This one really got me. The whole experience was, for me, thought provoking and a bit surreal. Thinking of the people who lived and worked there in Pyramiden. Found myself shaking my head thinking of their lives and the lives of people all over the world. Kika in the silks at the end, as a "wrap up" harhar, was perfect and suddenly had a tear in my eye thinking "How could Dan not love this woman!" You kiddos are wonderful.
And what you didn't see is the reality of the town for most of the miners. They were prisoners of the Gulag, but all the prison barracks, guard towers, and barbed wire fences were removed in the 1980s. What's left is the guard housing and office buildings, and the production facilities.
@@kriss23 pretty much every polar mining and logging operation was part of the Kolyma at some point. And yes, pretty much every Gulag camp was dismantled, the evidence of it existing destroyed, in the 1980s (and sometimes before).

Back then the tsarist empire sold Alaska to the Amaricans, which was basically a gift to strenghten the Americans against the Brittish and not lose this land to the Brittish empire expanding towards the Russian borders. In both world wars the two nations were allies. Some overshadowing was when jewish-american bankers financed the Russian revolution in 1917 to overthrow the tsar. (The communists repaid them by 50 tons of gold that they took from the reserves.) Also the cold war when both systems stood against each other. But even after the dissolvement of the soviet union we tried to copy your democratic system and lifestyle during the 90's. Which then led to the collapse of the state and new problems evolving like the NATO expanding near our borders. So there is a lack of trust, but when we have a common enemy we tend to work together.

They want to control the world which they are now working on. Not one doubt our gov is one of the most corrupt but we can't do anything about it. Our military complex and our oligarchs are now in charge of us. The only thing we have left for protection is the second amendment which they keep trying to take way. We better stand up! Doesn't NATO have restrictions from expanding closer to the Russian border? Is NATO breaking the treaties? I do agree with restrictions too. We wouldn't get the truth from any of our media here.

Unbelievably Fantastic! Agree, your editing, cinematography to me was like National Geographic. The colors of the waters, the mountain ranges, the painted and rusted steel and the buildings were gorgeous! I could see this in an oil painting. AND TO END THIS VIDEO with dropping red drapes, seeing the wind gently taking hold of their length and to see the strength and beauty of your aero-dynamic dance in that environment.... truly magnificent! This step's subject, Pyramiden, and being on land, seem to have inspired you into making one of your best videos, technically-speaking. Do you remember the step when you showed how the two of you can make a hiking video which appears to have been made by a whole film crew? Was it in Canada? This one is even more complex! The shooting and the editing are incredible; way above a "normal" RUclips channel. It's a great example of why, in your survey, most patrons replied that they don't really need treats other than your videos. Bravo for the great work!

I really think that this is perhaps the best video you have made. The photography was so professional and the story telling was wonderful. What an amazing journey the two of you are on. You have made an old ‘Sea Captain’ who lived much of his life in Russia very happy.
Having worked in many mines, including Coal Mines, I learned that equipment was rarely idle. What you did not see in your trek up those stairs were the Cars that ran on the Rail Tracks. The workers would Not have to climb those steps everyday. They would have rode to the top and down again, in the trams. Had you reached the top, you might have seen a huge Cable Winch, very common in mines. With several cars filled with ore, there would be at least one to carry workers, going up or down and cars filled with supplies, like timbers for the mine shafts. One other little point. There would probably be a Drift, at ground level, where worker would enter and leave the mine. There is always more that one point of egress, in case of an accident. Those stairs were probably such a means of getting out of the mine from higher levels... I'll shut-up now...
@@ianbardon8581 Had the kids timed their climb, it would have been lunch time before they reached the top... At that rate, not much coal would get mined... lol In the mines where I worked (Shifts), We left our tools for the next shift. However, it was a 20 minute walk into the mine, to the "Face", where the mining was being done... Then the ore was shuttled out of the mine, first by an underground earth mover, then by conveyor belt... Keep in mind that Russians and Norwegians are not stupid people and would have the best and most up-to-date mining equipment available, for the time... I'll shut-up again :-)

