JD Powers? If you believe that marketing crap, I got a bridge or two to sell you. Look at the recent non-profit Consumer Report on most and least reliable brand. All the Japanese brands including Subaru and Nissan and even American brand like Buick were more reliable than Hyundai, Kia or Genesis. The latter of two which were in the bottom 10 least and worst reliability vehicle. Genesis was particularly bad as they were ranked 4th lowest. Let us not forget Hyundai is an automaker/chaebol who hides recalls and only after brave whistleblower both in the US and Korea came out and the South Korean police RAIDING their office and started investigation are they forced to do recall and they are still hiding some issues with the newly introduced Smartstream engine lineup. Thus, they won't get my business as they are the same corrupt chaebol but now they have "so much tech and features" to hide behind. No Dr. Alberto "Mr. BMW" Beerman or styling or advertising can fool anyone
to be fair, the best driving car we have in our family is the 2020 Hyundai Accent. Compared to the Corolla or Nissan Altima, it just drives way smoother and the power delivery with the diesel engine is just perfect.
I wish someone high up can see this video so they can attack even more coz I really like the N versions and the N- line cars so much. Here in South Africa the i20 is almost as popular as civics ,polos and Corolla's.
I am a Honda owning, previous Hyundai owning, but still current Hyundai fan. I'm involved in this world to a degree and do not see any evidence of this claim at all. If anything, I see a new, potent entry to the affordable import market. I currently drive an FK8 and in the groups I associate with, there are all sorts of Hondas, and a growing number of Veloster N's. This isn't adding drama, but is a welcome addition to the family.
Excellent video! It would've been interesting to mention the Genesis brand in how it has moved up in the ranks relative to its Japanese, and even German rivals, but considering the vid's direction, it makes sense for not including it. The focus is affordable sporty cars after all, and you did great in showing Hyundai being a viable alternative in its segment. Even in the face of electrification.
I know that Honda is the focus of this video, but Hyundai was so difficult to ignore, I just embrace them like my favourite toy cars, their progress is amazing and noticeable, I love every single N models from them, even their N Line models I also accepts them without demerits thinking!
This is a new automotive rivalry involving nationalities. In this case it’s South Korea vs Japan, reminds of the automotive rivalry between UK and Germany. Or Italy vs France.
I respect the way this dude goes out of his way to say all the names right. Good on him. After seeing Hyundai rise from their humble beginnings to the high form they have reached today, I think they could totally make their own 'Type-R'
Let's not forget Toyota giving the reins to Gazoo Racing for their sports cars. GR has been dominating in series like like WEC and WRC. Winning Le Mans the last 4 years in a row. They've rolled out GR Supra, Yaris, 86, and soon to be Corolla.
I just got the new Honda si and omg it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. HOnda knocked it out of the park. I’ve tried most of the competition including a few listed in the video and none of transmissions compared. The Honda was quiet when I wanted it to and loud when hitting the revs. The Hondas are now just so good it blows my mind. And I’m privileged to be riding in one
Honda is going through the same thing Toyota did twenty years ago. Toyota got pulled out of it by Akio Toyoda, their petrolhead company president. Let's hope something similar happens with Honda.
I totally agree with this video. I grew up in the 90's and I saw the golden age of JDM cars unfold. I was a honda guy and still have my 97 prelude. But today I won't even look at a FK8 type R.
This is totally off. The reason that Korean cars are popular is not racing. Racing is niche and more expensive. The real reason is price. Compare a base elentra to a base civic in price and warranty. That's why.
Nah but Honda reliability is still untouchable. Hyundai did get better but they're still nowhere near Honda/Toyota in that regard. Honda only started making boring cars because that's what the market wanted especially due to rising gas prices. But even their boring cars have the distinction of being highly customizable. You can turn virtually any Honda into a 300hp+ car. They're very easy to customize and the engines can handle it. Not many other engines can handle extra horsepower on top of stock horsepower.
