Tamika and I shared the same space for years in university and I had no clue. We literally shared the same room at a point and NO CLUE . All I could see was a BRIGHT, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL person who was super jovial- loved to laugh, took nothing too serious, extremely talented and resourceful. Years later, I’ve seen her work, her advocacy and book , I’m watching this podcast and I see her as the same person- I’m just 10 times prouder. Nuff love Tami!
I think the MAIN lesson for me is that children are also experiencing life around them - they are full human beings with thoughts, feelings and agency and we must be careful about the environment we create around and for them.
Even some of the employers who advocate for mental health and pushes it publicly they really dont carry it forward for their staff because most of them dont have that empathy or heart only for the wider community
Thanks Terri-Karelle for this podcast. I really wished that there were more talks and campaigns of Mental Health Advocacy in Jamaica, the Western Hemisphere; the World.
This was a powerful reminder that you never know so you can’t assume that your kids are “ok”. That’s why investing in mental awareness is so important. Having access to resources can save lives. More light, conversations and sharing stories.
Truly! Her book is lovely and poetically documents all the emotions she went through. It was her poem that I heard while we were doing a reading at Bellevue, I knew she would be a great interviewee. What honesty ❤️
Yooooooooooow! She was sooooooooo candid! Like she knows exactly what to say to bring clarity to every question and concern without batting an eye! Wheew! I was hooked right through this! I learn a lot too and definitely was given language to express some things. Thank you Tami and thank you Terri for bulldozing this elephant in the room with such class and expertise! Appreciated! Love you Terri! Ps. Terri, da jacket dey, how can I get it? Smlz, I loooooooooooooooove it man cho!
As a nurse who use to work in Jamaica and did my training at BVH and have seen the changes over the years, this was amazing to hear seeing I haven’t worked in Jamaica for years but had to pass this on to my nursing school group to encourage each other. Thanks so much for your transparency and with God may you heal from all of this and keep sharing your story
Terri-Karelle, thank you for providing such a safe space and platform for your guests to share so openly and honestly; I know this has been beneficial to so many of us.
This was a POWERFUL and very necessary episode!! Tami carefully and boldly dispelled the myths surrounding mental health issues. Stigma makes no sense and mental health doesn’t discriminate. Seeing persons as individuals going through episodes means that mental health doesn’t define a person. This is crucial as we remove the stigmas and hopefully grow, shift and change our perceptions and beliefs about mental health towards empathy, compassion, kindness and discretion!
This is such a necessary conversation to be had. I do hope that people are able to get a better understanding of how important it is for us to take care of our health and also for us to take care of others Mental Health. I hope the corporate space is able to see this and Implement ways to accommodate someone who struggles with mental health the same way they would accommodate someone who struggles with a physical health issue. This is just a beautiful episode.
