The episode doesn’t do the book justice. I read the book in sixth grade (15 years ago) so I don’t remember any of it, but I know that the episode was way off. The kid who played Matt was good though.
The thing is, many people who watched this episode as kids, including you and me, didn't get the message like you did. Adults would get it, kids wouldn't. It would need much better context and remove the "creepiness" factor to it. As a life lesson, it makes sense. But the Haunted Mask did a better job than this imo.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they were making this one cuz...boy is it out there and ...oof. This one is So Bad It's Good, so funny for how stupid and weird it is. There's also the weird botched moral stuff. It's worse than something like My Hairest Adventure story-wise but more entertaining for being weird. Although honestly I get more enjoyment out of this than the book even if the book is better. But hey, both are still better than the Say Cheese and Die Again episode...yikes.

Fun Fact: this was the first “Goosebumps”, episode I saw, and I love both the book and episode.

For me I thought My Hairiest Adventure was harmless, and this episode was almost an insult to the actual show.

I thought the episode of Don't go to Sleep was very entertaining especially that kid actor that was Matt Hamsterdam his acting was amazing 😂😂😂
