We posted this video because Harry Connick, Jr. has the same ideal as us in wanting to "smarten up" the performance of popular American music. Glad most of you agree!
He's the only credible judge that any of these "music" shows has ever had. TV should enrich culture. But these singing shows take one of the most difficult disciplines out there and says, "you don't have to know anything about it, to do it." It's embarrassing, and insulting to the musicians who struggle to find work in America, or leave the country to find work. It's like saying, "you don't have to go to law school, to be a lawyer....you can just come off the street and do it." For musicians, this show is incredibly stupid and frustrating. I think that the majority of the population represents J.Lo's attitude. You know nothing about music, but can't accept the fact that you know nothing about it. :) Harry is way more tactful than I would be....almost all of these contestants shouldn't be anywhere near a stage....and these "judges" know next to nothing, and have no business judging singers. I could literally record myself and just play it back for every contestant: "it sounds terrible. go to school, study voice, learn your theory, take lessons, learn how to practice, PRACTICE, then come back in about 10 years. :) People need to stop calling this industry "music." It's NOT music. It's entertainment.
Thank you, Harry, for knowing that there's more to being a good musician/vocalist than just tricks and frivolous ornamentation and not being afraid to get in people's faces about it. Your depth is like an olympic swimming pool to J.Lo's kiddie pool.
Ornamentation is NOT frivolous in classical music theory. There has been volumes written about it's importance. Trills, turns, suspensions, appoggiatura's , are among the techniques that encompasses ornamentation knowledge in music. And like other elements in music, they can be overused and misused, but it is NOT frivolous.

NickBlevinsGuitar His explanation was actually perfect and 100% correct. He said there are 12 chromatic notes, and that the pentatonic scale is FIVE of those twelve notes. And that they are the five most consonant and melodious notes from the chromatic scale. 99% of the vocal runs you hear from Christina Aguilera to Aretha Franklin are based on that scale.

Thank you for sharing this video. I only hope its gets more likes and shares. As a professional musician with degrees in vocal performance, I haven't been able to watch this show since the third season or so, because of the lack of education the "judges" have. Harry is an excellent addition to the panel, because he brings an informed and accurate judgement of what is going on with these so called "singers". Hopefully we won't hear "you were 'pitchy' dog", ever again. These judges shape the American public's idea of what singing "should" be, especially for the very young musicians out there. They need this type of commentary, so they will experience real musical terminology and criticism. Thank you so very much!
Finally someone who knows music theory on a vocal talent show. This is why educated singers and musicians outlast those just "born with the 'X-factor'" Not to say the latter aren't talented... but they lack sustainability because they just don't understand that music is a written language, not just something you hear and mimic.
This is what happens when you have a real musician doing a real musician's job as opposed to judges who have no reason to be judges because they do not know the craft!
Yeah, what the hell did they hire a musician for. And unfortunately Connick didn't teach anybody anything because they just don't care. They can't get past the image.
His comments are the only ones that encourage improvement. Anyone who's ever been through competitive music circuits has heard critiques like these from judges and although it sucks to hear, it lets musicians know what to improve upon.
The pentatonic is literally the first thing musicians learn about when studying theory (or even just an instrument)… and here we have a “world class” pop singer who has been deemed fit to judge other people, not having a single clue as to what it is. This frustrates me
This. I started learning to play piano a year ago and I learned about the pentatonic scale in the first week. Fucking hell the standards have never been lower smh
What Harry is saying is: Don't try to be flashy without learning the basics. Sing the song as it was written and don't try to over do the delivery. What is the song about and what emotions is it trying to convey instead of look how great I am.
Though I don't mind JLo or Keith at all, I love that Harry is a judge on here!! It's about time they brought in someone who actually has a clue about what music really is!! Pitchy --- not a word, it just means you can't sing in tune! haha.. Want to see a show with judges worthy of being on a singing show? Check out "The Sing-Off" Judges all have backgrounds in music, ie. can read sheet music, understand what they're talking about, know basic terminology like dynamics, dissonance, meter, timbre.. etc...