I'm in the energy business too, I used to work on drilling rigs for oil and natural gas. Most people don't have a clue about how that works either. I couldn't imaging working in a deep underground tunnel ! I get claustrophobic just thinking about it.
@@wh8085 I live in Alberta, Canada. I grew up on the Rigs and later I built them as a Welder and Steel Fitter. Both mining and the Rigs are hard and dangerous work, but I think the Rigs take the prize... Mind you, with everything automated today, they are a lot safer than when I was a Roughneck and Derrick. We didn't have "Power tongs". We spun chain to make connections... I'll shut-up now... :-)

Of all channels out there, you make me the most jealous of your adventures but also provide a perfect balance of what I enjoy and anticipate watching on RUclips, usually laying in bed early in the morning or late at nite when wifey is fast asleep! Fun thing, when I was in a university we had to make a game demo as a project over a semester. When someone from my group found this town on the map and read about its history, we decided to make the game a tactical game where you would bring in the squag of mercernaries to Pyramiden on order from a person who bought it up and set up a research facility there. The backstory was, that the miners struck some weird substance with mutagenic properties while extracting coal, and that the city became a secret Soviet research facility, only to be scrapped due to immense danger that the substance posed and the fall of the Soviet Union. A former corrupt scientist bought the complex with terrorist money by promising them a bioweapon, but his project started to run late, prompting an assault from the groups that lend him the money. During this assualt the safety mechanisms in the facility got damaged, causing the mutagen outbreak. Our mercernaries started the game by getting their helicopter shot down by unknown entity and having to regroup in the storm. After the team joined up, they started encountering the enemies, but to their surprise they weren't alive anymore. Yes, we made a zombie themed tactical squad game set in Pyramiden. Or rather a demo. It wasn't very good, but we still managed to be rated as the best game that year.I guess the magic of the place helped.
OMG! I should not read through the comments before I comment. Everyone has described this step (episode) so well. I just love how you edit us through the story of Pyramiden. And then to end with that phenomenal Aerial Silk exercise and the way you edited it is just mind boggling to me, and I have done some editing.
The almost abrupt fade into the striking sound of the silks unraveling, made me wonder harder in anticipation of what you would offer next in the flow. So inspirational to think, move, and record that encapsulated response to Priamids standing remains. Thank you both.

That is the moment when I usually just feel - blown away....This week's episode had many blow away moments; However the point where Kika rolls out her silks and starts doing her dance brought me to tears. Hi Guys, Thanks for another great video... about the mine carts, there are 2 tracks. You attach your full mine cart to a cable that goes around a pully at the top of the system which then connects to the empty mine cart/s on the other track.... 1 track brings the full cart down, the other brings the empty's up. The empty carts coming up - help to slow the full carts coming down.
You all get excellent kudos on your videography -- but your audio work is something else too. It's immersive when you have sounds of the footsteps on the faraway shots. Good job... great job
That first segment sailing to your destination was Cinematographically Golden!!❤ Not just the vistas and mountains but more so I thought to vignettes of moments ... and you know those dancing several leaping wavetop instances were the top of the top for me anyway. Ohh but you weren't done just yet were you? Just a marvelous piece of Art ... historic and distant and beautiful in its own right.
This form of activity is called "Urbex" as far I can remember ;-) And Btw, As a citizen of a communist (not by choice) country in Eastern Europe, I spent my young years in a very similar environment. Monuments of Lenin everywhere, propaganda inscriptions on every wall with the slogans of peace in the world ... The same interior design, furniture, (especially the upholstered armchairs!!!) in the canteen for employees / students. A gym, identical to the one I had at school. Sleepy atmosphere, nobody is in a hurry because there is nothing to rush to. For a moment I had the strange feeling that I even knew a waitress who served you drinks ... Finally, training on silk in a post-apocalyptic scenery. You have outdone yourself :-)
Unfortunately here the US that same ideology is being used by these groups have publicly stated they use Marxist teaching as their guidelines. Going back to the 50s -70s USSR. I am leaving

Wow! You have to watch this video until the end. I was almost not going to watch this video at all, but I sure am glad I did. This was fantastic. I want to go to this place myself now. This was really well made too. Top notch film making, you would swear they had a film crew to make this video.
It’s dangerous and being too sore can get you killed. So as advice ride a slow reliable semi heavy motorcycle like a Honda shadow 600 or something (mines 25 years old and I don’t have a car) building body strength and resilience is my point. If you really ride and adapt, you can survive sailing…So I have to do my part, then I’m outta here. My biggest problem is misunderstanding the laws codes and regs. It’s a pain but maybe not so bad. I wish I could bring my bike with me. Aircraft carriers can carry aircraft so why not? Good luck to you tho 🍀.