Good for Hyundai. I’m glad they’ve created the N. As a car enthusiast and outdoorsman living in the Northeast, all I wanted was Subie to make another turbo awd hatch with a manual. They did not so I went with a FiST. 4 yrs in and It’s been all smiles.
The CRX si was the shiznit. That be the ride that I landed my beautiful wife in '99. So yeah, the CRX already had a special place in my heart before '99. After, well... It helped to make my life so much happier.
They seem to be under the radar. They stole the WRC crown from Toyota, TWICE. I’m surprised they didn’t make an AWD Turbo i20 to compete with the GR Yaris, considering the i20 WRC beat the Yaris WRC, that would’ve been a huge marketing win for them, and we get another Turbo AWD Hot Hatch to play with.
Love your channel. I have a part Channel coming out my own. Had to mention that you left out the upgraded Hyundai GT V6 Tiburon / Tuscani. The original tiburon's were all four cylinders. But the upgrade from 2003 to 2009 had a 6-speed manual with a V6 engine making about 180 horsepower from the factory. That was the spiritual predecessor of the Genesis and the Veloster
@footballcoreano unreliable??? You sure were talking about the same car? My uncle had one with three hundred and fifty thousand on it original motor and tranny. And still got 45 or some crazy mpg
Haven't seen any articles on it in English, but I saw some Koreans talking about how Albert Biermann and Peter Schreyer recently went under incentivized retirement. Apparently they want to have younger executives steering the company in the face of electrification. I hope they keep churning out home runs though!

No offense but I agree with the multiple people in the comment section that say I have never seen a Kia or a Hyundai that has lasted more than 200k miles or even 150k, while there has been many Toyotas, Hondas and even older Nissans that have gone over 1,000,000 miles with original engines and trannys, its insane. Not even European cars have gotten to that point much less Korean cars, while im impressed with the performance and tech they have used on their cars, I highly doubt they will start dying when they reach 150k miles.
The sad truth is Honda has slowly been dying ever since Soichiro passed. Everything he believed in has been ditched and solely focused on maximizing profit, even taking associate benefits away to do so killing their incentives to do their jobs with pride and passion.
lmfao No Hyundai is still crap, engine failures and fuel fires that burn entire cars down Apples to apples you can see the quality difference in person and at 300k miles
Hyunda and Kia need to make more FR coupes. Coupes are a dying breed these days and they may rekindle back the car scene like it used to, especially tuner scene.
03 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS owner here. This brand is a close kept secret in the car industry imo. I chose to stay with the 03 because anything 07 or newer loses give or take half the towing. Everything is easy to work on, and is built well. The front wheel drive is amazing, even with bigger obstacles, as it is VERY easy to pull alot of power from the engine. The WORST thing that can happen to this engine, is the valve cover gasket leaks and gets the alternator dirty. Hell the worst the company has done in the last 10 years is a recall with the ioniq because LG fucked up. I am under the hoods often and have come to understand alot of the models in the last few years. -a mechanic
I agree with you 100%, but the problem with these cars getting to the hands of the people is that dealers want to get an unfair advantage of the entusiasm of regular people with these unjstifiable mark ups. Did collision repairs on Hyundai for 10 years. Saw the evolution to the point where there is a five-star rating for crash impact frontal. And Hyundai exceeded that five star if there was a six star it would be given to them. Better crash ratings than the top so-called foreign brands of other countries.
Just because you live in the US doesn't mean other countries didnt get honda sports cars, I'm in Australia and we got the dc2, dc5, ep3, fn2, fk8. Plenty of fun cars.
I’m coming up on being a Honda lease owner for 5 years now. And all I can say is that they really have gotten more and more boring. It’s harder and harder to get a turbocharged manual (which was their main selling point of the civic sports only 2 years ago). I’m very disappointed by the lack of emotion and character most companies are moving towards and I am even more disappointed that Honda has joined that grouping. Great video!!

Excellent video! It would've been interesting to mention the Genesis brand in how it has moved up in the ranks relative to its Japanese, and even German rivals, but considering the vid's direction, it makes sense for not including it.
