They are spies of feudal Japan, far from the image of what Hollywood portrays them to be. The people here aren't necessarily Ninjas, they could simply be Samurais on a stealth assassination mission. There is nothing in Bushido that disparages Samurais from committing such actions, as long as it's in the service of their Lord it's still considered honorable.
Toranaga (in this series, I have not yet read the book) but after Mariko’s death, I now realize he is a master manipulator. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy or WANT to lose people but if it furthers his goals - so be it. To me, he touts not wanting to be Shogun but very much does.

@@rooksed ? she was martyred and it was even talked about before in the same ep they cannot let her die or kill her because every high ranking family will revolt. Ishido knew that everyone would turn against him if he let Mariko die
This is one of the best parts of the book, Blackthorne casually blasting ninjas. The cool thing is using a firearm in place of swords would usually seem dishonorable to samurai, but since ninja are considered dishonorable backstabbing sneaks I doubt anybody cares that he's popping off headshots.
This show would have been better if they let her survive. The tense romance that existed between Mariko and Blackthorn was a major pillar that was sustaining the show. The way the show ended left us with a big feeling of loss at the end, and that feeling completely overshadowed the last episode. Had they ended the season with her somehow having come out of it alive, it would have left the viewers much happier and eager for any potential sequels.
I recently finished the show and I 10000% agree with this sentiment. But I the same time, I don't see how they could have kept her alive while still moving the plot in this direction. Sad.
Having Shinobi pull up was honestly so cool, I wasn't expecting that. I knew Mariko died in the book but I didn't know how (plus the show changed some other characters' deaths) so I thought they were changing the show after the fake out seppuku scene
I read somewhere, that in one ofthe interviews, they have metioned that they'll be following the book only to a certain time and then they will go with the original history of Japan and the lord that Toranaga is based upon. I assume there will be a lot of differences. I have personally not read the book, but it's next on the list.
In the book she actually survives but Blackthorne didn't know she survived. So Blackthorne commits sudoku. But then Mariko wakes up, but her entire body was badly burnt. She was permanently encased in samurai armor when Toranaga conquers Osaka. When she asked Lord Toranaga what happened to Blackthorne, Toronaga says that, "Blackthorne thought you were dead. In his anger, he commited suduko". And then Mariko was like "NOOOOO!!!" then kills Buntaro by choking him. Then she looks at Lord Toronaga and starts laughing. Toronaga also laughs(the book doesn't explain why). Then the book describes Toronaga and "Lord" Mariko looking at a HUGE castle being built in Osaka where the rooftop has like a really HUGE cannon.
Was really shocked when I read that Blackthorne had committed sudoku, as it was previously implied that he was more into crossword puzzles. But yeah, totally blew my mind when they unveiled the Osaka _Shi no Hoshi_ (Star of Death)
This isn't the first time someone's sent Shinobi to kill him in his sleep. I suspect the fact that he chooses to sleep with a loaded gun and everything he needs to reload it multiple times may be related to that fact.
She died by fire when she triwd to die by ice in the flashback Damn she really did die like she did in the book. And damn i knew a guy named 'Yabu' would betray them but after Yabushige was being hyped as such a bro past few episodes i thought that role would be taken by Omi. noice

What's a Shinobi then? A class of ninjas?
@@MithunOnTheNet Shinobi is the original name used in feudal Japan to what we call these days as Ninja. Ninja is a modern term for Shinobi, feudal Japan didn't use the word Ninja.
I love reading and watching "Shōgun" so much. But this - this deserves an Oscar
Toranaga (in this series, I have not yet read the book) but after Mariko’s death, I now realize he is a master manipulator. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy or WANT to lose people but if it furthers his goals - so be it. To me, he touts not wanting to be Shogun but very much does.
He will become Shogun by removing the Taikos Heir as well, and then retire to become Taiko himself.
@@benragnarsson7228is that from the book?
@@PrtyBlaque318 that is from history
It's just like the Book..Lady Mariko sacrifices herself in the explosion..
I did not read the book but was her death similar to what they showed here or was it different?
@@ksbfun it was exactly that albeit Yabu wasn't there iirc
There are some scenes I wish they had adapted but this one was pretty faithful
not “exactly” like the book or the 1980 original as she doesn’t actually stand directly in front of the door in either of those two as in the book/original she stands close to the door but for some reason they made her stand directly in front in the version.
@@michaelsoland3293 Everything in the scene is somewhat correct i like you can’t remember if Yabu is there or not but they changed it from Mariko being close to the door to actually standing in front of the door.
@@SukiSZN Book has her with back to the door.
Yabushige had some Shinto Survival skills he was instantly able to adapt to any situation til his head came off
it was sad!! how mariko was looking at the anjin and accepted her death 🥺 so sad man!! 😭😭
Seeing her blown away last night made me cry 😭
Imo this version is better than the book's version (in the book she calls herself Toda Mariko instead of Akechi Mariko)
Seeing the scene, I’m reliving the shock and sadness seeing Mariko die 44 years ago which was traumatic for a 10 year old.

Damn snuggled up with bae and getting awakened by the Shinobi after a somewhat magical evening has to be jarring to say the least.😣No morning after breakfast coupled with flirty subtle glances - just emptiness, grief, pain, and likely rage.😢
Yeah it was a lot of relief after the permit came. him and her got close again just for the assassins to come and try to kidnap her. I never read the book so this caught be off guard. When I thought she was going to die she didn’t but soon as the guard is down she dies.
It's even more of a heartaches when the book short of implies that Toranaga considered ordering her husband to divorce her (if she ever survive Osaka) so he can marry her to Blackthorn.
@@masktuxedo77 super sad. I know John felt extremely relieved after the permit came. They even spent the tonight together. I wonder how John is going to take it. He the only one who truly loved her.

This show is just immensely powerful. I couldn't believe she sacrificed herself. Didn't see the original or read the book. What an incredible sequence of events in this scene. Sad that John loves her and she's dead.
Sacrificed herself? Her death means nothing 😂
@@tarmynastyr Exactly
@@rooksed While I don't agree with japanese mentality, her death literally was the key for Toronaga to win against Ishido. Maybe watch the show?
@@rooksed ? she was martyred and it was even talked about before in the same ep they cannot let her die or kill her because every high ranking family will revolt. Ishido knew that everyone would turn against him if he let Mariko die
Idk why i love it so much when he fires the flintlock pistols
This is one of the best parts of the book, Blackthorne casually blasting ninjas. The cool thing is using a firearm in place of swords would usually seem dishonorable to samurai, but since ninja are considered dishonorable backstabbing sneaks I doubt anybody cares that he's popping off headshots.
Not quite true, the samurai adopted firearms quickly and without stigma.
Why are you lying? The reason why Nobunaga rose to power so quickly was that he adopted firearms the fastest
Is it true? Because everyone says that in the book she died right after this explosion so 🤔 Don't toy with our emotions like that 😭🥲
Was really shocked when I read that Blackthorne had committed sudoku, as it was previously implied that he was more into crossword puzzles. But yeah, totally blew my mind when they unveiled the Osaka _Shi no Hoshi_ (Star of Death)

1:49 the way John asked "who are there?" sounded so casual that it was like just another day type shit

This isn't the first time someone's sent Shinobi to kill him in his sleep. I suspect the fact that he chooses to sleep with a loaded gun and everything he needs to reload it multiple times may be related to that fact.
Wow, the responses to this comment are so silly.

The original series had a good love story between them. This version sucks in that department.
@misterRDF Yeah the romance between them is heavily emphasized in the book as far as I've reached to book 4, yet the show completely watered-down this aspect of their relationship, except for just two "segs" scenes and a kiss
