Does Daytona Championship USA have crap graphics...?

  • The new Daytona Championship USA arcade game (which was recently accidentally - or just through sheer idiocy - released on to the internet by Sega themselves) seems to have come under a lot of fire for just not looking good enough for a 2017 arcade game. But does it really look THAT bad? Lets compare it to a racer from last gen and a brand new one from this generation to find out!

    A good perspective about the 2017 Daytona USA having unique style of graphics. Granted it's not focus on realism by any means. But I can say it's a step down. If you look at Daytona USA 2 that game had a realism and yet still arcadey, and still looks timeless.

    I have a bit of a CG background in something about Daytona Championship rubs me the wrong way. The cars in Daytona were usually stylized, but my suspicion is they bought the car model from an asset store. Sega racing games usually oozes with style and for me it's not counting the graphical effects, but the artistry and design. Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race still looks amazing today, I also think they are visually more appealing than Daytona Championship.
    However graphically and artistically I believe Outrun 2 (2003) beats this game blow by blow. Comparing it to "Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed" would be almost unfair, since that game is a masterpiece in my humble opinion, gameplay and graphically. Daytona Championship was outsourced to small Chinese dev team and it shows. (an assumption made by looking at the credits) Not saying they did a bad job...
    It's not a bad looking game, but not on Sega's standard. Would've been awesome if Sumo Digital made it, those guys are amazing.

      All excellent points there. I'm definitely with you on the whole Outrun 2 and Sonic Transformed looking better than this game as well. • @USSMariner
      @USSMariner 6 лет назад +5

      I concur with the aesthetics critique. The cars are almost certainly pulled from a store, as the Daytona cars have *always* been slightly stylized, even in 2 and 2001 when the processing restrictions meant that the geometry could be more complex.
      The level design just strikes me like a KO version of a Daytona game, I'm sorry. It's the kind of feeling when I play a random game using Unreal 3, so the graphical fidelity is fine, but it doesn't really feel like effort wast put into making those elements feel cohesive.
      For the record, graphical fidelity and aesthetics are *not the same* thing. It's why I kind of prefer System Shock 1's visuals over the second at times because I feel like the art direction is far fore effective at inducing fear and claustrophobia.

  • @vyperii

  • @teddysadcat
    @teddysadcat 6 лет назад +18

    It's "crap" because of clashing art style direction, one side wants the game to look realistic while one side wanted to keep the colorful cartoony style it's known for, it ended up looking.... eh unfitting at best.
    It's sorta like the case of Super Mario Odyssey, but that game is so cartoony the realistic lighting is easily overlooked. For a game like Daytona USA, it needs that bold, in-your-face look to "feel" like a Daytona USA game, and clearly DayChamps isn't flashy enough. For me, it look mundane and not that horrible, but losing the Daytona charm is why it's bugging us, the toon artstyle should be more extreme, this goes for Sonic Forces too.
    Speaking of Sonic games, newer titles have an awful habit of placing buildings and props too far away from the playable area, making the scenery feel too open, and in DayChamps this is very apparent in the Metro City track, just compare it to Daytona 2's Expert track where you basically race next to skyscrapers, making the scenery feel super condensed and gives off a greater sense of speed.
    That's pretty my two cents of the game, physics-wise it's the same, but without the gate shifter and different steering deadzones this just isn't the best Daytona experiences honestly, it's still good, and no wonder why it isn't worthy of the 3 in the title.

      I actually think Sonic is 'cartoony enough' in recent entries. However, in spite of that, I think the style in Colors/LostWorld/Forces is outright WRONG. Ever since 2010, Sonic's style has felt more like a cringy Looney Tunes bootleg, and less like, well, Sonic. Sonic Adventure may have been a departure from the feel of 1/CD/2/3, but Sega's DNA for the franchise was still well and alive with Adventure/Adventure2/Heroes. 06 and Unleashed had less of it, but some semblance of Sega/Sonic spirit was still there.
      I can still feel Daytona's core spirit in Daytona Championship USA. IMO, Sonic's core spirit was lost with the release of Colors in 2010, and has gotten worse and worse with each consecutive release.

    It looks better if you play with the debug menu settings. I increase the shadow resolution, add AA, turn the AF up to 16x, sometimes move the light source, and adjust all the saturation, color, and lighting to play in HDR. I wasn't sure how I felt about motion blur at first, but now I move the slider to the max. It greatly enhances the sensation of speed. I find the game looks pretty good the way I play it, though it doesn't come close to wowing me the way Daytona and Super GT did (and still do) in the arcades.

