In this video my wife heads out on a road trip and I'm stuck with the maintenance on her car before she leaves. It's okay though, I love this stuff.
The first bit of maintenance is the oil change. After that I remove the throttle body and clean it inside and out. Then I service the transmission with a fluid and filter change and lastly, I change the 6 year old battery for a fresh one.
Hope you like it!

Push the ramps into the bottom of your front tires before driving forward. Also 4WD will help a lot.
That's what I was gonna say. Never had an issue doing that
I always put the ramps up against the tires and then drive up them. Never had issues that way.
I use old rubber floor mats under my ramps to keep them from scooting along the floor. Works great.
My advice for getting on ramps is to use right foot on the accelerator in conjunction with your left foot on the brake pedal with slight pressure on it as you go up the ramp. Once you clip the spot from the incline to the flat of the ramps their is no way you can react fast enough from your right foot only from the accelerator to the brake pedal. I have almost ran off the end of the ramp before I leaned that. I was hanging on the edge with the tire over. I needed someone to put a jack and lift the car before I could release the brake. That was 40 years ago and I have never done it again due to this method. Plus slamming on the brakes and dragging the ramps puts too much stress on the plastic ramps in a way they were not designed to hold weight or stress.
That's what I do.
Hi Jimmy
The rough idle could be down to the fuel used?
If you are using the fuel with a high ethanol content it could be a tribute to the rough idle especially if the engine is designed to run on unleaded fuel with no ethanol percentage.
Another factor could be the small bypass tube in the throat of the throttle body may be restricted, plus check the pcv unit and hoses a slight deterioration of the hoses could be a factor to the rough idle.
The last thing I can think of is the electronic map throttle setting is slightly off at idle setting and is being used in a constant setting instead of a variable throttle setting.
Besides cleaning the throttle body you need to either clean or replace the tps sensor, they both will cause rough idle.
I have a 2007 trailblazer with the same straight 6 4.2L engine. The rough idle is a common problem with these engines and the problem and fix is the VVT solenoid (Variable Valve Timing solenoid). The common symptoms of a bad one is a rough idle at stops and accelerations. If you don't keep your engine oil clean, there is a really fine filter screen on it, that clogs up and causes it not to work properly. You can take it out easily since there is only one 10mm bolt that holds it in place, right above the power steering pump, which you would have to loosen and move to be able to replace the VVT solenoid. I have had to replace this VVT solenoid a couple of times since I have owned my 2007 trailblazer, due to it malfunctioning and not working correctly even after cleaning it. I have always used the original GM manufactured part when replacing it as well, and it runs smoothly after replacing it. Try replacing this part to solve your rough idle problem.
next time, check the Idle Air conrol valve. when it comes to rough idle, thats usually the culprit.
I have a different vehicle, but rough idle turned out to be a vacuum issue. I had to replace a couple of vacuum lines and it fixed the issue.
Well done Jimmy! Your wife is sure to have a dependable vehicle on her trip now. Can't wait to see what's next.
On the battery connections I used some copper coat, it’s an electrical termination compound that prevents moisture and corrosion.
I had the exact same problem with my battery cable this year on my - get this - 1984 Chevy K10 Pickup! Thats how I knew you still had the factory wire. I replaced the whole cable. That corrosion creeps down the wire!
Good show Jimmy!
A large plastic kitty litter box works great for dropping the transmission pan if it doesn't have a drain plug. It's wider and longer than the pan and can catch all the fluid you drop.
XP3 is the BEST fuel injector cleaner. It also does other things. I've used it for years in my vehicles. Expensive but well worth it. It also will allow fuel to be stored for months!
Try replacing motor mounts
I told you last time
A lot of people don’t think about that but will cause a rough idle feeling
One thing you have to realize is that if you do not change your trans fluid no more than after five or ten years there's no point of doing it now because you are risking the chance of it slipping because the fluid is holding the meddle friction which mean when you changing it you losing more friction so that causes the trans to slip just to keep in mind
At 60 some thousand miles it’s perfectly ok to change it. Now for a trans that has 150k & tar black fluid then yea, don’t change it. His fluid looked fine.
Have you cleaned the air flow sensor?
Nice Doo Dude !!! Hope your wife trip goes smoothly.
I have had two sets of Rhino ramps for over 20 years. Yes you need to push the ramps into the tire before you drive up. And yes you do slide the ramp sometimes.
Another home run of a video! Farris is in great hands!
Let us know if the transmission starts to slip with new fluid and filter.
Why would it
@@MUSTANGGT12 Very common. Tranny varnish dissolves with the new fluid and clogs up the filter. He shouldn't have changed it before a long trip.
@@MUSTANGGT12because the transmission works off friction. New fluid = less friction.
@erico1120 not gonna happen at 50000 miles. Maybe 150000
@@MUSTANGGT12 true
That bar across the battery is a dual purpose bar one hold battery down main job is crush bar to help absorb force from accidents
The rough idle can be a vacuum leak or a fuel pressure issue. Since you have already addressed spark and air filter, etc.
