  • A perfect day to fly the backcountry of the Idaho panhandle. We departed Orofino for Moose Creek airstrip 1U1 with half full tanks in clear calm air with hoards of insects spattering the plane on take off. Lots of bug spots on the windshield in the video. Decided to fly up the Selway River and land on runway 04. All the short field practice with tight pattern work and side slipping and precision spot landing paid off as we made a sweet touchdown. Take off was a no brainer from runway 22 as there is quite a pronounced downhill slope for the first 500ft. We flew down the Selway River enjoying the practice following the bends of the river as we climbed out into clear air space. The landing abort point is crossing the river and making an easy 30 degree left turn to line up with runway 01 and climb out up the valley.

Not many people know this, but Moose Creek was named after a Moose. True story!

I love the timing of the stall horn. If you're going to stall, do it 2" above the ground! :-)

So, what animals or taxiing airplanes were coming down that cross runway since you did't do a crosswind or downwind pattern?

Just curious…have you ever flown into Moose Creek?