Ya'll make these WEAK singers who couldn't CREATE a song for the life of them by buying and listening to them. They couldn't play an instrument or do the the audio engineering well another in a LIFETIME, which is where the magic happens. Producers can make ANYONE sound good with the right "plugins" which most people don't have any ideas what I'm talking about. They do know autotune but there's sooooooooo much more effect a vocal take ie compression, eq, saturation, exciters, etc. So ANYONE with the right look can be made to sound good. Though I want REAL music by someone who's DEDICATED to their craft
Funny, because Pentatonics are Scales Simplified. They're the most basic form of melodies. Granted, they're one of the most used forms. But, it's not like he was lecturing her on Diminished Scales, Polychords or Superlocrian.
@@mysa.relind977 I don’t think he was showing off. There’s an extent to which the runs are there to hide when a voice isn’t that special. And, if you’re going to hang your audition on runs, make them good ones. It’s not that pentatonic can’t be good - there’s a ton of pentatonic playing on the Allman Bros. Album Bothers and Sisters, particularly on Jessica - but it can be boring if you don’t really get what to do with it. And this singer didn’t.
As an educated musician, I LOVE having Harry on the panel because of the objectivity he brings with his critiques. Everything I've heard him say thus far is dead on. But I can't help feeling he'll always be fighting a losing battle because the VAST majority of people have no idea what he's talking about nor do they care. But that's like anything....it's no different from comparing a chef with sensitive tastebuds with that of a 10 year old child who basically eats anything.
It's great to have a knowlegable judge on the show. It's weird how defensive Lopez gets--she basically says "I'm ignorant and I want to stay that way!"
Harry speaks total sense and if they listen to him, these people may become much better singers. What's more, individual singers and not just another ' Licks' clone. Bless you Harry!!!
Being smart and right is offensive to people who are neither. Keith and Harry could both entertain a crowd with nothing but their instrument atbhand. Jlo needs an entourage, lighting and sound engineer to be entertaining. And between keith and harry, harry could keep the party going for days on end without ever repeating himself.

Obviously, many so-called "singers" don't have any basic training in music. Pentatonic scale is one of the most basic scale taught in elementary music theory classes. I taught myself different scales from the internet without taking any formal music classes. It doesn't take a genius to learn it. So, please do some learning before you become a "judge" for American Idol.
I haven't watched this show in many years. But with a real musician onboard willing to get the tiniest bit technical, there might be something worth watching this season. Whether music or food or anything else, there's inherent pleasure and substance in watching a master at his craft.
Harry is right. Harry is a class act and with talent to prove it. Knowledge of music is so helpful and natural talent should still pursue it. The quest for musical excellence is a lifelong process but, an understanding of music structure keeps things in focus and is a time saver. Check out Harry’s rendition of “ Winter Wonderland” and I love JLO too, she is one of my favorite actresses and Keith is an incredible musician. We have a limited palate, a 12 tone scale.
Stereotypical anti-intellectualism at work. "Knowing much" is the perceived negative, acting indifferent or dismissive towards knowledge is considered good/justified. Idiocracy in the making.
I am a below average guitar player, but anyone who suggests that they want to learn. I always suggest learning the pentatonic scales first. They open up the entire guitar for you to play with.

Haha and that is the difference between a skilled musician and a pop singer who never bothered to really learn about her craft.
She can't even sing! Or act! Dance...maybe yeah. All she is famous for is her ass. Personally, I don't think she's that pretty... InThe face... It's all just ass.
You are right. She was too busy selling albums and having massive success and making millions in the music business. What a fool she is.
@@JK-vc7ie lol what a pathetic idea of success you have
Pop music is a craft? Nice joke bro if i could make a statistical approaximation of beats which would make sense to the mind of an average person i would get pop.
@@sriyansh1729 Of course it's a craft. It's not a particularly inspiring one but it's not a cakewalk, it takes quite a bit of know-how on the musicians' end. Plenty of pop songs are and were quite good too, though there are many bland and uninspired ones.
Gotta love Harry!
Go Harry! Speak out against the dumbing down of the American musical ear!
Connick is a true musician. And that's why jazz musicians can play EVERYTHING pop musicians can, but pop musicians CAN'T play jazz.
Yer GAEDAEMN right. 😎
Connick seems a sincere person. Not bent to celebrating mediocrity without challenging to be better.
Nothing beats aggressive ignorance.
John, you have said it the best!
Of which Jennifer Lopez has an abundance of.