You guys are such incredible sailors, DIY experts, craftspeople, explorers, environmental advocates, and videographers that I keep forgetting that you are degreed architects. At 18:53 that was a re-breather - the soviets were pretty big on re-breather technology (like an aqualung but produces almost no bubbles because the air is re-circulated adding a little oxygen and scrubbing the co2). You can still buy Russian made rebreathers that look like that - but you only use them if you are both *really* skilled and *really* suicidal. Fantastic video as usual.

That was one of the most captivating videos I've ever seen. What a delight to be able to explore places like this with you, because I know the chances of my being able to do so myself in person are tiny and diminishing as I age. Doing your silks at the end, in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, was a master stroke. The weirdest thing is, being in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm watching this during some of the shortest days of the year, while you filmed this presumably last summer, during the white nights. It almost makes me forget the dark days I am in the midst of right now in rainy November Victoria, BC.

Dan and Kika have a unique talent in that they talk to the camera as if it (us) were long time best friends. They only know me as a click on their videos but are the kind of people I wish I had as long time best friends. Watching the silk dancing I thought if Kika challenged me to an arm wrestle I would immediately say "You win!" so I didn't get hurt.
I do not comment typically, however this video is by far some of your best work. The skill with the silk at the end sent it over the top. Now get out of the cold, head South I'm too cold and I'm not putting on another layer, need some hot sun and Caribbean vibes. lol

My oldest daughter does silks, lyra and seer wheel as well as other circus arts... Those moments when you are able to perform silks in the craziest environments are just stunning. I work with recycled timber, and was struck by how valuable all that aged lumber is in that place. There must be a couple of shiploads worth up that hill. Part of me can appreciate it for the story it tells.. The other part want's to get in there and start cleaning and fixing things lol.

I read on Wikipedia that Pyramiden was founded by Sweden in 1910, and here I am living in a Swedish wooden house built in 1907. I wonder what Pyramiden had looked like if it had stayed Swedish and not sold to the USSR in 1927? The silk show at the end is fantastic! In this abandoned Soviet mining town the red silks take on new meanings.

The beauty of a Canadian, Haitian, Norwegian, Russian people, Russian visit - all speaking English, extremely friendly people, being enjoyed by a few hundred thousand people (eventually, if viewing trends continue) is really rather beautiful! No vodka was involved in the writing of this, though homemade parsnip wine was - also extraordinary stuff
Parsnip wine? Intriguing, is it just fermented parsnips? I agree always inspiring to see people from such different backgrounds getting along. If we can do it, so can our leaders.
@@joecrafted I'd heard it was supposed to be about the best non-grape wine and found that extremely difficult to believe. I'm not really a homebrew fan but decided to test the stories I'd heard. Basically, roughly chop 2 or 3 kilos of parsnips, add a heap of sugar, boil for 10 to 15 mins. Remove all parsnips, let the water cool to room temp. Sprinkle wine yeast on top blah blah blah. Leave for at least a year, quaff. It really is by far the best homemade wine I have ever tasted. I may have added a bit much sugar because it was v alcoholic and still sweet - a bit like a Sauternes.
I never watch Uma films right away, I make sure I have food, no distractions, a beer and dim the lights and ABSOLUTELY ENJOY the movie!!! Gosh, this was a good one!

I thought this was one of the best videos you have ever made. The editing and choice of music are great. This is also such an unfamiliar area and so few people go there. As a result, it becomes even more influential. It is also a fact that such an abandoned area, with all the rubbish, has an attraction. On the other hand, we humans (at least some of us) do not want to treat the earth this way.

Unbelievably Fantastic! Agree, your editing, cinematography to me was like National Geographic. The colors of the waters, the mountain ranges, the painted and rusted steel and the buildings were gorgeous! I could see this in an oil painting. AND TO END THIS VIDEO with dropping red drapes, seeing the wind gently taking hold of their length and to see the strength and beauty of your aero-dynamic dance in that environment.... truly magnificent!

