When I used to work for Toyota I did alot of their engine rebuilds. No matter how many I did it was always nerve wracking turning the key for the first time.
I'm about to tackle the same job on my 2005 Tacoma. I read the Pro-Demand information where it mentions removing the engine. I couldn't imagine why the job would require this until you mentioned the oil pan. I appreciate the time you spent recording and uploading this video. Nicely done. I am a Master ASE certified automotive instructor, so I can appreciate your effort. Thanks so much for sharing.
Yes I thank you very much sir! I have a 2004 4Runner and so saying I think I’m going to have to this . I have had a small miss when cold but warm it’s ok . I’ve got new water pump, thermostat, radiator (with aluminum end caps),and stainless steel headers and hardware . I kinda figured I would be doing this because it falls in to the bad years for head gaskets . It has 231,000 miles my dad bought it used around 3-4 years ago and past away 1year 3 months ago. So sadly enough I began this about six months after he was gone it’s been up hill both ways . I knew it would but that’s life and I given up with out a fight . I have had all the interior out accept the head liner all has been sound deadened shampooed seat covers off the the seats new padding new carpet 30% better than factory. I’d say he would be proud already it’s just that extra mile now I didn’t think I would have to do . I was just waiting and checking all along hoping some one has done it. Unfortunately not so thanks for your video once more lots of help from watching ! Stay safe and blessing to you and your family !
Really impressive! I did a similar job on a much simpler engine (GM Marine 4.3 V6), it had blown the HGs and the cyl heads had cracks due to an overheat. Since it is an OHV engine did not have to deal with the timing chain etc, took much less time. Replaced heads with re-man marine heads and Fel/Pro marine gaskets. What took the longest was cleaning up the block deck surfaces and making sure the cyl head bolt holes were nice and clean.
11:46 At first I was " Why not just pull off the exhaust manifolds?" Then I saw the rust!! lol Thanks for the tip on the front cover. I have a 4x4 tacoma with the heads off now that I didnt pull the oil pan due to this vid. Cheers.

Thnkyou for showing me how to do it. It didnt look too hard after all, i will be doing mine next Spring cause i see white sludges in the oil cap. I will either save at least 1500 or destroy it completely. Well it has already heading to distruction anyways!
The sludge doesn't mean your headgasket is for sure leaking. Some gunk is normal its just some moisture and oil mixed and evaporated to the highest point in your engine. You dont want to do this job unless you know for sure that its a blown headgasket.
@@ryansmith7974 sure my engine is running fine i notice that my wifes 2011 highlander has the same sludge so i am convince that the thing is built that way and is normal. I thought Toyota didnt "pre-pressurize" the fuel system until the CAS detects a full cycle for a safety mechanism to stop the fuel pump in the event of a crash. There are diag tools that will bypass the C/OPN relay which is supposed to control this to test and pressurize the pump. Did you have a list of things that were replaced in the process? Nice work and video btw. Would it be more sane to swap the motor out? I'm sure there are a lot of crossover years the same block can be used.

The local mechanics wouldn't touch the head gaskets on mine, and being a master mechanic myself, I don't have a shop anymore, I didn't want to do it in my driveway. So I ended up buying a used 2010 taco 4.0 engine with 77k on it for $2400
It ended up costing me $2700 and I still have a check engine light on! I took it back under warranty for an oil leak which they fixed but the engine code is a misfire! I told the mechanic that and well you know how it goes! I need to take it back, no loaner, and the time off to get it it done just adds up. 🤷🏽 it runs with the light. As soon as I get a chance I will look back into it! I have no advice on this one 😳
I have the same issue on my 06 Tacoma. Cylinder 4 misfire. Changed all spark plugs, ignition coil twice, “check engine” light keeps coming on. I’m guessing this is the issue. Damn.

I did a gasket test where the fluid changes color 3 x and nothing happened. I changed the thermostat, no change. Have run it without the thermostat no change. When I run it with a funnel filler on the radiator fluid goes into the funnel and returns as engine cools. when raving more fluid goes into the funnel. I'm assuming the water pump is working since the level of fluid rises when I hit the gas . I don't have a leak on the water pump. Could this be some sort of air pocket in the cooling causing this? Or a blown head gasket that I am not getting a positive on the test?

You should replace the timing chain and timing chain guide and cover also because there Guide starts Rubbing a hole a in the cover an start to leak after a while
Mechanics typically know which bolt went where depending on its threads, size, bolt lengths etc. If you are new put the bolts in a zip lock bag and write the part those bolts came off with. I first started doing big jobs I took alot of pictures after every part of the process. After a part was removed I take a picture. Now I developed a general reference in my head for the bolts and where they go. Cheers

I thought Toyota’s never had problems like this? All I ever hear is how reliable they are. Apparently not. They are good vehicles but people make it sound like they never have issues.
David Price unfortunately there is nothing perfect in this world but proof is in the pudding Toyota is one of the best vehicles on the road. If you don’t believe it go buy something else that’s your decision but you may live to regret it! Sad that you think 1 car that has to have a 23 hr job done sours the whole name!

what are the steps to give torque to the cylinder head?
good job, how much something like this will run $$$ ?
I don't know, I spin the wrenches. The writers deal with the money side.

Where are you guys located? I’m a 4th Gen owner who looking for a good mechanic.
What is your technique for organization of bolts and washers as you go?
Mechanics typically know which bolt went where depending on its threads, size, bolt lengths etc. If you are new put the bolts in a zip lock bag and write the part those bolts came off with. I first started doing big jobs I took alot of pictures after every part of the process. After a part was removed I take a picture. Now I developed a general reference in my head for the bolts and where they go. Cheers
That's impressive!
How much miles on that engine...also what causes headgaskets to blow

How many bearing camshaft have the block?
I thought Toyota’s never had problems like this? All I ever hear is how reliable they are. Apparently not. They are good vehicles but people make it sound like they never have issues.
David Price unfortunately there is nothing perfect in this world but proof is in the pudding Toyota is one of the best vehicles on the road. If you don’t believe it go buy something else that’s your decision but you may live to regret it! Sad that you think 1 car that has to have a 23 hr job done sours the whole name!
Job well done! You da man!