Man they seem to get more aggressive every year!
It's the American way.
They did that for the TV.
AI is still a tv SHOW.
That's their bit they were doing there..trying to emulate what Simon & Paula used to do on the show...
Just chill everyone..they were only tryinna make the show more engaging. 🤷♂️
I could listen to him talk nerdy all night long.
Connick knows what's up. A Real New Orleans Jazz musician!
+Jonathan Bengco To love the language (music), you got to be born on the banks of the Mississippi. Stayin by my mama's in slippers an pajamas where there's always something good to eat... Bettin strawberries, honey and cherries, and pecan pies oh so sweet! With a dew rag on my brow... Jasmine, wisteria and Fleur-de-lis... To love the language (music) you got to be born on the banks of the Mississippi!!!
*****=) I feel you brother... I wasn't born there, but I have family roots there and I think it really is something that gets in your soul. I can't explain it.
***** I kinda wondered if anyone would notice if my first comment was actually lyrics from one of Harry's songs, but I kind of doubt anyone will, which is sad, because SHE is my favorite album of all time. I LOVE that soo much.
***** I agree! He is an amazing artist... and an amazing man... After Katrina, didn't he start a musician's village or something like that? Brilliant. He is a really awesome guy... Love him!!! =) And it's really cool to talk to someone who appreciates him, by the way!!!
I was surprised that this show hired a musician, lol :)
She proves the difference between a real performer and a “product”.
This helps explain why Harry Connick Jr. is a musician's musician.
It explains why I want to hear him sing and not any of the others. Because he can sing. Just belting or guiding or riffing through a song is absolutely irritating and meaningless junk. It isn't singing a song.
This is why I love Harry Connick Jr. :D
Preach Harry! Here's a guy who knows his music theory and how to use it. You gotta know the rules before you can break the rules.
Harry is the man. It’s backed up with knowledge and experience!
"What's the thing you're talking about"
*Ignores him*
Harry is soooo right here. Amazing knowledge he has of all music.
Oh yes, BLESS this man!!! Love it. Real musical training.
I love you Harry!!!!
Finally someone who knows music theory on a vocal talent show. This is why educated singers and musicians outlast those just "born with the 'X-factor'" Not to say the latter aren't talented... but they lack sustainability because they just don't understand that music is a written language, not just something you hear and mimic.
Bringing intelligence to American Idol. Thank you, Harry.
This is what happens when you have a real musician doing a real musician's job as opposed to judges who have no reason to be judges because they do not know the craft!
Yeah, what the hell did they hire a musician for. And unfortunately Connick didn't teach anybody anything because they just don't care. They can't get past the image.
Keith Urban was one of the best studio musicians in LA, and is one of the best guitarist out there. JLO is a dif story.
Harry, I love you.
Put three Harry Connick Jr.s on the panel, and I might actually watch this "singing" contest.
Harry is the real deal. He has a beautiful voice♥️
...and THIS is why I enjoy Harry Connick, Jr. TEACH THE PEOPLE!!!!
I'm sooooooooo glad they finally have a musician as a judge, that has never happened on that show before.
His comments are the only ones that encourage improvement. Anyone who's ever been through competitive music circuits has heard critiques like these from judges and although it sucks to hear, it lets musicians know what to improve upon.
I love Harry Connick Jr. He's so ahead of it all.
I love Harry Connick Jr !!! More knowledge, please!!!
Has jlo ever put out a relevant album of true music or pure singing? No. She's a pop performer, not a musical artist.
Because fashion, dance moves and looks aren’t the only things in pop music. Thank you HC Jr! 😎
Harry Connick! Schooling the wannabe! It is about time someone is there to judge on musicality, not just wailing and good looks! About time!
damn that was legit hilarious. I never knew how much I liked Harry Connick Jr
Finally, somebody that really knows about music in this show. We need more people like Harry Connick Jr judging these kind of shows. Great
What Harry is saying is: Don't try to be flashy without learning the basics.
Check out "The Sing-Off" Judges all have backgrounds in music, ie. can read sheet music, understand what they're talking about, know basic terminology like dynamics, dissonance, meter, timbre.. etc...
so you can be a music star without knowing about pentatonic scales? why am I studying music?! LOL
Those "music stars" aren't actually musicians. Carry on with your studies.
