I love these stories but hate them at the same time. They're so depressing. It's so much death. I can relate myself. I grew up in the suburbs. I'm all of 30 minutes from chicago & i know so many that got killed. Lost my father to gun violence. My little brother just got shot last year. Violence is so normal now & damn near nowhere is safe. I aboustely hate it.

But when I say that I get jumped in the comments! It starts at home. Yes, it takes a village but it starts at home. You can’t be your child’s friend or act like their “big sis” ( her words, not mine) and expect them to respect you and follow your rules in your home. Kids don’t have a healthy fear of their parents anymore. I’m 44, so we’re around the same age. I still get nervous when my mom calls me by my whole name because I know she’s not pleased with me lol. I’m not scared of her and never have been. But I always have had a fear of embarrassing her with my behavior and I was afraid to disappoint her. That’s a healthy fear when dealing with your parents. I’m from Chicago. But the difference is when my mom saw the area changing, she moved to Houston so she could give me a better life. She had about $500 and her suitcases to her name but she’s managed to retire from a great job, owns her home and cars outright and has always taken great care of me. She didn’t make any excuses and just made it happen for me and I’m forever grateful to her for that. Of course she missed her family but it was more important for me to have a great childhood than it was for her to be able to see her family all the time. If this woman would have just moved to northwest Indiana it would’ve been better! She could’ve kept her job in the city and just commuted to work. But a different environment and taking her kids away from the war zone known as Chiraq could have made a huge difference for them. A different environment is the easiest way to initiate change in children.