This step's subject, Pyramiden, and being on land, seem to have inspired you into making one of your best videos, technically-speaking. Do you remember the step when you showed how the two of you can make a hiking video which appears to have been made by a whole film crew? Was it in Canada? This one is even more complex! The shooting and the editing are incredible; way above a "normal" RUclips channel. It's a great example of why, in your survey, most patrons replied that they don't really need treats other than your videos. Bravo for the great work!

Having worked in many mines, including Coal Mines, I learned that equipment was rarely idle. What you did not see in your trek up those stairs were the Cars that ran on the Rail Tracks. The workers would Not have to climb those steps everyday. They would have rode to the top and down again, in the trams. Had you reached the top, you might have seen a huge Cable Winch, very common in mines. With several cars filled with ore, there would be at least one to carry workers, going up or down and cars filled with supplies, like timbers for the mine shafts.
One other little point. There would probably be a Drift, at ground level, where worker would enter and leave the mine. There is always more that one point of egress, in case of an accident. Those stairs were probably such a means of getting out of the mine from higher levels... I'll shut-up now...
A good point, too far to walk and then work with hand tools.
@@ianbardon8581 Had the kids timed their climb, it would have been lunch time before they reached the top... At that rate, not much coal would get mined... lol In the mines where I worked (Shifts), We left our tools for the next shift. However, it was a 20 minute walk into the mine, to the "Face", where the mining was being done... Then the ore was shuttled out of the mine, first by an underground earth mover, then by conveyor belt... Keep in mind that Russians and Norwegians are not stupid people and would have the best and most up-to-date mining equipment available, for the time... I'll shut-up again :-)

I'm in the energy business too, I used to work on drilling rigs for oil and natural gas. Most people don't have a clue about how that works either. I couldn't imaging working in a deep underground tunnel ! I get claustrophobic just thinking about it.
@@wh8085 I live in Alberta, Canada. I grew up on the Rigs and later I built them as a Welder and Steel Fitter. Both mining and the Rigs are hard and dangerous work, but I think the Rigs take the prize... Mind you, with everything automated today, they are a lot safer than when I was a Roughneck and Derrick. We didn't have "Power tongs". We spun chain to make connections... I'll shut-up now... :-)

Of all channels out there, you make me the most jealous of your adventures but also provide a perfect balance of what I enjoy and anticipate watching on RUclips, usually laying in bed early in the morning or late at nite when wifey is fast asleep! Fun thing, when I was in a university we had to make a game demo as a project over a semester. When someone from my group found this town on the map and read about its history, we decided to make the game a tactical game where you would bring in the squag of mercernaries to Pyramiden on order from a person who bought it up and set up a research facility there.
The backstory was, that the miners struck some weird substance with mutagenic properties while extracting coal, and that the city became a secret Soviet research facility, only to be scrapped due to immense danger that the substance posed and the fall of the Soviet Union. A former corrupt scientist bought the complex with terrorist money by promising them a bioweapon, but his project started to run late, prompting an assault from the groups that lend him the money. During this assualt the safety mechanisms in the facility got damaged, causing the mutagen outbreak.
Our mercernaries started the game by getting their helicopter shot down by unknown entity and having to regroup in the storm. After the team joined up, they started encountering the enemies, but to their surprise they weren't alive anymore.
Yes, we made a zombie themed tactical squad game set in Pyramiden. Or rather a demo. It wasn't very good, but we still managed to be rated as the best game that year.I guess the magic of the place helped.

OMG! I should not read through the comments before I comment. Everyone has described this step (episode) so well. I just love how you edit us through the story of Pyramiden. And then to end with that phenomenal Aerial Silk exercise and the way you edited it is just mind boggling to me, and I have done some editing.
The almost abrupt fade into the striking sound of the silks unraveling, made me wonder harder in anticipation of what you would offer next in the flow. So inspirational to think, move, and record that encapsulated response to Priamids standing remains. Thank you both.

