That goal by Mick Channon.....why is that skill somehow more compelling to watch than a lot of the incredible skills today. Apart from the goal itself, there's something to be said for a goal to be seen from just one angle, just one camera. As if you were there! Like so many classic goals from the 70s and 80s that are etched in the memory because of only having one viewpoint.
Because, back then Dave,u genuinely had the opposition making committed "X rated" tackles&challenges(that probably soundz nicer for today's more fragile viewer!)Football Pitches that were more suited to Grazing farm Animals! And a truly harder,Leather ball which was(and should still be) the correct ball to be used to play the game, not this silly"Lightweight"piece of crap, which apparantly allows so many players(of all standards) to perform all manner of "Circus tricks"? Ones that greats such as PELE,Cruyff,BEST,Maradona,(including so many fantastic Brazilians)Gullit,Baggio and so on, apparently couldn't execute.. But today we see these efforts week in/week out? No I'm sorry the "Paying Public"is being conned, because the major difference with today's game is mucho $$$$$ and the addiction demonstrated by today's players for more of the same and the availability of so much football to watch! But we do know that old adage "less is more" still stands up to scrutiny, especially in this case,!.And that's my case to argue why the game was better back then!..But i would imagine,u disagree?

yeah me too. the ATV version on sundays was called 'STAR SOCCER' and im still looking for those title sequences and music. this midweek match titles are great. when footie was magic. atvmidlands
I think the Anglia region were using the Midweek Match title for their local midweek soccer programme right up until a few years ago. I assume this version was networked. Most regions took Midweek Sport Special later on, but Central often used to opt out with Central Sport Special, which only ended about 2 years ago, and Granada started opting out for "Soccer Night" from about 1990 onwards, which became the title all ITV regions now use for their football programmes.
I remember being allowed to take the portable up to watch the Midweek Match, because it started at 10.30pm. Although this ones from Granada, I seem to remember the games were usually from the ATV area with Hugh Johns commentating. Often it would be followed by wrestling, a longer more serious match than the ones they'd show on World of Sport, but still with Kent Walton at the mike.
Strangely enough, this theme tune was also used in an American porn film called Frat House, made around the late 70s/early eighties. It was very catchy and I was sad when ITV decided to replace it with a new one around 1979-80. Anybody know who wrote it????
This could just as easily have served as the theme to any ITV sitcom, possibly starring Jack Smethurst or Alfie Bass. In fact all ITV football themes sounded like this pre-Jeff Wayne, I've got the 1978 WC theme and compared to BBC's latin guitar effort, it's all beer and chips and Harold Wilson lol.

Fantastic - great memories! I remember the game too, supersub David Fairclough getting the winner!
This is called "International Event" by Keith Mansfield from an old KPM Library Production Album KPM1098 called Progress And Prestige, Volume 2.
Yes, but this isn't the original version of the tune.
