendation for us to consider? What is best practice (what is safest method ) with supporting best product considerations ... Looking or a consumer reports?
I'm looking for the same thing, too.
But! How much damage is caused by the pool? Neck injuries?
This video is next to useless in that it provides no information at all - a lot of tests accompanied only by piped music and no actual data! What was the point?
You learn from it an make your own decisions based on observation. Can you do that? Yes, you can.
Why is the vehicle moving backwards?
Watching how the weighed fake dogs are thrown around, even if the harnesses don't fail, is enough to never take my dogs anywhere ever again. Their tiny bodies would snap and twist and be broken from the sheer force of being crashed into no matter how secure the harness itself was. I knew before I watched this that it would worry me, but I couldn't help myself. Stupid cars are death machines!
This is why i started a company that focuses on animal safety in vehicles. We are also producing something similar to this, that every pet owner should own for their furry animal companions. Their safety means the same as your own!

Woof, woof, grrrr!
All cars have a front seat, for me you can not compare this with reality.
So the dog would slam into the front seat...
The dog would slam into you, other passengers and the windscreen with the same velocity as in the video. It's not just about their safety but yours as well.
What is actual speed for this test?
Monthatip Rakpan 1000000MPH!!
Kurgo and other dog breed harnesses that are meant and tested for crash safety have not gone over 25 to 35 miles an hour for our actual crash demonstration or test.
@@kateajurors8640 plus in this test they didn't pull the carabener on correctly
I understand it as if you use the right safety “for” your dog. Your dog will not kill you or your other humans riding the car with you. It is best to have them in the back at the car and see them as luggage (I have a dog and want him to be safe as well, but it’s the truth)

several of the cages crashed too...
Looks like the cage which kind of deflates like a suspension which would take a lot of the force from the crash. Hope you understood which cage i am referring too :)

Yes, they set it up wrong. If that was your actual dog you would shorten the length of the seatbelt which would make it safe for the dog

That was the one that got my attention, for sure. It looked like pretty much the only dog to survive.
How you know humans love dogs so much theu do crash test for them
I really should not have watched this whilst eating as like many of the toy doggies, a mouthful of bacon roll has flown out of my mouth at high speed, especially at 04:26.
It has to be said, I do have a very dark sense of humour.
Fly, Poochie, Fly!
Wow
Why do they actually have to make the stuffies look like real dogs it's so sad 😢😭
To try and upset the manufacturers into telling the truth instead of being bare faced liars who risk our pets lives with their bare faced lies. It's for effect.
I think they may have taken toy dogs and replaced their stuffing with something heavy. Easier to do that than make a new dog.
Just get an Incase thick cushion with just space for the head to be out but thick enough that on impact it would extend further then the reach of the head.. ideally on wagon using the whole trunk wagon space or one that can be locked by seatbelts in rear seat.
The safest way is a dog car Kennel.

To date there has been no animal harness or strap that has been tested over 25 to 35 miles per hour most her tested at the 25 mile per hour to 27 mile per hour crash simulation.

So in other words.. a harnassed dog in the front seat stands a better chance of surviving with an air bag??
No there's a reason they tell you to put babies and small children in the backseat.
Air bags can kill them.
Same for pets.
I some countries they have a hefty fine for pets not secured in the back seat.
Any restraints or crates should have passed some type of safety tests. Research is key. Ask on dog forums for recommendations and then compare to your research. Don't just take somebody's word for it.
Make sure everything fits your individual dog as well.
Is this trying to tell us that nothing keeps your dog safe??
Gunner kennels, don’t waste your time or money on anything else. If you want to protect yourself AND your pet, they are the only kennel that will actually do so.