Hi Guys, Thanks for another great video... about the mine carts, there are 2 tracks.
You attach your full mine cart to a cable that goes around a pully at the top of the system which then connects to the empty mine cart/s on the other track.... 1 track brings the full cart down, the other brings the empty's up. The empty carts coming up - help to slow the full carts coming down.

As a citizen of a communist (not by choice) country in Eastern Europe, I spent my young years in a very similar environment. Monuments of Lenin everywhere, propaganda inscriptions on every wall with the slogans of peace in the world ... The same interior design, furniture, (especially the upholstered armchairs!!!) in the canteen for employees / students. A gym, identical to the one I had at school. Sleepy atmosphere, nobody is in a hurry because there is nothing to rush to. For a moment I had the strange feeling that I even knew a waitress who served you drinks ...

Wow! You have to watch this video until the end. I was almost not going to watch this video at all, but I sure am glad I did. This was fantastic. I want to go to this place myself now. This was really well made too. Top notch film making, you would swear they had a film crew to make this video.
It’s dangerous and being too sore can get you killed. So as advice ride a slow reliable semi heavy motorcycle like a Honda shadow 600 or something (mines 25 years old and I don’t have a car) building body strength and resilience is my point.
If you really ride and adapt, you can survive sailing…So I have to do my part, then I’m outta here.
My biggest problem is misunderstanding the laws codes and regs. It’s a pain but maybe not so bad. I wish I could bring my bike with me. Aircraft carriers can carry aircraft so why not? Good luck to you tho 🍀.

At 18:53 that was a re-breather - the soviets were pretty big on re-breather technology (like an aqualung but produces almost no bubbles because the air is re-circulated adding a little oxygen and scrubbing the co2). You can still buy Russian made rebreathers that look like that - but you only use them if you are both *really* skilled and *really* suicidal. Fantastic video as usual.

That was one of the most captivating videos I've ever seen. What a delight to be able to explore places like this with you, because I know the chances of my being able to do so myself in person are tiny and diminishing as I age. Doing your silks at the end, in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, was a master stroke. The weirdest thing is, being in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm watching this during some of the shortest days of the year, while you filmed this presumably last summer, during the white nights. It almost makes me forget the dark days I am in the midst of right now in rainy November Victoria, BC.

My oldest daughter does silks, lyra and seer wheel as well as other circus arts... Those moments when you are able to perform silks in the craziest environments are just stunning. I work with recycled timber, and was struck by how valuable all that aged lumber is in that place. There must be a couple of shiploads worth up that hill. Part of me can appreciate it for the story it tells.. The other part want's to get in there and start cleaning and fixing things lol.

I read on Wikipedia that Pyramiden was founded by Sweden in 1910, and here I am living in a Swedish wooden house built in 1907. I wonder what Pyramiden had looked like if it had stayed Swedish and not sold to the USSR in 1927? The silk show at the end is fantastic! In this abandoned Soviet mining town the red silks take on new meanings.

I've long admired you guys, but this is another level! I'm quite emotional! The beauty of a Canadian, Haitian, Norwegian, Russian people, Russian visit - all speaking English, extremely friendly people, being enjoyed by a few hundred thousand people (eventually, if viewing trends continue) is really rather beautiful!

Parsnip wine? Intriguing, is it just fermented parsnips? I agree always inspiring to see people from such different backgrounds getting along. If we can do it, so can our leaders.
@@joecrafted I'd heard it was supposed to be about the best non-grape wine and found that extremely difficult to believe. I'm not really a homebrew fan but decided to test the stories I'd heard. Basically, roughly chop 2 or 3 kilos of parsnips, add a heap of sugar, boil for 10 to 15 mins. Remove all parsnips, let the water cool to room temp. Sprinkle wine yeast on top blah blah blah.
Leave for at least a year, quaff. It really is by far the best homemade wine I have ever tasted. I may have added a bit much sugar because it was v alcoholic and still sweet - a bit like a Sauternes.
I never watch Uma films right away, I make sure I have food, no distractions, a beer and dim the lights and ABSOLUTELY ENJOY the movie!!! Gosh, this was a good one!

It is also a fact that such an abandoned area, with all the rubbish, has an attraction. On the other hand, we humans (at least some of us) do not want to treat the earth this way.