    Personally, I'd rather play Daytona. Sure it doesn't have realistic graphics of the other games being compared, but its so colorful and has catchy music. I think the visual fidelity is actually okay. The textures are high-res, the game operates at 720p (or 1080p, I can't remember), and the I can't make out any jagged polygon edges.
    Though the personality of the game is not as great as past Daytona games, I still feel the core spirit of Daytona USA is alive and well in Championship USA, and that's a lot more than I can say for other Sega franchises (Sonic, Sonic, Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, Sonic, Sonic, and Sonic)

    It's a detail but I know what's missing to me : The aggressive engine roaring and spaztic shaking of the tail of the car in Daytona USA 2 made the game very dynamic to look at at any moment. In Daytona Championship USA the car looks like it's sliding on the asphalt, with very little feel of grip onto it.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  4 года назад

      Yes, the missing car shaking effect really does take a lot of the dynamic feeling out of this compared to the older Daytonas. I've actually compared Championship to Daytona USA 2 in split-screen before: ruclips.net/video/xivfAzk_9ik/видео.html

    I already mentioned. on your FB page how I don't get why people are expecting Project Cars/Forza graphics...it's a re-master of the original and matches the looks of what Daytona USA was in 1994 but updated for 2017. I love how it looks and plays. Meets my expectations completely. If they were doing a new game, a Daytona USA 3 THEN maybe i could see that it should get an upgrade to look more realistic like Project Cars or Forza....but still, even then, if they went the realistic route, Daytona wouldn't be following its roots of the colorful, arcade cartoonish graphics...so its lose/lose lol. Sega's never going to make everyone happy but as long as they make some people happy, its a good thing. Watching DCUSA vs the sim racers...the sense of speed is crazy for Daytona!

    • @MrThunderwing

      That's part of the reason I've never 'got' sim racers. Where's the sense of fun when it feels like you're having to break to an almost complete stop at every sharp corner, Arcade racers have always been king when it comes to speed.

    We were never the audience for Daytona Championship USA. This title is aimed at families and young kids who visit bowling alleys / seaside arcades, and fancy a quick multiplayer session on a racing game. It is meant to compete with the vast array of redemption titles and other casual racing games (mainly by Raw Thrills) that most arcades have these days. Therefore more emphasis is placed on the racing cabinet itself (billboards, flashing lights, attract sequences) rather than in-game graphics.
    Sega Amusements are a seperate entity from Sega Japan, and make games designed for western arcades. They have a tight budget hence most of their games are redemption games or console-to-arcade conversions. For example, Ford Racing Full Blown (ie Ford Racing 3), Sega Rally 3 (ie Sega Rally Revo) GRID, Sonic All-Stars Racing and Showdown (ie Dirt Showdown). In my opinion, Sega Amusements were set up as a response to the success of Raw Thrills. Raw Thrills arcade games may be graphically average but they are hits with their target audience (see above) and consistently bring the money in for operators. Therefore there is little incentive to make a coin-op game that has equal / better graphics than a PS4/XB1 (or even a PS3/360 title for that matter) if the arcade audience keep voting with their money!

    I think Daytona USA 2 looks nicer. For Championship, it feels... unfinished, I don't know how to put it. Feels like the textures are too smooth, and the shadows are lacking. But you have to admit, the cars' decals are very snazzy and creative! :D

    This new Daytona USA is absolutely awesome looking, its a true testament at how realistic graphics don't necessarily have to be an absolute must to make a great racing game, and in this case rather stylized graphics where thankfully employed, while at the same time improving upon them in subtle ways (such as added lighting effects and more complex texture models) served this version of Daytona greatly, maintaing that charm and appeal that made the arcade original so perfect..,excellent job from the developers, others take note.

      Indeed, I was a late convert, but I do actually like the graphics in Championship now. My one minor gripe would be with the fact that you don't get the shaking effect that the cars used to have in the original Model 2 game. It really added to that feeling of controlling a barely tamable, high speed beast of a car.

    There are no arcades left in my area, so I haven't seen a modern arcade machine in years, but judging solely by this video, I like the graphics. Realism has a place in games, but so do bright, colorful graphics. I grew up playing videos games on the Atari 2600, Intellivision, C64, etc, so these kinds of graphics will always appeal to me.
    Besides, doesn't it seem strange to demand realistic graphics in a video game where practically every other element is cartoonish? You crash your car and either you're placed back on the track or in a more "realistic" game, you have to start the race over. Other cars crash and nothing really happens, they're just obstacles to avoid. You can race multiple races on multiple continents all in the span of a few minutes.
    If you want realism in a game, how about after you crash, you're not allowed to race again until you can buy another car? Or after a bad crash, the game shows paramedics pulling a charred body out of the wreckage? Or maybe the game will decide that you were injured in your crash and force you to go through a recovery & rehab period of anywhere from a month to a year or more before you can race again. And even if you don't crash, the game makes you wait out the travel and scheduling time between races.
    How about it, do you want a truly realistic racing game?

