Munster High School Choirs
Luke McGinnis, conductor
Text:
let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance
between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond
of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between
the shores of your souls.
(you shall be together even in the
silent memory of God)
On Marriage - Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931) (adapted by the composer)
Program Notes:
This text describes the characteristics of love between two people, specifically in the context of marriage. However, the universality of love is applicable in so many different facets of life, and these particular passages seem to really speak to the kind of love that bonds singers together. Despite the unity that our singing brings, there will always be space that exists between us for our sound to occupy, allowing the air we breathe to dance between us and create the glorious sounds that give us life. Love is never really a bond that is fixed in time, but rather something that ebbs and flows in the tides of life as time comes to pass, remaining abstract but perpetually within us.
spaces in your togetherness was commissioned by Munster High School Choirs in celebration of their 2023 Choir Tour to Austria.

Funded through the Munster Education Foundation in celebration of their 30th year (1992-2022)
The Munster High School Choral Department at Munster High School (IN) is comprised of four curricular choirs - Beginning Treble Chorus, Maverick Choir, Chamber Choir, and Chorale - and two extracurricular ensembles - SING (Tenor/Bass Voices) and SONG (Soprano/Alto Voices). These groups sing at five major concerts, multiple community performances throughout the year, sporting events, collaborations with professional and collegiate ensembles, and the MHS commencement each June. Programming includes an eclectic repertoire that spans from traditional to significant contemporary works, all in their original languages, and to selections that express multicultural perspectives.
The choirs have performed twice in Carnegie Hall, including once with world-renowned composer/conductor Eric Whitacre, Orlando, Florida (performing in the "Candlelight Processional" at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center), and Anaheim/Los Angeles, California (performing at Disneyland). The program made its international debut in the 2023 Salzburg Choral Festival under the direction of both Dr. Edith Copley and Professor János Czifra. The nationally renowned program is under the direction of Mr. Luke McGinnis.