Clean your mass air flow sensor.
Rough idle is probably dirty injectors. Try two tanks with B12 Chemtool. Good stuff
If that doesn't work, plugs and coils
i love the ramps i use them for my f150 i had the 6k and 12k ramps
Rough idle is probably due to 1.Dirty Fuel Pump Filter or 2.Dirty Injectors. Need to clean them out
Chevron with Techron my idle smoothed out drastic. I did all the thing you did.... Techron solved my sputter idle ...
Awesome
Great video man, I done it b4 on my TB what you've did, pretty easy, that rough idle could be your bad vvt solenoid, if your steering wheel shacks ,and vvt is the problem, some times you can clean them or put a new one in, nice envoy
Thanks! I’ve changed just about every sensor related to rough idle including the VVT solenoid. Also all the plugs and coils. I’m thinking I may have an injector acting up. No codes. It’s bugging me.
@@1RoadGarage try replace camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor
@@1RoadGarage if that doesn't work try some seafoam pour in your valve hose into your injectors, like bit..there's a video of it a kid doing it on a TB , it'll smoke...
Saludos, gracias por compartir. 👍👍
"customer states" hahahha.....love it!
FilterTek filter. Seems they changed their logo a few times.
Put a scan tool and do the idle relearn that way. Also spray down the maf sensor
I used a tarp around the area and after just cleaned all the transmission fluid off with brake clean
Happy wife happy life
Invest in some quickjacks, best damn thing i got for working on my cars. I have the truck adapters and extenders for picking up my gf's TL, civic, and my frontier
Lets see, wife taking car on trip, change tranny fluid... brave move, lets see how it turns out.
Sounds like an Evap leak
Trans fluid looked extremely clean and not old at all.
I use my 4WD when going up the ramps. And my worries car is front wheel drive. If the front tires are powered they pull the ramps as it go up preventing them from sliding forward. And check the VVT solenoid. Issues with that engine.
Interesting
Leave a loose bolt in the back trans pan and pull front down it will drain we’re u want it
Those motors always run rough it’s something to do with the cam sensors and the of 5th cylinder that I heard were hard to balance the crank cuz the of ball 5 cylinder
if the fluid is good, don't mess woth it....u have to replace the exact amout u took out .and not a drop more
Clean the MAP sensor
Did you try to check engine mounts? Maybe the engine is fine' or it may have something to do with map/maf or oxygen sensors.
I put a floor mat under each one of my ramps keeps them from sliding
Yes. Save your old car mats so you can use them as well.
Have u checked for vacuum leaks
Clean the idle air control valve
1K is nothing to get excited about. But maintenance IS still a good thing. I just got back from a 4,000 mile trip in my '03 f150 with 215K miles on it. It was fine.
It is if she has a mechanical issue and is stuck 1000 miles away from her mechanic.
Put an old rubber floor mat under the ramp and they won’t slip
His wife is going on a very long road trip without him, sounds like she is going that far away to see another person behind his back, cheating on him, and doing all to not get caught.
I would not trust her, to go on a long road trip alone.
Hope nothing like that happens, but this seems very suspicious.
Dude, get a fluid extractor and suck the trans fluid out of the dipstick tube. Makes dropping the pan a LOT cleaner/easier.
Attach those ramps with a tape to the ground. These fucked up ramps damaged my Royota Avalon rocker panelonce when the front wheel spinned to hard and pushed one ranp behind the wheel under the rocker panel. Luckily the rocker panel on Avalon was made of plastic and it did not bend to bad like it could be with metal.
It's a GM, ...there could be a thousand things causing the rough idle. Perhaps coils.
The rino ramps i had from years ago collapsed on a 4300 lb mercury parklane 67 model. I DONT trust them .i could say more but i wont..good luck
Didn’t change the oil filter?
Rough idle is probably due to direct injection carbon buildup in the intake.
this is not a direct injection engine
JUST A TIP FOR EVERYONE WATCHING. If you drop the tranny pan, Install a drain plug in it for the next time.
Those engines weren’t balanced very well to begin with not known to have a smooth idling engine..
have u checked the cats if there restrictive that can cause a ur issue
I guess I’ll have to check that. Thanks!
probably a clogged fuel injector
Man, I want to change all the injectors but that’s a decent job and cost and not even sure if it’s the problem. No codes. Could be I guess.
Drive up your ramps in 4 low. It requires minimal if any throttle input and they typically don't slide forward.
what an absolute stupid idea to not have a drain plug on the trans pan.
A little long on your oil change
5k miles is not that long.
Your shop is large enough. Get a lift. Or two.
who the hell trusts there wife going on a long trip like that alone. i would never allow my wife to do that and i know she would never allow me to do that either. you better keep an eye on her put hidden cameras in the car, dont be stupid. i have hidden cams in my car and me and my wife never go anywhere without eachother. trust no one.