  • @Brownd55

    The only thing that truly bugs me is the automatic model design. The bodywork just looks odd to me given the type of races. Manual is faithful to the original Hornet which looks much more fitting.

    Whoever says this Daytona looks like crap is sniffing thinner. Sure, Grid 2, Project Cars and the like have more realistic graphics and they are sim racers. But clearly, Daytona has more vivid colors, the sense of speed is always there and more important: the fun is there The way I see it, this Daytona hasn't lost the charm of its predecessors. My only complain would be that the music is a little bit different, but hey! I can live with that. I'm not disappointed at all. If anything, I want to play it in my bedroom.

    All sega had to do was use Daytona 2 physics add tracks from the Dreamcast ports. Make another mix course but no. They said. That’s make a worse but better looking Daytona USA 1 game.
    Also. Most of the arcade machines can’t hold up like the original as far as long term

    I have to say, I was disappointed when it turned out 80% of this video was just side-by-side without any commentary. I was expecting a video that got into the nitty gritty when I clicked this, maybe a video where the host compares the pros and cons of the chosen art style, what they did right with it, what they did wrong, substance. I feel it's a disservice to have a topic this interesting and ripe for discussion just be left to the comment section. Not to mention it's an apples to oranges comparison in the first place, which should have been the main pillar of the whole video. Sim racing and arcade racing are fundamentally different and are designed with different intentions in mind, and their visual styles are crucial to those intentions. If you made a sim racer with arcade-style graphics it would be distracting and throw off the tone a sim typically goes for, while sim-graphics on an arcade racer would bore me straight away.

      Must. Try. Harder. OK, how about a video where I take a more in depth look at Daytona perhaps? Try this:
      ruclips.net/video/cqzn60DGhqI/видео.html
      Or what about an in depth discuss about which version of Outrun 2 is the best?

      @@MrThunderwing To be fair, you improved greatly with those two videos. And it makes sense seeing that both of those videos were made many months after this one. So I'm glad you eventually did take greater care in giving substance to your content. Doesn't change how I view this particular video, because it appears from the title and runtime that it would likely be more of a video essay than just a comparison but it's clear you got better with time.
      Edit: I don't think any misleading was intentional btw, but the start of the video having the commentary might have actually been the biggest reason I expected a different kind of video

      @@the54car Errr, well, I'd been making in-depth content for quite some time before this video, so it wasn't like I just suddenly 'improved' afterwsrds. This was _only_ ever intended as a side-by-side comparison, not an in-depth critique, and the decision to add a bit of voice over at the start was a bit of a last minute decision.

    well, there's no real question there, simplistic lightning and basic environnments lacking the arcade-ish "pep" you'd expect from an arcade racer, i mean , where's the giant aquarium? the roller coaster? the formation of jets over the car? some bio-dome?
    not only some tracks models look like they jumped out of a Dreamcast , but the game itself isn't spectacular either like Outrun2 successfully was ...

      All stuff the sadly to never materialise 90's Arcade Racer looked like it had in abundance, from the scant couple of RUclips videos that emerged from the guy who was originally working on it. There was even a level that looked a bit Virtua Racing-esque.

    • @nickiebanchou
      @nickiebanchou 6 лет назад

      yeah it's quite sad that game looks more and more like vaporware....
      i'm seriously thinking about actually modelizing some arcade tracks for other engines or mods one of these days, therefore thinking a lot about perspective, color charts, off-track activity, dramatic landscapes, impressive landmarks and this kind of "graphic optimism" we got from those 90's racers we crave today
      and the thing is, it makes me so much more prone to notice their absence in today's games, it feels even worse ! :p
      i wanna reach up a hill and go "oh wao", that's what an arcade racer should be about :D

    I think it looks great. Never had any issue with the graphics and don't understand why others were complaining about them. It's an arcade racing game and not a console simulator racing game. The graphics are supposed to look the way they do because they suit the type of game it is. And it looks great. Very clean textures and bright colours...

    what you should have really done is compared this to the graphics of daytona usa 2001 and you would notice the attention to detail that game has compared to this. it's still hard to believe that a game released 18 years prior still looks better than this

    I agree that realistic graphics like the sim racers would not fit well with the Daytona series, but I also think that the graphics in Championship USA don't do the series justice since it has always been ahead of its time in this department.
    Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed on PC looks better, even its Hornet 3D model is superior.
    Mario Kart 8 also uses a graphic style that would match perfectly with Daytona USA, and is far superior to USA championship in the visual department.

      I wouldn't say it's _100%_ soulless, they've at least kept it bright and colourful and _slightly_ cartoonish, but it does definitely feel a bit like Daytona designed by committee. They have a bit of an understanding of what a Daytona game should be doing, but only really as outside observers, compared to people who've passionately played the game for years.