JWcolour "Its the new generation wohooooo..of PAAaaaarty peopleeeee"
"Let.Me.Introduce.You.To.The.Party.People".
sure I'll carry on ;) I wanna know what I sing or play (or listen) eheh
Well do you wanna be a music star or do you wanna be a musician?
She is a hollow-head-starlet. My respect to Mr. Harry.
Thank you Harry for being a musician, versus being a popstar.
Funny, because Pentatonics are Scales Simplified. They're the most basic form of melodies. Granted, they're one of the most used forms. But, it's not like he was lecturing her on Diminished Scales, Polychords or Superlocrian.
Mutated Hexadic Scales of the Supra-Diatonic Scale? Should've gotten Yusef on that show while they still could!
good point Mike
He was flexing and showing off I hated that
@@mysa.relind977 I don’t think he was showing off.
This just proves what I have known since I was a child. Harry Connick Jr. is a musical genius.
It's great to have a knowlegable judge on the show. It's weird how defensive Lopez gets--she basically says "I'm ignorant and I want to stay that way!"
Glad to see that American Idol has ONE musician on its panel.
Way to go Harry! JLo and all these warbling wannabe's think that's how you're supposed to sing! Lol
Mr. Harry Connik Jr.
I completely agree! Everyone is so awed by a vocal run, when it really is a pain in the a** most times to listen to!
Harry speaks total sense and if they listen to him, these people may become much better singers. What's more, individual singers and not just another ' Licks' clone. Bless you Harry!!!
Haha 😂 He is right and that clip
of the girl singing at the end proves it.
Harry Connick, Jr. is great! A class act, for sure!
With you all the way Harry!
The way he was like "some people on this panel" THE SHAAADE THOOO
The difference between a musician and a dancer turned pop star.
This is awesome.
And that's what separates true musicians from these pop stars...
they make less $$$?
Pop tarts...
@@ArnaudFTW McDonalds makes more money than any other restaurant chain and it's not even close, does that mean you'd rather eat there than have a steak dinner?
@@1missing that was a solid burn
You don’t have to know shit like pentatonic to be a true musician.
Harry Connick Jr is a true and talented artist!!!
HC Jr is on such another level of musical knowledge the other two have no idea.
“You know too damn much for someone like me, who knows too damn little”
Jennifer doesn't seem to like listening to other people teaching her something especially if it is a subject that she knows nothing about. Jennifer also interrupts and she doesn't seem to have much patience, maybe this is why she has been married and divorced three times, lol.
Likewise there are a lot of rock band 'singers' who know plenty about music, but have never taken a singing lesson in their life and it shows.
I haven't watched this show in many years. But with a real musician onboard willing to get the tiniest bit technical, there might be something worth watching this season.
Whether music or food or anything else, there's inherent pleasure and substance in watching a master at his craft.
I'm so sick of riffs. That's not good singing. Everybody knows that. Connick is teaching BASICS.
A musician that knows music theory 👏🏼💜
Harry is right. Harry is a class act and with talent to prove it. Knowledge of music is so helpful and natural talent should still pursue it. The quest for musical excellence is a lifelong process but, an understanding of music structure keeps things in focus and is a time saver. Check out Harry’s rendition of “ Winter Wonderland” and I love JLO too, she is one of my favorite actresses and Keith is an incredible musician. We have a limited palate, a 12 tone scale.
THANK YOU HARRY!
Stereotypical anti-intellectualism at work. "Knowing much" is the perceived negative, acting indifferent or dismissive towards knowledge is considered good/justified.
Idiocracy in the making.
lol yes. vote Trump!
+Alexander Lee Why?
i'm joking. Trump kind of embodies anti-intellectualism in America today
Ah ok - the state of contemporary American politics makes it very hard to distinguish satire from sincere opinion.
Finally a musician who judges..
"You know too damn much".
No, he knows Week 1 music theory.
Connick is the only one who understands both music and voice very well on which he's actually deserving of being a judge.
i actually learned something, better keep this judge around
I am a below average guitar player, but anyone who suggests that they want to learn. I always suggest learning the pentatonic scales first. They open up the entire guitar for you to play with.
And this is why we need to fight to keep music ed. In school
jennifer is used to using "auto tune"
